I've been pretty quiet lately, so to catch up on some of the discussion: (BTW, boy, you guys posts a lot...100 messages while I'm gone for five days....) I've just finished the Winds books, and when I first met him I *did* hate him - he does get a bit better in Winds of Fury when he learns compassion, but it's too late to endear him to me. >> Hmm, that was always why I *liked* him. His cockiness just seemed to make his moments of sensitivity more endearing (ie: Tre'valen's death, the raping of the faire boy, An'desha's return to his own body). And althought he was rather...self-centered, he was still funny and entertaining in my opinion. I'd wanted to be a Singer of Fire, but I never see any members posting anymore, so I've never asked. I didn't like what Misty did to him in Storms. I suppose it was necessary, and he was fine in the Owl books, but I really liked him in Winds. And even though he was self-absorbed, around his friends he was a real person, a joker, pretty sensitive. He was a Healer-Adept, and thus had to be an essentially good person, so I guess seeing those good characteristics through the competent (and aware of that :P) exterior made me like him. <> The problem I had with those books is that all the characters were too *perfect.* I mean, can anyone here name a single flaw of Darian? After he'd grown up, he was essentially perfect. Good-looking, well-mannered, patient, skilled, a nice person, etc. None of the characters had any major flaws or weaknesses. <<>For all that he had his problems I don't remember him ever being cruel or a bad person...and since my standards are pretty low that gets >my vote of confidence. and the playing of Elspeth off Darkwind in Winds (Winds of Fate?) while they were training.>> I guess I was the only one who found that hilariously funny. I gave three cheers for Firesong with that move. And with Karal, that was partial jealousy and sadness over An'desha mving away from him, which I understand, and part mental illness as a result of the Storms, as explained by Silverfox.
