I am Herald Ayisha k'Leshya. As to the debate of Tayledras or Shin'a'in... well up until the mage series I was strictly bondbirds but now that I entered Valdemar... two days in I get Chosen by this big white fuzzball who calls himself a Companion. So really I guess that I could say that I have the best of both worlds. Honestly though the Shin'a'in lifestye is far more suitable to me.. I grew up on a horse farm here in Colorado and while I have been fascinated in the bird and raptor side of things have never gotten a real chance to do anything about it. I already treat my horses like they are the Companions or even a famed warsteed and the difference that it makes in training is phenomenal! The color of Firesong's eyes just seems to be one of those topics that is overshadowed by the deeds that he did. Granted his appearance in the Owl series is too predictable... just to say that I expected it as soon as something was mentioned about a Adept teacher for Darian. I agree with all who want to see something about the times between Randale and the Arrows series. And for now I will let these comments be and let you all know that this is a wonderful thing! I prefer cherry dipped ducks to sheep really. Oh and to the person from Colorado.... I would be happy to explain why it is that Vanyel is not only an important figure in the history but why he is so admired by so many. I really wish Misty would write this story. i keep thinking I've already read it, so well was it woven into the stories actually told. If I had to pick one story I would most dearly love to read, this is the one. Arrows was my first Heraldic book (Oathbound was my first Misty, but they only meet Heralds briefly), and Talia is still dear to me. But this story appeals to me because I would love to see Solaris's story as well. There seems to be so much dramatic potential there. > Well, it IS going to be turned into a quartet, but not quite in the > way you're thinking. Probably not. But that never stopped me. :p Though I'm not wedded to red ink. I have green and orange and pink pens, and any of these will do. But yes, I have a need to fix those pesky mistakes. I do this with almost any written material (I've received some strange looks in meetings, let me tell you). But somehow it hurts even more to see these mistakes in Misty books. And it also seems that there are a /lot/ of them in Misty books. Makes me wish I could proofread them before they were printed. But just wanted to say that you're not alone, Lindsay. > Well, I don't correct them *in* the book, but I do have a growing file > of inconsistencies that makes me think that Madame Lackey needs to > > hire someone to check her books for such things before they are > published.> I've been tempted to write to her and say "look, I'll read this for you before you publish. Free. Just please let me fix it first." The marks I make in the book are mostly just on the typos. The inconsistencies I sometimes mark on the page, or sometimes inside the back cover. > I read Oathbound and Oathbreakers over the holidays and I absolutely > loved them. It was fun to be around magic in Velgarth. The only > Velgarth books that I have read are the Arrows series and magic plays > only a small role and a negative one in them. The Magic's series has lots of magic, too. Vanyel is, after all, a Herald-Mage. This series will help explain what's happened with magic in Valdemar. Correct me if I'm wrong, but both the Winds Trilogy and Storms trilogies include magic. In fact, most of the trilogies contain magic, yes? > Firesong also states in Wfate that he was > descended from Vanyel on both sides of his family. > Would that mean that Starfall was Vanyel's descendant > too, that there's Ashkevron blood in clans outside of > K'Treva. It was my understanding that Vanyel assisted various friends with impregnation, so I wouldn't be surprised. I'm currently living a vagabond life, since my college kicks us out of our rooms for the holidays, or I'd try to find the textevd. > Hmmmm. Maybe Misty has changed them completely for the OwlEtc books, > but in the other books, the Tayledras were neither free nor very > > open-minded or respectful. And based on Darkwind's life, I would say > they were not free, either. They seem to be even more bound by > custom, convention, and > law than the Shin'a'in. Well, I don't know if I'd say they were /more/ bound. It was always my impression that both clans were very isolationist. They had their individual tasks (as revealed in Storms), and their lives were structured around these. In re the Shin'a'in closemindedness, I'm thinking of ... oh, who was it? Moonsong? The Tayledras mage who tries to befriend Vanyel by telling the story of his youth -- he ran away from his family because his options were so limited. So I'd have to say they're both restrictive. As for individual freedom, the Shin'a'in culture does seem to have a bit less of an individual focus (the children, and the needs of the clan, come /first/), while the Tayledras have a bit more individual freedom. But I think even that freedom is illusory. The fact still remains that to be members of each society requires a strict adherence to some pretty strict rules. Okay, it looks like I'm caught up. There's just something about being completely surrounded by the forest. When I was a kid my dad made our backyard into this series of paths and clearing and the trees and bushes just grew up to shelter it. I kind of pictured the vales like that except much much better. I also kind of pictured them as very humid though and I dislike