He opens the door and speaks. Remember, in the LHM series Van was given the choice of either going on to the Havens or staying behind and protecting the country. Rather then going to the rest that he so richly deserved (and desired) after his turbulent life he made his choice. He stayed in the forest of sorrows to continue protecting Valamar even after death. That is why he has had a continuing effect on the welfare of the nation. It is also why he is my favorite character. He gave everything he had, and more to protect the people of his nation. Yes, he has Stef/Lendel with him and his companion too, none the less his cannot truly rest, his vigulence continued, helping to guard those who knew him only as a legend, if they knew of him at all. He is a truly noble man, one I would feel honored to meet in real life and blessed if he would name me friend. I've read the LHM series to the point of wearing out one copy, yet everytime I reread the series it effects me. It has been a while since I last read it, now it seems to be a good time to read it again. Very few are the books that are able to reach me emotionally. Being just a few weeks short of 45 I've read a few books in my time. The LHM is definately in my top five list. Having said his piece (and more then originally planned) the tax zombie slowly closes the door and wanders back through the stacks to his desk, a few blank tax forms slipping from his fingers as he goes, mumbling numbers and occasionally dabbing his eyes as he remembers a truly honorable character. I just > don't really care.) Amen. Thank you. :) As for Firesong, I sorta thought that in the beginning and got used to him, but then, I haven't read of him in a while. I really don't like Elspeth which is the main reason I've stayed away from the newer books. If she shows her head one more time... ewwww. I can't even describe why I don't like her... mostly, she is just a SPOILED BRAT PRINCESS any way you look at it. I don't know, I loved Misty and Elspeth was the first I encountered, so I am pretty lucky I got drawn in enough to read the others, but it was mostly by the Hawkbrothers and their magic system--DEFINITELY not Elspeth. ;) As for creatures, I always thought the cute little thing Skan found (which I want to say he named Ke'chara but I think he might have just been using an earlier form of kechara in referring to her) was adorable. :) I liked Skan too so I don't have a least favorite creature. Message-ID: <2.2.32.20000228170752.0086a0b8-+AT+-intcon.net> First off, I would like to apologize in advance for anyone who is offended by my personal views. /begin rant First off, I liked the first two Arrows books, but hated the third. (little b*st*rt) I *loved* the Oathbound books, including all the short stories. I didn't like Thalkarsh, but that made his defeat all the sweeter. By the Sword was okay, but I don't like the companion-phobia thing. Okay, I *LOVED* the LHM books, to the point of reading MPawn 3 times in 48 hours when I first found it. I'm still pissed off at 'Lendel twin though, but I love 'Lendel. As to the re-incarnation thing, I think 'Lendel wanted to comfort Van without awakening old wounds, and that's why he chose to stay on as Stef, whom I also *liked*. I *loved* the Mage wars books, 'specially the black gryphon. I liked the mystery aspect of White gryphon, and my all time favorite curse is in Silver Gryphon, which I don't have in from of me at the moment, but, well, it's good. Okay, here's where I get miffed. I really do not like the Mage Winds and Mage Storms series. It's to over-blown, and I don't like any of the main characters. ('cept Hydona and mate, and the little fluffballs) I haven't read all of Storm Breaking, because I just got sick of Elspeth, Firesong (if they weren't of Van's blood, they would have not saving graces), Karal (ugh, he's so pathetic and sympathy causing), An'desha (I like him, a little, but he's so apathetic), and the whole giant colossal back lash form the cataclysm thing. (it's so, so, so.) To summarize, I like all of the books set before Selenay's reign, and of those I like a few. I've only read one other book of Misty's, The Ship Who Searched, which I can not rave enough about. I absolutley adore this book, it is a pinacle of the two authors (anne McCaffrey) emotion inducing glory, from the sadness of her hospital stay, to the happiness-and-other of the last bit. /end rant TaTaHaHaHa, In the name of Nephillim an' Dragons Kitanya friend of green Faith Exile fanatic Harper extrordinaire www.sca.org Vivat the Dream \\// May you live long and prosper \\// ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 28 Feb 2000 11:24:20 -0700 From: ShadowDreamer To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Partially OFF Message-ID: <3.0.3.32.20000228112420.0078e4dc-+AT+-mail> Erin writes: >I am on a lot of lists and generally just get a lot of mail. Ok, Erin, is this your home computer running Linux or is this a school computer running some sort of Unix derivitive? The reason I ask is this: (I am keeping this onlist just for this message in case other Pine people are interested.) My husband is looking into either finding or making a filter program that will work with Pine and other mail clients that use the same protocol. This filter program should work with ANY header material, although it will not work on the body. That means it'll catch all the strange headers. If he DOES do this, will any interested parties please e-mail me privately? He has created a program called PGPforPine, which some of you may be familiar with, and has passed that one on to another programmer. He is also in charge of an encryption/pgp program that runs graphically, but I believe it also does Pine e-mail. Again, anyone interested please e-mail me privately. >> As far as the question someone else posed about other forms for Companions, >> I think they should stay as they are. Of course. :) Well, as is the general sentiment, then, horses are just fine with me. I wanted to also address the 'Lendel "twin issue" a few of you have brought up (ooh, my first braid...) Susan said: > Most Angst ridden character: 'Lendel (who I liked, though that twin bond > thing sucked) Okay. I don't necessarily agree that the twin thing "sucked." I will admit that the fact that 'Lendel went crazy upon the death of his twin was QUITE unpleasant for