They are very D&D like. And are some of the first ML I read. There are three more in the series, besides the ones you named, The Choas Gate, being one of them, but they weren't written by ML. IN fact they are one of the reasons I started reading Josepha Sherman (great author, very knowledgable on celtic things). I've always thought that she based her Bardic Voices stories on the Bards in Bard's Tale. They have a slightly more powerful form of magic, definately less subtle. And the dark elf is to die for! If you like orcs and fairies and lots of elves, they are a definate read. Two ears up! In fact, I hated them. I thought the plots were stale and trite. I cursed Misty the whole way through for the wonderful characterisations (which I early on had identified as the bulk of her work as co-author) which dragged me kicking and screaming through to the last page (the dark elf bard WAS a stroke of genius). I think a lot of it had to do with the constraints of the game-world Misty and Ms. Sherman were writing in. At least I hope it did. I initially got into Misty because she *didn't* fall into the AD&D trap that so many other fantasy authors did. I loved the fact that her books relied on practicality and "reality"...battles *aren't* fun. Sucking chest wounds *do* hurt if you're not wearing full-covering armor. You'd better have enough money if you're going to travel the roads, because kindly innkeepers are few and far between. And finally, sometimes having songs written about you and having same songs sung far and wide is a damned NUISENCE! (Thank you, Tarma. :) OOTH, it HAS been nearly 7 years since I last read any of the Bard's Tale. So this entire rant may have been completely misdirected. I'm pretty sure I have them all, even a few of the offshoots written by Mark Sheppard. It's been a while since I've read them though, matter of fact, I think it might be time. I just have to finish reading the other 40 books or so that I've picked up in the last 2 months most of which have absolutely nothing to do with Misty, but all contain high-fantasy. A really good series (and I have to say there aren't enough of them) is the Bard's Tale series. I believe Holly Lisle collaborated on one of those books About the Owl Series... Yes, It did go a bit slowly for my tastes. But I can't help but get the feeling that the trilogy was filler. It was nice not having to deal with a great dramatic tragedy for a change. All in all, it was a pleasant series to read as long as no one is expecting anything to be accomplished. ~~~ Trinity ~~~ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 21 Mar 2000 19:12:50 -0800 (PST) From: "Li'nia Stormdancer" To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: (ML) too quiet!! It just was a little slow in my opinion ======================================================= I am coming out of Lurkdom to encourage a fellow SERRAted Edge reader (or a hopeful reader!). I LOVE ML's Urban Fantasies. I like the introduction of elves to racing; also the "Knights" books were good reads for me. There's only a couple I'm not a huge fan of (non-Tannim ones for the most part; imagine that! lol). I wasn't too crazy about "Bedlam"; I had to drag my way through that one. "Chrome Circle" is probably my fav of those, followed by "Born to Run"; Misty's choice of music in those is wonderful! I didn't care for the first "Owl" book, but I think it picked up a bit by the second, and the third is a good read, too. Sorry, I'm rambling..... Um... an ObMisty... Okie! If you could create a place where everyone could go and just talk and relax, what kind of place would it be? Which would you prefer? I mean, Misty has created the pools for the Tale'edras, the Compass Rose for the scholars in Haven, etc. I was just wondering about that, since I have such a hard time finding a place like that, and getting very wistful when I read things like that. ===== ---<---<---<----+AT+- Li'nia Stormdancer -+AT+---->--->--->--- Peon to the Powers That Be, (Hopeful)Goddess of All Things Possessed, & Caretaker of the Arena of Discussion and Dissention __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I bought them because I used to buy anything with Misty's byline on it (I have since learned first to at least scan through it), and found that I really just didn't care for them.
