Essentially, what we are trying to figure out is if there is a pantheon of dieties or if there is a particular set of deities that just go by different faces and names. For example, we know that Vkandis is worshipped in Karse and Iftel. We also know that Vkandis has been alluded to as having a female consort whose name is similar to Kalenal. Opinions? I remember reading about the Goddess consort to Vkandis - I think in one of the Storm books when Karal is speaking about one of the old histories he is reading. Vkandis and Kal'enal could have been consorts at one time, but that still leaves a lot of unanswered questions. Example: Mero - the cook when Talia joins the Collegium - is from a sect that only worships one god. Need's twin god/goddesses - Kalanel and Dina, Kelanel and Dira (or something like that - I am too lazy to go and dig thru my books!) The holderkin's goddess -Talia almost has to go to the cloister. If I could create such a place it would be very like Firesong and Andesha's little "vale" in the Companion's Field. It would be quiet and warm and have just enough room for maybe half a dozen or so people to gather at once, maybe 10 since they'll all be good friends or they wouldn't be there. Definitely a hot pool, maybe a cool one as well for use in the summertime. A nice well stocked kitchen would be hidden behind flowering bushes or vines, and a sitting "room" with cushions and comfy overstuffed chairs would be off to one side of the pools, seperated again by flowers or some sort of hanging vines. They'd hang from the trees I'd have planted in strategic locations. It would have to be temperature controlled or everything would freeze and die in the winter since I have to live up north or I'd go into snow withdrawl. lol Anyway, that got longer than I'd planned, please forgive the fluff! My OBMisty for the evening: I recently read for the first time a couple of the SERRAted Edge stories. I was pleased with her portrayal of elves and the elvish colonies. Just wondering since the Holderkin have a Goddess, though She seems to be fairly different from Kal'enel, or at least the Aspect of Kal'enel as seen by the Shin'a'in/Tayledras/Kaled'a'in. Additionally I don't think anyone mentioned the Rethwellanese(or whatever the correct adjective is) Trine, that Kero swore by right at the start of BtS(Agnetha, Agnoma, Agnira). Wonder if any or all of Them were among the deities that King Valdemar called on? Vkandis and Kal'enel seem likely too - Vkandis we know was worshipped in Valdemar at least as far back as Vanyel's life, and Kal'enel crops up when the spirit-Vanyel tells Elspeth/Darkwind/etc that he's still "in the service of the Goddess and Valdemar". This is also what kinda got us going. Kal'anel and Kelanel and Kalanel, etc, all seem to coincidental not to have been a "planned" connection in the mind of the author.>> Actually, the names were "Karanel" and "Kerenal" and they were both male. The Star-Eyed has, granted, taken a lot of forms, but they've always been female... I don't think we can squeeze these for into the "only two gods" mold. I confess that this whole idea--that every Velgarth god is either an aspect of the Star-eyed or Vkandis--grates on me. Everything does not have to tie together in a neat little package; I like it better when they don't. Someone already pointed out Mero's The Book of One. There's also the Cold God (and if he's an aspect of Vkandis *or* Kal'enel, I'll eat a full set of Companion barding without salt), Agnetha/Agnira/Agnoma (okay, I could possibly see these three as aspects of the Star-Eyed, since they're rather Mother/Warrior/Crone-ish, but you'd think if people were going to leave one aspect out, it'd be Warrior instead of Maiden... and the Sisters of Agnetha sounded kind of harsh for followers of the Mother, especially given Kal'enel's penchant for meddling). Shayana, who we never hear much about... a rain-god who was no longer worshipped in wherever it was that they finally got rid of Thalkarsh. Thalkarsh himself, who everyone was worried about becoming a god--if it had never happened before, don't you think they'd have been a little dubious? Nobody questioned his ability to achieve godhead if he got enough power--and who said flat-out that it was forbidden for the gods to war amongst themselves. If there are only two gods, and they're consorts, who is either of them forbidden from warring on? Even the 'Lord and Lady' of Valdemar--sounds, at first glance, like Vkandis and Kal'enel, but they *also* say 'Lord-dark and Lady Bright'. Kal'enel could be considered bright, all right, but I don't think anyone's ever been able to call Vkandis dark. Then there's the Holderkin goddess--again, I have a hard time believing she's an aspect of the Star-Eyed, who has shown a deep-seated tendency to meddle with her followers; would Kal'enel really put up with all that nonsense about how women should behave? There are other references as well, made more or less as throwaways and never gone into with any depth. Yes, the Star-Eyed did claim to be another face of Kethry's Lady Windborn, but this is at least logical--Kal'enel is frequently identified with the wind (see the Shin'a'in songs in the back of Oathbreakers), and Keth's Adept ritual rests heavily on the winds and the cardinal directions (north, south, east, and west), with which Kal'enel is also identified. Personally I think this was a little sloppy of Misty, but it worked well for the context, so hey.
