I'm basing this on "would I like to hang out with these people and be buddies with them" liked. As characters and stories, they all rock. My vote is either Medren or Tantras (the herald in Vanyel's time, not the companion incarnate) Medren always seemed to have a wicked funny sense of humor to me. So did Tran. Of course I did like Eldan in BTSword. And Alberich started to grow on me after the whole "Have you ever seen Alberich when the Bell rings?" conversation. Daren was always a fop. I still can't really see him with Seleney. Oh the wonderful world of life bonds. Vayel and most of the Hawkbrothers I liked, but I didn't ever think I could go hang out in a pub and have a drink with them, ya know? I got too wrapped up in Karal's insecurities to feel "comfortable" with him as a person. Stef I liked alot, except I kept coming back to the "he's really 'Lendel" problem, and I didn't like Lendel. There's something about co-dependence and life bonds that always bugged me. Dirk - again, too smarmy in love with Talia. Liked him, but... Kris was cool, if a bit of a priss. Skif - again I come back to the "I know too much about his insecurities." Uthro I liked. Amberdrake was really really really cool, now that I think about it - probably the only lifebond I was really "okay" with. Skan, also very cool in a raptor sort of way. Liked Gesten too. Haven't really warmed up to any of the "Owl" characters like I did with the other series. I like them, but they don't seem to have imprinted on me as much. If we're looking at all the books....hmmm.... I will always love Wren in the Lady Lark series. Of course, I am prone to adorations of older men, so I can identify with Lark there. Andre seems very cool. As does Mark from the Di Tregarde series. There's my comments. toodles, Susan, who is de-lurking after Auntie Mel fixed the email glitch. In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move. -- Douglas Adams ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 25 Feb 2000 14:57:41 -0500 (EST) From: Laura Jean Rossier To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: MERCEDES-LACKEY digest 2223 Message-ID: here's a thought...you remember how yearbooks used to have those superlative lists (most likely to succeed, best smile, etc) I don't know if anyone's ever done one for Velgrath before.... if you want to email them to me then I'll compile them...that way the list doesn't get to crowded...or just email to this list and I'll try to keep track. I just found this list today. I'm on two others so I tend to be less squeamish and not lurk so much. I was actually looking for a personality-type mailing list and found discussions in the digests for this list on the personality types, instead. (I am an INFJ) I'm not exactly sure how long ago this discussion took place and forgive me for reopening the can of worms, but Vanyel is NOT an extrovert. :) Some background on me: Actually began reading Mercedes Lackey around the end of middle school, beginning of HS. The first I read were the Magic's Pawn Valdemar books and they still make me cry! (Honest.) From there I sorta went all over the place, reading Arrows of the Queen, The Black Gryphon, Oathbreakers/Oathbound, and the Diana Trigade books (it's been a long time). I am not a rabid fan, but I must say that after getting sucked into the Wheel of Time books I still respect Lackey the most out of many fantasy authors. There are a few of the Valdemar trilogies that I just didn't like, so I know I'm probably not as devoted as many of you, but that's okay with me! ;) Anyone else have any Misty books they really didn't like? I'm curious. Of course, most are great. I am currently a freshman majoring in English and I pretend that I am able to write fiction (although only a bit of fantasy) myself. I seem to also have found a discussion of favorite male characters. Mine: Vanyel 'Lendel (Oh stop laughing. He was so much cooler than his replacement) Kris Jaysen (I hope that was the correct spelling. I know there is later a companion with the same BASIC name). The rest just...didn't strike me. But then, I only have the earlier books as a reference. While still in high school (sometime last year) I picked up Sword of Ice, though, and I LOVED it. Damn, what a way to tie up the loose ends within the earlier books. That is one thing I rarely find in Lackey--loose ends. Wow, I talked a lot. You probably don't believe I'm INFJ, do you? ;) Erin ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 25 Feb 2000 19:47:35 -0800 (PST) From: Dawnfire k%27Leshya To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: languages Message-ID: <14392676.951536855352.JavaMail.imail-+AT+-pugsly.excite.com> does anyone know if there is a full work list with meanings for the languages that she uses in the valdemar series??? thank you all trin _______________________________________________________ Get 100% FREE Internet Access powered by Excite Visit http://freeworld.excite.