He also tried to steal the heartstone to use as a large node in the winds books. Theres some textev that masters can't access nodes, not because they can't see them but because they can't control that amount of power and so kill themselves off if they touch it. Think the text ev is in what Quentin is thinking when he first uses mage sight on Elspeth and Moonsong to Vanyel in MPawn. Which reminds me 2 votes for Karal, 1 for Radevel 1 for Vanyel and a 1/2 for Firesong I've missed someone ought from the best male character list, anyone for anyone else? Or I declare Karal the outright winner. ---------------------- Liz Hoffman E.G.Hoffman-+AT+-soton.ac.uk ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 24 Feb 2000 11:44:58 -0500 From: Andrew Johnson To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: MERCEDES-LACKEY digest 2222 Message-ID: <38B5600A.5048FDB7-+AT+-rpi.edu> Heyla, everyone. After a few month of lurking in the shadows, I've decided to jump in (there aren't any really comfortable chairs in the shadowy parts of this place anyway). ML-background-wise, I was given Magic's Pawn to read by a friend when I was in college, and I've never looked back. My favorites are the SERRAted Edge books (I'm a sucker for urban fantasy). Currently, I'm trying to get my hands on the local library's copy of Owlknight, and it isn't going well. The terms Adept, Master, etc. are bandied about off-handedly in a lot of the books, but I don't recall any explanation of what the distinction between these levels is, other than whether they can use/control/uninstall node energy. I do remember (textev is backordered) that one passes through the levels with training and practice, but that if you max out at Master, nothing is going to make you an Adept (with certain exceptions for main characters, heheheh). So: is there a distinction other than the node energy abilities? Is it just, "If you can control node energy, you're an Adept; if you can only use node energy, you're a Master, etc." or is there more to it? If that's all that is in the text, does anyone have any ideas of what other differences might be? For example, "Adepts can control weather or ... uhhhh ... wear white after Labor Day." Anyone? That's all from me. ::puts on rain slicker and sits back down, eyeing the splooshers suspiciously:: A. -- Andrew Johnson http://www.wizvax.net/madtom/ NBCS: B0(3) f+ w- c++ g+ k++ s(++) m e h+ r+ p johnsa2-+AT+-rpi.edu FWBCS: pinot noir/gewurztraminer**** "How am I supposed to hallucinate with all these swirling colors distracting me?" - Lisa Simpson ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 24 Feb 2000 13:25:17 EST From: PsionicElf-+AT+-aol.com To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: MERCEDES-LACKEY digest 2222 Message-ID: <14.12f134d.25e6d18d-+AT+-aol.com> Adept: Can access and control node power, or anything lower. Can also use Gate spells (that only uses energy from a mage, or their lifebonded partner) Master: Can access and control ley-line power (can access node power, but can't hope to control or survive it) and any lower form of energy. Journey Man: Can access and control ambient life life magic. Earth magic. Can also store energy to be used later. Apprentice: Can only access and use internal energy. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 24 Feb 2000 22:14:35 GMT From: troll-+AT+-netcomuk.co.uk To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: MERCEDES-LACKEY digest 2222 Message-ID: <2000224221513541-+AT+-netcomuk.co.uk> On 02/24/00 16:38:36 Liz wrote: >Ma'ar in his later incarnation (anyone remember his name, >taken out by Vanyel in his final strike at the end of >MPrice) used node power channeled throughother mages. Vanyel managed to access a node when he fought the cold-drake at the end of MPawn, when he was still training under the Tayledras. Does this mean he was an Adept already? I wouldn't have thought so, though he had Adept-*potential*.
