Message-ID: <20000411135311.61956.qmail-+AT+-hotmail.com> <> By the Sword, naturally. :) It was the first Misty book I read, and to date my favorite... a little more gritty and realistic than Mage Wars/Winds/Storms/Owls. Kero's still one of my favorite characters. <<>> <> God, I hope not! And now that I have the Vanyel-lovers up in arms... ;) Not that I don't like Vanyel--I do, though he's not my favorite--but he's had his happy ending. I don't want to see him have to come back and suffer some more. Besides which, since he *had* had his happy ending, there's not a lot of room left for him to grow as a character; he could reappear as a cameo character, but it'd be rather gratuitous, don't you think? Rather like Kero and Eldan's parts in Darian's Tale. And he's been and done the Wise Old Man on the Mountain thing in Winds and Storms. I personally hope Misty will leave him, Stef, and Yfandes in Bermuda. They deserve a rest. Zha'hai'allav'a, Raven Darkblade, Holy Hand of the Goddess of Elves, Knight and Founding Member of the Order of Unsung Heroes; Advocator of Eldan, Champion of Kethra and Hyllarr, Devotee of Maclyn, and Worshipper of Tal Rufen; and Mor the raven, her familiar. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Apr 2000 09:49:57 -0500 From: Amy Trujillo To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Favourite books Message-ID: <38F33B95.A72E2E78-+AT+-southwind.net> tamlin wrote: > OB Misty: if you were deserted on a desert island, and you could have ONE > Misty book with you, and ONE only (work with me here), what would it be and > why?. The club 3-in-1s don't count I take it? That's a hard choice I love the majority of misty's books, she is truly my favorite author although some others come in a close second anymore. But for a favorite book I'd probably choose By The Sword, it just has bits of everything that makes misty's books wonderful, and Kero is a fantastic character. If I couldn't have that I'd choose either Magic's Pawn or Black Gryphon. > SPOILERS FOR THOSE WHO HAVE NOT READ THE WINDS SAGA!. > > Does anyone think that Vanyel will come back as a Companion?. Hmm, actually I don't think they will come back at all unless a true emergency occurs. They had been in the Forest of Sorrows for centuries, both he and Stefan/Lendal had more than done their duty. In my opinion at least I think they deserve a very long vacation. The same goes for Yfandes, as close as she and Van were I can't see him coming back without her. And given Van's powers what sort of child would it take for him to come back as a Companion? It would have to be someone who was equally as powerful as he had been or who was going to be put in a similar position of having to save Valdemar. If for some reason they did come back I think it might be as a Grove Born, or more likely as Heralds. Well, according to Misty, he won't be. At DragonCon(? Anyone remember which DragonCon it was that Kory got this tidbit?) one year, one of our former list-sibs asked her about that and she said that Van and Stefen are gone "to Bermuda." Essentially, that their work is done and they've gone to there great reward. Which just goes to show that Misty doesn't know much about Gay culture or she would have sent them to P-town. =) This is completely off-topic, but I've already got my ObMisty in, so here goes: Is the phenomenon of "gay towns" and "gay resorts" (like P-town, Fire Island, Rehoboth, and others) a strictly American phenomenon or do other countries have the same thing? Anyone in other countries know about similar towns? Of course she can give him a cameo by doing a book set anywhere between the time of MPrice & Storms and sending someone into Sorrows for some reason... Actually, it would be kind of nice to have a book about Valdemar in "normal" times. That's what I was saying. In no way do I think that Kero learning to be a better officer, or climbing through the ranks for that matter, would be worth reading - or writing ;-) Also, we seem to get quite enough background information on some of her childhood her years as a scout and as Captain through flashbacks and comments made by Kero. It's not like LHM or some of the other books where there are large chunks missing and just enough info on what's missing to drive a person nuts :-) -- Paige Proud Mother of Victoria 04/24/98 and ??? 05/??/00 GO LEAFS!!! There was the one that was alluded to about "that young officer on the Karsite border", there was one of Vanyel, Yfandes, and Stefen as "ghosts" in the Forest of Sorrows....I think Misty made a good choice "farming" out those other vignettes to get some other perspective. Ditto for any of her other series (unless I could get the new omnibus of Born to Run and Chrome Circle). OB Misty: Hmmmmm Well First of all if I had to take one book it would have to be Magic's Price, just cuz I think the end is so cute. I know right now the one I want to get most is Sword of Ice. I've read the LHM, Arrows, Winds, and Storms, and unless someone has something to rave about, I haven't heard any ardent, passionate devotees of Owls or the Oaths. Besides, it sounds like there are some neat stories (ties imaginary string around her finger to remind herself to save money when prom-dress shopping to duck into B. For me, my friend is responsible for getting me addicted to David Eddings' Belgariad and I also like the MYST books by the Miller Brothers, I really hope they write another soon. PS Do you know that it can take you six hours to read thirty chapters (250 pages) of Dickens? It takes me like, an hour to read that many pages in a Misty book (ok, maybe not so many, but you know, it doesn't seem so long, but I'm sure you're all happy to know that Pip isn't miserable anymore, but I am. And just as I was trying to figure out if I really wanted to join when one or the requirements is to "analyze the Constitution, without the Amendments, and explain how the Amendments have made the original document work in the modern world" - yes, I know that that's only if you want to be a Herald-Mage, but what does U.S. history and politics have to do with Valdemar, and if it's only to show that you have political insight why does *everybody* have to write something about a country that may not be theirs? Or is it really only for Americans? I'd much rather show my political insight by writing an essay about why monarchy is a good system for the Netherlands and the similarities and differences in outlook and ruling style between Queen Beatrix and Queen Selenay. Moreover, I couldn't donate blood three times a year even if I didn't have a thyroid condition that makes it impossible, because Dutch blood banks only accept women donors twice a year. Erm. Pardon me for ranting. I had to say this to *someone*. When I said it to my husband, he said that Queen's Own obviously wasn't a real fan club in that case, but a ruse to breed good little Americans under the guise of good little Heralds, and I refuse to believe *that*. (except for some blind spots, my lifebonded is a very good guy who enjoys Misty's books just as much as I do). But please, someone tell me if it really doesn't exist any more, because I've got a link to it on my web page (that still works) and I don't like my links out of date. > Most all of us read other authors besides Misty, I was curious what > other fantasy series or authors were popular among listsibs.