me. I loved 'Lendel, and the whole time I wanted to scream, "No, NO, stupid, just calm down! This being insane thing is way overrated." ;) Then I realized something. Doesn't it (to some extent) make 'Lendel that much more nobel that he and his twin were thus connected, and that 'Lendel cared so much? Granted, he OBVIOUSLY went about it the wrong way, and it's not exactly mentally healthy either. But I don't think that the bond in itself was a bad thing. It really showed me how incredibly devoted 'Lendel could be (in his right mind) and how lucky Van was (for a time). Now, you could argue of course that without the "twin issue" 'Lendel could have stayed sane and been Van's ashke for their whole mutual lives together... I will give you that. But I think, although it was with much pain and trauma, these occurances aided Vanyel. Do you think he'd have become a Herald without all of this happening? I'm not sure. Probably Misty didn't think so. Remember, to an extent, Van showed selfish tendancies (particularly earlier on). Granted, he was treated like sh*t by his family and that can damage a person, but even hurt people need to work on themselves. So, although I was upset with the while thing, I really think it accentuated the good in all of the characters involved. I know that I personally felt Van and 'Lendel's lifebond the most while Vanyel was coaxing him out of the coma or whatever it was... I don't think many of you would want those scenes omitted, would you? Nevermind that taking away the twin issue would leave 'Lendel quite two-dimensional and we'd PROBABLY think of him as, "Oh, and what was Van's lover's name?" ;) Instead, look how involved we are in his character! Definitely. :) So don't feel alone! As far as which are my favorite if you compare Van and Talia, depending on the day it may be either or, but she's definitely my favorite female character. Also, I'm surprised that I think only one person mentioned Winterhart (from Black Gryphon). I really liked her a LOT... not sure why. Yet another question (to make this less fluff): The King guy in LHM and his wife... (I want to say her name was Sheri but I'm not sure. He was Randall, yes?): I found it really interesting the two parallels between this couple vs. Van and 'Lendel... Tylendel took all Van had, rippimg him open, to make this damn gate thing (damn you 'Lendel..god, that still makes me mad...), right? Then you have the second couple, with the king getting so very sick, and his lifebonded deciding to give her energy all to him: I know that some objection to that was brought up in the text of LHM... What do you guys think? Was it an okay thing for her to do to herself? I know she's not the King, but I was really conflicted about that. I mean, is it better to lose King AND Queen both at once than to just lose the King? I know that to live on without him would have been hard for her, but Van did go on with his life after 'Lendel, couldn't she have? I'm just being devil's advocate, here. :) I can go either way on the issue. What do you guys think? Was it an okay thing for her to do to herself? I know she's not the King, but I was really conflicted about that. I mean, is it better to lose King AND Queen both at once than to just lose the King? I know that to live on without him would have been hard for her, but Van did go on with his life after 'Lendel, couldn't shehave? First, Shavri WASN'T Queen. She was the King's life- bonded. she absolutely refused to marry Randale b/c she didn't want to be Queen. that was also why she freaked out when Jisa married Trever (sp?), her life- bonded. Trever was the Heir, and, as Shavri told Van, she had spend her life trying to keep Jisa out of the line of rule. Also, I don't think that Shavri would have survived the death of Randale, even if she hadn't linked her life-force to his. What kept Vanyel from dying was Fandes, and, as it was pointed out in LHM, no one could figure out why Taver had Chosen Shavri as Monarch's Own. she was a Healer, and didn't even perform the MO's duties. Vanyel did that for her. Her bond with Taver was a very weak one, if I recall the text correctly (sorry, i don't have my books with me). The only reason I remember given as her being Chosen MO was that she WAS a Healer, and Randale was sick. I guess being MO meant that she could physically be around him all the time more so than just as a lifebonded civilian/non-member of the government. So, to answer the question, yes, I think it was an okay thing for her to do. she was going to die anyway when Randale did, so she might as well help ease his pain as much as she could. and even if she could have survived the actual death of Randale, she would have death-willed herself anyway, I think. And wasn't that the conclusion that Fandes and Vanyel drew as well? But is there anybody else out there who thinks that they would rather have a Firecat instead of a Companion? I like horses. I like almost all animals, for that matter, and they like me. :-) But given the choice...I'd take the cat. Sometimes I wonder about the cat who already owns me...maybe he's in disguise? In that case, one of these days I am going to GET IT from him for having him neutered as a kitten... Another thought, Shavri WAS a healer and I'm assuming with all the empathy a healer normally has. Being lifebonded to Randi she would have felt every ounce of pain he felt and being an Empath would have doubled that pain. In the end Shavri may have bonded herself to him out of self defense to try to ease the pain. And since it was a lifebond she would have had no second thoughts about doing this, she loved Randi and if that meant she would die with him I don't think that would have bothered her at all. She knew Jissa was going to be ok, they had made ammends before the link happened. It may seem a bit cold but Valdemar did not need her except for what she could do for Randi, if she chose to die with him it was just that, her choice. This wasn't a situation like Van's he was going to be desperately needed in the future everything that happened was for a reason. It would have been cruel for Shavri to have been forced to live with her lifebond gone. But that's just my opinion. My bad. :) My, it's been a long time. I will have to be borrowing my sister's books over vacation (mmm, almost there.) I hope she's read them by then! (March 12 or so).
