Well this is going to disappoint many but Baen is just doing its combine two or three books into one trick again. From what I understand The Otherworld is simply the three non-Tannim Serrated Edge books combined into one. I was so mad when I went to Baen's website and saw that it was nothing but a combined reprint. Its fine if you don't already have the other books but I do. I want new books!!!!! When is Tempus Fugit coming out??? or the new Eric/Beth/Kory book??? I know the books are in the works but its been several years since the last ones where released and I want to know what happened. Is it me or does Baen do that alot? First Bedlam's Bard which reissued the E/B/K books into one then the Tannims books and now the Serrated Edge. I know it probably gets Misty new fans but its incredibly frustrating for those who already have the books and crave new stories. Message-ID: <20000113024103.38105.qmail-+AT+-hotmail.com> Heyla Listsibs, Contrary to popular belief, I am alive. In November, three rotten things happened in my life. They do say that trouble comes in threes, anyhow. One of these was that due to some sort of screwy computer thing, I no longer received the list. This made me very unhappy. But I finally got it to return, and I am now happy. Shin'a'in or Tayledras? Tayledras, of course! Magic and forests and treehouses and birds . . . and silver hair, of course! And, of course, Firesong. The Singer of Fire returns in true form: any culture that could produce my dear Healing Adept is one in which I want to live. And I just fell in love with the description of k'Treva in MPawn. I think I just caught the tail end of this, but I love the idea of a story about the gryphlets and the twins. It'd be good to get back to central Valdemar and high politics after being out in the hinterlands (no offense to Darian). Just to repeat, I am very glad to be back. meringue sheep to all, Ambermoon Singer of Fire Royal Defender of the Brat ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 12 Jan 2000 21:41:21 EST From: TrinityWch-+AT+-aol.com To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Actually.... I know that in the last Gryphon book (sorry can't remember which color because it's been over a year and I've read a ton of books since then) they had a partnership between the progeny of two of the main characters in that series, and I found that book to be quite fascinating. What would be neat, but not likely to happen, is that the Gryphlets somehow become a new type of Herald (but that's blasphemous isn't it?) About the Gryphons from Iftel, I'm looking forward to future books regarding them. Maybe a new trilogy about thier particular experiece, mayhaps? There are so many directions that Misty can go in at this point because she has made so many possibilities. <> I've re-read the series recently in the last year, in a few months it might be time again for me to read from start to finish. Not in the order that they were written but chronologically. Since I just finished the Owl series, I really don't need to go back there at the moment, but I've already read Arrows and LHM at least 4 times and the Mage and Storm series twice. I won't tell you how many times I've read the Oath series. Recently there was an email mentioning the magic in and out of Valdemar and why is it so different. Well, that's rather easy. Besides the commonly known fact that there hasn't been any teaching in Valdemar since the time of Vanhel and the fact that outside Valdemar magic is rather common (with the exception of Karse where they either make priests or put to flame any that show signs of ability). Node energy is available to anyone that is Master to Adept level. They may have called into something else, but it was still there. The only magicians that stored magic were Journeyman level and lesser Masters. In Valdemar, anyone that showed any kind of ability had a tendency to "wander off" into other lands. I believe that is mentions in the Storm or Mage series. (Please forgive me, I am currently reading 6 different books of various origins). Someone else mentioned that they are tired of Misty not writing about the hardships of Heralds and made them seem so perfect. Puuulleaseee... I've seen several examples in the books of Heralds not only showing signs of making mistakes but also of personality defects that would make even their own Companions want to draw and quarter them. They just don't happen to be the main characters, though even they have had their own problems. Remember Elspeths pride and arrogance, not to mention that EGO she had until she was put back into her place. One of the things that I have ALWAYS valued in Misty's books is the fact that in each of her series, she doesn't harp on characters from earlier series. I have read here so many times recently about how people wish that there was more mention of Talia in the Mage or Storm Series or Kerowyn or anyone for that matter. What I love is the fact that Misty DOESN'T do this, that she lets to story belong to Elspeth in the Mage series and (EGADS) my mind went blank... the young men in the Storm Series. It's just so refreshing to know when I read a book that I won't have to read chapters about a character that already had 3 books written about them. About Vanhel and his offsprings. Vanhel was a very fertile young man, and he liked to do favors for his friends. His offsprings, one of which was actually twins, were adopted and given to many that would love them, including the heirarchy of Valdemar. By the by, I've noticed a decided lack of mention about the Bardic Voices series, Serrated Edges or Diana Tregarde series. I know if people are on this list, they have to have read them at least once. I'm looking forward to more. I absolutely ~adore~ horses so the Shin'a'in win some major bonus points there. On the other hand, I like the lifestyle of the Tayledras...I don't know if anyone feels the same but I feel like the Shin'a'in have a more structured lifestyle than the Tayledras. Since Andrea mentioned it...I just got started on the DT series...I love them. Okay, I started with Burning Water and then read Jinx High. I was quite surprised to find that I ~had~ read those two in order at least. Is there anything that came before BW? What comes after that? I read the Lark and the Wren...liked it better the second time I tried to read it than I did the first time. By the way, have there been any new Serrated Edge books since Chrome Circle? One more question, I promise. Could I get some feedback on the Black Swan? I only read a little bit of it but I didn't think it seemed very interesting? Does it get better later in the book? On the other hand David Eddings worked on the history of the Belgariad for a year before actually writing the books. ML could have done that too.But it says on the Highflight page that she actually did the daydream scene with van in AOQ because the editor wanted magic in the first chapter. I would definitely prefer to be Tayledras. I mean, living in a tent! no, i'm not quite that fond of the great outdoors. i don't think there's anything wrong wirh Baen for compiling Ml's old works. I'm going to have to say I don't think this is an accurate interpretation of the handling of magic in and out of Valdemar. I think the nodes are only open to very strong Adepts. My reason from this comes from this statement made by Moondance in MPawn p 279: "So; of outland Adepts we have known, only Wingsister Savil can link into the nodes as well as Tayledras; her Gift is very strong." I am also certain in Oaths, it explains that when Kethry reaches Adept, she's finally able to tap into the stored energy of her school. Before that she always had to deplete herself and had no where else to turn to replace that energy besides rest. I don't think the stored energy of the school was node energy, because every school had their own storage. I want to ask whoever wrote the original post (Liz I think), is the use of nodes what you are asking about having different rules or is it something else?
