After the comment about Vanyel's introversion, I got to thinking about some of the main characters of Misty's that I was familiar with. Is it just me, or are most of her main characters introverts? Varying degrees, of course, but most of them don't seem to be anything like a party animal. A few close friends, need solitude; yep, seem like introverts to me! Off-topic here. Let me put in a plug for the Keirsey-Bates Temperment sorter. It can be very helpful both in work and in personal relationships. It allowed my mother (a raving extrovert) to see that there was nothing wrong with me when I would rather stay home than run around all the time. She backed off and let me choose the things I was really interested in. Hey Val, greetings from a fellow INTP. I had never thought anything but bad about gays and lesbians. But after reading a lot of those, it dawned on me. "They're people too....... and I'm one." I had never thought of the possibility of being gay until I read. She has read a lot of my fantasy books as hand-me-downs but never any Misty. Also, however, she is considerably more biggoted than I. She believes the stereotypes and I know that she looks down upon gays and probably doesn't even believe lesbians exist, given her peers and my mother's encouragement (long story). Anyway, I was just thinking--what if I gave her a Misty book? (LHM of course). I know this might cause some trouble in my home. My sister is much more the social butterfly than I and more interested in conformity. It's entirely possible it won't work for her because she is entrenched in all the stereotypes and my mother and stepfather encourage them. Also, my mom might get irritated with me if my sister were to "tattle." So I am a bit conflicted, but I believe my sister is kind and good, and it was at this age that I first saw all of this. Granted, I think things were quieter altogether (media-wise, and in my family) back when I was my sister's age. Hmmm... Do you think I should give it a shot? Second: (I'm not sure the name of the person who posted this...MDennis?) > Proposed topic -- why would Companions come in the shape of horses, why > not as an another animal? Can anyone suggest another useful shape > (Besides a firecat) for a companion? This should allow us some interesting > and entertaining speculation. I think it is pretty simple. Horses are already an animal generally considered to have a very human personality. Trust me on this, I have met quite a few, and it's really true. They are wonderful (although I did not always like them). It doesn't take a huge stretch of the imagination to see them as just that much more... Furthermore, the Herald can very easily take them everywhere. The only other alternative I could think of (Firecats excluded, although I don't know why cats are quite so special in this sense but I never finished the proper trilogy (yet)) would be a dog, and you wouldn't see Vanyel making a little dog follow him all over Valdemar on his rounds, would you? Perhaps a wolf.... Yes, a wolf would work. Rubrick explained the Companions "choice of shape" to Karal and Alberich. I believe he said that they were transportation, extra help in a fight, are capable of going unnoticed - they're just white horses, after all, people really notice Firecats and Bondbirds mainly because of their size, and you can't ride a Firecat or a Bondbird ;-) -- Paige Proud Mother of Victoria 04/24/98 and ??? 05/??/00 GO LEAFS!!! I know I am a newbie but I have a suggestion. There is nothing distinguishing about the mails from this list when I get them--they are sent as if directly to me and not through an actual mail server (this is different from other mailers I am on which have different flags from these messages) and nothing in the subject line. I am on a lot of lists and generally just get a lot of mail. I also can't filter (in this mail client) by the reply-to address which would be the only consistancy in all the mails. So, I don't know if this has been discussed before but would it be horrible to add some little thing like [ML] to the mails? Most mailing list programs will do this automatically but since this is run the way it is I don't know if it is a possibility. Ob-Misty: I will forever stew over one thing in LHM. No I'm not going to debate the merits of 'Lendal vs Stef... but dammit... why doe Stef get the credit for being Van's lover and get to meet up with him after death and all? Just because 'Lendel Was A Very Bad Herald ? Stef was such a weaker character. I want to kick Misty every time I read about this little part of her writing. I know it is sacreligeous but damn it really makes me mad. Yeah I know Stef is the later character, but isn't he just SUPPOSED to be 'Lendel anyway? It's the same soul, eh? Wouldn't it have added an additional element of, "Wow, how weird and cool," if it ended up that 'Lendel reemerged? I suppose one can argue that Van was able to get "over" 'Lendel through Stef, though. It still really irks me. Wouldn't it have added an > additional element of, "Wow, how weird and cool," if it ended up that > 'Lendel reemerged? Hmm, I