Here's something that is light but could be a lot of fun. I was listening to Peter and the Wolf the other day and I got to thinking, What instrument would I pick to represent the characters in Misty's books? The farthest I got was an oboe for Kethry and maybe a cello for Tarma. I haven't started thinking about anyone else (what can I say, I just read the books). Anybody else want to join in? Feel free to disagree with my choices, it isn't like they're set in stone or anything. It's position in an orchestra is often understated, but it would be sorely missed. Tarma - trumpet, maybe one of the lower pitched ones...I'd go with a trombone, but that's a bit too masculine. It's a bit harsh, and is a great rallying instrument. It gets the listener's attention. Warrl - bassoon...the mellow low quality reminds me of a creature stalking all but unseen. Kerowyn - Also trumpet...maybe a piccolo trumpet to distinguish from Tarma. It cuts through the garbage and gets to the heart of things. Vanyel - French horn. Gorgeous instrument, but have you heard someone play a sad theme on a french horn? it will rip out your heart. Stephen - Guitar (acoustic, 12 string) complex and tells a story Elspeth - guitar (electric, with good effects)...lots of complexity in its sound(s) and likes to be in the spotlight. Sometimes obnoxious, sometimes the right touch. Selenay - oboe (one well played) mellow and reasonable. Daren - Bass Darkwind - Drum set...a compliment to Elspeth's elec. guitar. And the drums are a good driving force or a good solid backbone of a song. Dirk - piano - by itself, a piano's tones are kinda ugly, but absolutely invaluable and, when played right, can be heavenly (like dirk's eyes/smile) Kris - harpsichord...it's a beautiful instrument all around. And it's got a good dose of nobility sounded in it. Talia - flute, beautiful sweet tones...the flute can sing at you. Firesong - violin...a stunning complex instrument that is a visually appealing as its tones. Skif - percussion section - plucky and unpredictable Lisa ------------------------------ End of MERCEDES-LACKEY Digest 2192 **********************************
