I bought the hardcover book club version from a used bookstore in Tucson for somewhere between $4-$8 a couple years ago. So, for anybody looking for book club like versions of many-in-one books, try your local used bookstore. It may take some searching. If you happen to live near Tucson or Pheonix I recommend Bookman's. A great store! (Probably what I miss most not living there anymore.) Unfortunately, I don't have anything else to say. Well, someone asked about favorites awhile back. My favorite book by Misty is By the Sword. Kerowyn will always be my favorite Misty character. (I'm getting less and less impressed by her characters as time goes on.) Oh, here's another question: I have the opportunity to buy more books! So, I never got around to buying or reading Owlsight and thought I would get more of that trilogy. Is Owlknight only in hardcover still? I guess that I would still have to argue that Woman is portrayed as victim. Tarma and Kethry were the exception to the rule. The women they were rescuing weren't shaping their own fates, hence they were victims. You can't introduce an object (character?) like Need and not have that happen. The sword existed to rescue women. This automatically puts Woman in the role of victim. And the women portrayed in the stories were victims because they were women. The saving grace is that they didn't become prizes for the hereos, and not because that wasn't the inclination of T & K. A huge improvement on the tradition of the genre, but still a ways to go. Now I realize it's sort of a no-win situation for a writer. How do you realistically portray societies that have made victims of women and yet uphold the ideal of showing people how to think differently? I just think that Mercedes Lackey did a better job of it in Oathbreakers. Message-ID: <200001271732.MAA23997-+AT+-core.greenapple.com> Heyla, all! I thought I'd pop out of lurking for a moment. Scary thought! *grins* > Does anyone think that the Valdemar books would make a > great movie series? or tv show? I do... I wish there > was someone bold enough to put it on... Maybe I'm alone in this, but I feel that it would be a very bad idea to make a movie, or even a cartoon-movie (as compared to one with live actors) as was also suggested, from Misty's Velgarth books. How can you possibly show the magics that Vanyel, Kethry or any of the mages comanded on film? The Mindspeaking would be gone, probably turning it into all those movies in which the characters are animals and speak but their mouths don't move. Not only Mindspeaking, but Empathy and Healing and mental dialogs that the characters carry on with themselves. There is only so much that facial expressions and body language can do and if the characters (I'm thinking of Talia in particular here) are drawn because of emotional turmoil that Misty describes as thoughts in her books, how would that be portrayed on screen? Also, how would you portray the wonder and beauty of a Companion? Every time Misty describes a Companion for the first time that someone sees one she plainly says that no horse alive could compare in the least to a Companion. The Hawkbrothers with their BondBirds would be the same way. You just can't trust a real bird of prey the way her Hawkbrothers do theirs and it would come through in the movie. I know I wouldn't want a very large bird with a very large beak specifically intended for tearing meat and slicing bone sitting on my shoulder for as long as it would take to make a movie! Finally (aren't you all glad!), I'm sure that we've all got mental images of the main characters that couldn't be fit by an actor or a drawing, no matter how talented. No, I think that it's best to let the only movies of Misty's works be in our minds and dreams. That's not to say I wouldn't go see one if it was made! I'd be right there on opening day, but I think it would be a disappointment for the people who love the books and expect that same quality and imagery from a movie. It's fun to daydream about, but I'm just as glad that there won't be a movie any time soon. Sheep-shaped popcorn balls to everyone! Don't get me wrong, were there a movie to come out I would lie on the cold sidewalk to be the first to see it, and were it made a TV-Movie or miniseries I would have my VCR set months ahead, but I've got several reasons -why- I don't think it would make a good movie. And several why it would *Good* Kickin' sountracks *Bad* Hard to show certain Gifts *Good* Seeing the world of Velgarth in reality *Bad* Scenes of Talia and Ancar and Hulda would make you retch *Good* Two words: Secondhand Costumes *Bad* Face it, no actors alive could portray any of them, because something would be wrong with the picture, we all know it. *Good* Can you say 'Extras'??? Though I would like to place particular emphasis on the two articles referring to secondhand costumes and extras, I would torture for either, kill for both. Well, maybe not, that's decidedly most un-Herald-like. Allright. End of my opinions. ONCE. And was VERY dissapointed. Tolkin would NOT approve. BUT my favorite book of all time was made into a movie ... and was WONDERFUL. I'm talking about 'The Last Unicorn'. Part of the reason it turned out so well, I think, was that Peter S. Beagle did the script and oversaw the making of the movie so the book and the movie are nearly identical, word for word. It's also not Disney (it's done by Japanese artists) and I think that was wonderful. Their animation styles are so different from the North American styles that I thought it worked quite well, both visually and scriptorially. (Is that a word? Darnit!) If Misty did was Beagle did, I'm suspecting that things would turn out just as well. Although she might insist that Larry designs all the characters ... *shudders* But at least the script would be accurate. And, of all the Velgarth books, I think the T&K adventures would work best as a movie. They're easily adaptable and the magic Kethry uses can be made showy for the benefit of the audience. That is one thing to concider, though, is adaptation. All her series are too long to make a movie -- even a 3 hour one. You could do them in installments but I wouldn't trust Hollywood -- they're abismally bad for botching part II or part III. In anything there would be heavy editing, and things would be made 'showy' for the benefit of the audience not aquainted with her works. So in the endi, I'm thinking that it might be best to leave well enough alone. Most books cum movies are TERRIBLE and I'd rather not have any movie/mini series/whatever than a bad one.