think the answer to that is simple when you think about it, the Stef personality of the soul would have been stronger simply because it lived longer. Lendel died when he was what, 20 or so? Stef lived to be a very old man he would have much more life experience and he was the "last" reincarnation of that soul. Misty also did show that the two were one with the hair and physical features constantly changing. Another thing to think about, despite the fact that Van loved Lendel immensely those memories were always tainted with the pain and tragedy of Lendel's death and the preceding events. By letting the spirit stay mostly Stef there would be a bit less baggage. Still I think the spirit stayed Stef just because it was the form that had been around the longest. On another note I don't know how many of you check on the "Ask Misty" section in Firebird but did any of the rest of you note that Misty is going to be doing a full book on Alberich's early life after she finishes the one on Skiff? When I read that I practically jumped out of my chair, he is one of my favorite supporting characters and one of the most mysterious it will be great to learn more about him. Alberich is also one of my favorite characters and I've been hoping, particularly since the treaty with Karse was introduced, that he would get his own series, or at least a one-shot...I also didn't know about the one on Skif--is that Brightly Burning, the one everyone has been talking about? Forgive me, I have to admit that keeping up isn't my strong suit :) It seems with every book she writes, she opens up new areas for later books...I haven't read OwlKnight yet, but the 'barbarians' introduced in the previous book definitely piqued my curiousity...but I'm so glad she's going back to some of the older characters that seem to need their stories told. Another one (see if anyone remembers him) is Griffon...not a major player, but he had possibilities, particularly with his Talent for Firestarting. Any opinions? Nope, Brightly Burning is going to be the story of Levan Firestorm the firestarter that is talked about in The Arrows series when Talia and Griffon are getting their training. He called down a firestorm to save Valdemar from a Dark Army after his Companion was killed. Its one of those stories where you already know the ending but still want to know what really happens. I was thrilled when Misty said she was writing this book now I just wish someone could persuade her to write Sunsinger and Shadowdancer's tale or the story of the Founding but she has stated that she will never writing those stories since she prefers to keep some things mythical. She removes her cloak, shakes the rainwater out of her hair, and grabs a sheep-towel to dry off. She calls a joyous greeting through the hall and grins widely as it is enthusiastically returned. She starts to sing louder and is immediately joined by a chorus of voices sounding throughout the Hall. This starts a Misty sing-a-long that lasts quite awhile...(good thing I brought my guitar). She breaks out the sheep-shaped marshmallows, chocolate bars, and graham crackers...time for sheep s'mores! And some Chava for good measure! After all the singing and dancing dies down, she settles back onto a huge fluffy sheep-pillow next to some list-sibs to chat and listen to the sweet sound of the rain.::: << It's the same soul, eh? "The first (spirit) to become really clear was a strikingly handsome man, and if this was Firesong's ancestor, Vanyel, it was obvious where he got his beauty." (snip) "As the second spirit manifested, Karal didn't find him any easier on the nerves, perhaps because he couldn't seem to make up his mind whether to look like a muscular, square-jawed fellow who was a bit taller than Vanyel, or a slight, triangular-faced, large eyed lad who was shorter and more slender than the Herald-Mage." Hmm, come to think of it Van makes a fairly large cameo in WoFury too. How come Van's been dead for so long and he gets to appear in, and have a considerable affect on the outcome of, these books? I guess I just can't understand the fascination with LHM. I say bring in Talia, Elspeth and Darkwind, or Kero. They need more time too. Saying more constitutes a spoiler... go to your bookstore and look at the backs of some recent Misty books... ;) Oh well actually....it might not cover exactly what you're looking for, my brain is foggy right now. :) Erin ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 28 Feb 2000 09:58:07 GMT From: Melanie Dymond Harper To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Partially OFF Message-ID: <200002280958.JAA25357-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk> > I am on a lot of lists and generally just get a lot of mail. We will be changing software in a couple of months, though, to something which will be able to put in tags. On the other hand, there are in fact at least two consistent features. One is the Reply-To field, as you noted, another is "X-Comment: Mercedes Lackey Mailing List", and if you can filter on "From" rather than "From:", that will also be consistent.
