I didn't get anything for about a week, (but then I was set to "postpone" for a short time and fixed it about 3 days ago. The Tolkien Mailing list I am on dropped off the face of the Earth a couple of days ago too. >From: moonshadow-+AT+-startrekmail.com >Reply-To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk >To: elena_gwynne-+AT+-hotmail.com >Subject: list question >Date: Tue, 8 Feb 2000 03:52:31 GMT > >Just a question: > >Am I the only one who hasn't gotten mail from the list >in the past three days? > >ObMisty: Ummmm....okay...quiz: in what book were the >Shin'a'in first mentioned? Nope. The list was down for a few days. It happens from time to time, be it either the server can't connect, or it's down for maintenance. Van was probably getting his screen dyed ;). > ObMisty: Ummmm....okay...quiz: in what book were the > Shin'a'in first mentioned? ("first book" meaning > publishing order) Mentioned? I believe that it might have been LHM. I can't recall the Arrows books specifically for any references. If they were there, they were brief and in passing. Hm. Come to mention it, I don't recall much said about them in LHM either. Perhaps the Oath books? Bright be thy day, Wintershard Councilor of Mist: e-mail us with questions about the list ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 08 Feb 2000 01:50:13 CST From: "Athena Foster" To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: list question Message-ID: <20000208075013.24934.qmail-+AT+-hotmail.com> >Am I the only one who hasn't gotten mail from the list >in the past three days? I haven't gotten much either >ObMisty: Ummmm....okay...quiz: in what book were the >Shin'a'in first mentioned? ("first book" meaning > publishing order) Well, there was the early Tarma and Kethry stories in MZB's Sword and Sorceress, which came out before the Oathbound. But other than that, unless I missed it somewhere in the The Heralds of Valdemar Trilogy, The Oathbound, which came out in July of '88, was her fourth book, making it the first place the Shin'a'in were mentioned. Although Ch.8 of the Oathbound came out on an audio tape in '85, but that doesn't quite count as a book. It seems to be down to disk space problems at Hotmail's end, but I've seen list digests sitting here for anywhere up to two or three days waiting to try to get through. You may wish to consider using a different freemail provider. Anyone on Hotmail who wishes to check if they're still subscribed to the list should send mail to listproc-+AT+-herald.co.uk, leaving the subject line blank, and in the message body write: set mercedes-lackey mail You should get a message back in relatively short order (certainly less than a couple of hours, unless Van really _has_ got his knickers in a knot -- and as it happens that hasn't occurred just lately) showing what your current mail status is. If it's POSTPONE, then either Hotmail has been telling Van you're over quota, don't exist, or Van's just been getting too many messages saying "Couldn't send mail for 6 hours, still trying". Send another message saying one of: set mercedes-lackey mail ack set mercedes-lackey mail noack set mercedes-lackey mail digest to reset your status. Its the scene where Orthallan corners Kris to get info on Talia, and he makes conversation by telling him that his brother lost his Shin'a'in horse in the recent flood/natural disaster. I'm ashamed to say that I've been reading the series since it came out in 87, and I never noticed that.