humidity. nowhere's perfect I guess! on newbie question that I don't think i've seen the answer to....buckets of water? > with a climbable tree (why can't GA have climbable trees? it's > impossible to climb a pine tree!). These people are basically trained to be hero's. And i've never thought that they were infallible or free of doubts. It's what made me like her books better than some others. I don't think infallibe is necessary for a hero, but i do always want them to be special. There has to be something about them, they have to be needed to solve the problem in some special way that any other person couldn't do. Maybe that's just my outlook. I think htat's why I had some problems with the Owl books, I never quite felt that (and I've forgotten his name in the past week, brain? anyone?) was really really special. It's also what made Vanyel so compelling as a hero. He was unique. > Personally i'd like to see a new series of books dealing with the > twins of either Seleney and Daran, or of the gryphons, she could combine > the two and make one heck of a series. just my opinion, anyway. > That would be really really cute. Now i"m getting excited about that and want to hear the stories right away. sigh...this is usually why I stop reading books for a while cuz then when I go back to the library there's all kinds of new things to read and I don't have to wait at all. Instant gratification is a bad if pleasant habit. Sorry for not including names above quoted text...too lazy when deleting other stuff. Sorry for length too...the dilema of replying to digest form and also of rambling. Don't worry if you just delete, I won't be offended. Blue eyes might be seen as > silver. Maybe working with > the nodes has the same effect. The companions use nodes all the time and their eyes are still as blue as ever. there was a scene in WFate where Darkwind observed that Firesong's outfit was even more flamboyant than the one he wore when arriving, and he ws wearing blue, silver and gold to match his skin, eyes and hair. so it can't be Van's genes. and as for old age, there are plently of old Tayledras in the books and their eyes are blue. Which might lead to a discussion as to how black haired, golden skinned people could have blue eyes.....ok, i won't. i'll heap praises on Owlflight and Owlflight for anyone who asks me...i love Keisha. Now if only ML would write a story with a bard as the main character..... What do you think Misty could do with Lavan Firestorm anyway? He must have lived in perpetual fear of losing control. Just call it another tragic story in the style of LHM. Kris said in Aflight that Lavan's time was about 200 yrs before Talia, right? my memory may be good(preens) but it's not infallible(sighs, remembering one particular history exam). Especially as I nearly fell asleep after reading Aflight. (prays that no one will throw anything at her, then quickly ducks. perhaps she should pray harder?) i seem to be babbling. if we urged misty to write just one, stand alone novel on stefen, hard enough, would she give in? on the other hand, i don't want to find that auburn hair has turned to bright red, or that his eyes have turned brown. His not knowing whether to be Stef or Lendel as a ghost is bad enough. Does anyone know what The otherworld is going to be about? mmmm, my life has gotten considerably more complicated since i started reading authors that are still alive. at least you don't have to worry that the dead ones are going to write more books and leave you to run scrambling to buy them. All Tortall fans, the reason the Lioness isn't my favourite is that the woman who rides like a man positively sucked. and i'll never forgice tamora for killing thom off just when we were starting to hear something about him. Whoa, I'll never get accused of writing one liners at this rate. Zhai'helleva Note; Tale'edras is the Shin'a'in version of Tayledras. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Any thoughts on this? Oh, and >anyone know approx. when the Oaths take place in refrence to Vanyel? Okay, >I hope this starts at least a little talking, Hello, I was on this list about 2 years ago and left after a few months due to email overload, and have now returned as my interest in Mercedes Lackey has renewed while I re-read her books. :) Magic follows different rules in Oaths than in Valdemar because the mages we always see in Valdemar are extremely powerful and can use the nodes and lines of magic. In Oaths, the various schools "store" magic for their Adepts to use. Even Keth could feel the nodes, but she couldn't access them because she hadn't been taught. I think that trait of accessing the nodes is taught through the Tayledras, the reason Savil and Vanyel and Elspeth learn with nodes. Do I make sense? Second answer: According to the timeline in Winds of Change (the book I happened to pick up), LHM occured 750-798 AF, Oaths occur about 1270 AF, approximately 500 years difference. Now for some thoughts of my own: As I re-read LHM, I begin to wonder whether Misty wrote LHM or Arrows first. I can easily check now that I have both my books with me. Anyway, I am amazed at the things I am catching this reading of LHM. For instance, I never liked that short story with Jonne and Vanyel in Sword of Ice, but Jonne is mentioned in Magic's Price, so at least now I know it's "legit." She also set up a lot of things for future books that I didn't realize the first time (probably because LHM was my first Valdemar books, BTS and Oaths were my first Velgarth books). OK, now I'm just babbling and don't have any direction.