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 25 Feb 2000 20:08:03 -0800 (PST) From: Dawnfire k%27Leshya To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Shin'a'in and taledras languages Message-ID: <7934284.951538083705.JavaMail.imail-+AT+-pugsly.excite.com> heyla, did you ever happen to get the lists you were looking for??? i would really like a copy, if you please...thank you muchly... zhai'helleva trin On Thu, 30 Dec 1999 20:32:06 GMT, mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk wrote: > I am a big fan of mysti's work, and also an amature > linguist. You know, I really might be wrong and my books are MIA or at least at home somewhere mysterious but I could have sworn that there was a small glossary, either in the back of the Oathbound/Oathbreakers books or... no, I believe it must have been those... In any case, I know that I own(ed) paperbacks with a small list in the back. You may want to investigate in those books... There were also the lyrics to the Filk songs but in the backs of different books... THAT might have been what was in the back of Oathbound/breakers, but I know there is a list of vocab also somewhere. Styx mirrors her, where he lays stretched out in a ray of sun on the floor* Okie, my favorite male Velgarth character would have to be... Eldan. We haven't been in his head enough to know about all his complexes and insecurites, but I've seen enough to know that he admits to his mistakes, and will work to fix his faults. Besides, he's a Herald, so he's gotta be a pretty good guy... lol And, now for the main topic of my posting............. The Friendship Ring! I've had it for about a week (courtesy of the gracious Freedom Walker), and it is now time for me to pass it on. I honestly do not recall who the past recipients are of the original ring, so if I give it to someone who has had it before, please forgive me, and just take it!! It's not so much the ring, but the meaning behind it... so, on that note... *Li'nia slips the tri-colored ring off her finger, and, holding it up to eye level, looks at it one last time. She smiles softly, then walks through the Hall of Mist and stops in front of Kitanya. Holding the Frindship Ring out, she explains, "To someone I haven't really met yet, although we must share some of the same passions if we are here in this Hall, I give to you the Friendship Ring. Sometimes it is given to a good friend, sometimes it is given to one who we hope will be a friend in the future... Anyone else have any Misty books they really didn't like? velgarth-wise, the arrows trilogy just never registered with me. i've read it (entirely, all 3 books) maybe twice. i'll pick up a book and read a few pages here and there, but not the whol thing. actually, a funny thing happened (for years) at the bookstore. i kept seeing the arrows books, and i'd pick one up, read the back, and think "nahh." that all changed when i picked up mpawn, and yes, they still make me cry too (a bit embarrassing when i'm reading them on public transportation). i'm still mad w/ misty about what she did to van towards the end of mprice -- that just makes my teeth grind. non-velgarth books -- serrated edge, but i've already vented about these. Favorite male characters: vanyel; firesong; an'desha; silverfox (most tayledras); cousin radavel; karal; darian really there aren't too many characters that i actively dislike. there are a number of characters that don't make much of an impression on me, but those i ignore. but yes, i also like tylendel (would van have been a mage & chosen if tylendel hadn't died?). Vanyel sword of ice was fun -- i'm looking for more. one thing that marion zimmer bradley (mzb) did for a number of years was publish darkover anthologies (that's where misty got her start -- in marion's slush pile), which certainly helped fill in or flesh out certain areas. since misty currently doesn't have any plans to write about the founding of valdemar (see firebirdarts.com), then how about a short story or novella from a friend? freddie __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Exactly. He was miserable because he found dealing with his surroundings very difficult--it did not come easily to him. Were he an extrovert: A) he would have stood up to his father and Treesa when he caught them having that stupid conversation involving the priest (specifics evade me but his mother was using him to get at her husband and yell about the priest). B) He would have at least been more sociable with his cousins, because it would have come naturally. C) He would have probably approached Tylendel instead of watching him from afar. Even if he didn't HIT ON 'Lendel, he would have liked him and PROBABLY tried to initiate contact because, again, socialization would come easier. D) and most important! IT WOULDN'T HAVE WORKED! :) Vanyel needed to have his weaknesses and insecurities and the personality type he had for the whole trilogy to work. :) > Anyone else have any Misty books they really > didn't like? > velgarth-wise, the arrows trilogy just never > registered with me. i've read it (entirely, all 3 > books) maybe twice. i'll pick up a book and read a See, I really liked Talia, but I had this feeling throughout Arrows that it was geared toward girls, young-ish girls... I mean, the feeling seemed to disappear in the latter books but clearly Talia was a young woman when it began and her thoughts were really quite... juvenile. Though you expect it has to happen, you don't really see this child becoming a Herald. I must say she is quite redeemed by the end of the trilogy and is my favorite female character (with Savil at a close second). Books I didn't like: Oathbound/breakers. I just had to start skimming after a while. The whole "Need" concept really bugged me. Two little crusading women running around saving women from domestic violence is okay, but that sword just REALLY irked me for some reason, and the bad guys were...sketchy. A friend sent me a copy of the Oathbound filk tape, though, and it has provided a LOT of amusement (lyrics are probably in the back of the book). I really liked Tarma after hearing the tape. Kethry I can do without, still. Still, she is related to Kerowyn, which is a redeeming quality. ;) > sword of ice was fun -- i'm looking for more. one .... > certain areas. since misty currently doesn't have any > plans to write about the founding of valdemar (see > firebirdarts.com), then how about a short story or > novella from a friend? I totally agree, but I was speaking more of the small loose ends (Vanyel's affair with the Jonne character etc).
