On the other hand I"m not too sure about this. I know that a part of my opinion is based on the fact that I accidentally read LHM first but....I really liked it that way. Chronological order just made sense to me. I like to think that if the author goes back to write about the past then there's a reason for it and the background will be useful. Instead of explaining conflicts or questions it kind of prepares you to read the books set later in time. Sorry to all the those who seem to be having bad things happen. I hope that life turns around the sun starts shining, or at least if it's going to snow have it be the white fluffy kind rather than gray slush. If it makes anyone feel any better I have a sad story....the one leak in the plastic around my windows manages to direct the cold air right onto my mousepad. J." To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: introduction Message-ID: <4.2.0.58.20000114022649.00acba60-+AT+-mail.superior.net> Hi, my name is Jennifer. I've been reading Misty's books for about a year now (if you don't count The Ship Who Searched, which I read awhile ago- I'm an Anne McCaffrey fan too). So far, I've read 13 of the Velgarth novels- The Last Herald Mage, Vows and Honor, The Mage Wars, The Heralds of Valdemar, and By the Sword (in that order). I just finished By the Sword about a half hour ago and I'll be starting The Mage Winds soon. I have all of the Velgarth novels now except Owlknight, so I plan on reading the rest straight through. When I first started though, I only had Magic's Pawn and I thought I'd try it to see if I'd like her books. Well, it got me completely hooked, but it was hard to find her books used- my main source of getting books since I don't have much money. I did manage to find books used here and there, so that's the reason for the weird order in which I read the books. Christmas helped me finish off my Velgarth collection, so now I'm reading like a fiend. : ) I'll try to finish as soon as possible so I can take part in discussions and not have to skip posts about stuff I haven't read yet. Should I do a post about my favorite characters and books so far? Both of those particular trilogies I really liked, being a teenager at first reading. :-) --Rachel -----Original Message----- From: Laura Rossier To: rachelsch-+AT+-mindspring.com Date: Friday, January 14, 2000 12:49 AM Subject: where to start (which book to read first) >> From: =?iso-8859-1?q?Rainsong=20de=20Eilyr?= > >> The Arrows series was the first that Misty wrote, and, >> IMHO, the first ones you should read as you get to see >> how her ideas expand with the books. I started out with the Black Griffin and went from there. IMHO i think it is more fun to read the books in chronological order, it just made sense to me to do it that way. It is also neat to see how the lands and polotics change over the course of how ever many years that was. But, I really didn't get into Misty's books until the summer of 98, by then all her velgarth books were out in paperback, with the exception of possibly owlflight. So I just kinda of followed the time line in the books. Anyway, there is my two cents, I think I have babbled enough, and I will now return to my lurkdom. I'de better be careful or I might hurt myself! Anyway, I suppose I must have read the books in the most bizarre order. I read Winds of Fate first, then I really really needed more Elspeth and Darkwind (does anyone else get, like, cravings for characters? And get really excited and jump up and down when the show up when you don't expect it? Or am I alone) but the bookstore didn't have Winds of Change, so I caved and bought and read Winds of Fury, and then Winds of Change next. I learned my lesson about character withdrawl, and for a reason I am not sure of, bought the Arrows trilogy and read it next, maybe because I didn't want to get too far away from the time and characters I had read about, explains why i haven't touched the Gryphons books yet. Anyway, i really needed a Darkwind/FIRESONG/Elspeth fix, and read the Storms trilogy next, although not all the way. Christmas came (and with it the LHM trilogy) while I was halfway through Strom Breaking, and after all this talk about Vanyel in the books and on the list, I had to read them right away. Three days later I finished the last Storms book. Now where should I go from here? Hmmmm(suggestions?) In short (I know! too late!) I didn't find that reading the books completely out of order had any negative effects on my enjoying of them. For example, I knew what happened in Magic's Price, well, except the very very end, but that wasn't really all that important while reading it, these aren't mysteries or suspense thrillers where the plot is the only important part. PS my fingers are freezing, can someone point me to the warmest spot in the Hall please!!!!!!!!!! Snowball sheep for everyone whose car doors were frozen shut this morning too! Zhai'helluva! Where was it said they couldn't? It would be interesting to see how they would deal with the Companion. I'm also wondering will Elvenblood get a sequel and when? It just sort of ended. On page 144 (paperback version - I'm selfish enough to want a copy of Misty's books for my own and too cheap to buy hardback) of Magic's Pawn Vanyel comes back to the suite with his fingers bleeding and his hands cramped and bruised. 'Lendel gets an ointment and massaged it into his hand. When Van asked what it was because it made him smell like a pastry, 'Lendel said ".. It's cinnamon and marigold. Good for the cramped muscled and the poor, battered fingers." Well, I was wondering, does such an ointment actually exist or, better yet, can it be made with ingredients I could get my hands on? I'm really into herbs and flowers for healings and I'd really be interested in getting a potful of that stuff. If anyone can help me, please email me at ashke-+AT+-greenapple.com and thank you all for your time!
