I had a virus alert for you guys sitting "postponed" in my Pine box since Friday...no wonder I was sitting there wondering why my message never appeared on the list! ;) Anyway, I won't repeat what's already been established. The recent lifebond discussion has got me contemplating some stuff that's always puzzled me. 1) I am conflicted re: Elspeth and Darkwind...namely because I hate Elspeth, and to give her a Lifebond would be further spoiling her SPOILED BRAT image. ;) 2) Kero: I certainly wanted she and Eldan to be lifebonded, but I don't think she could leave him if they were... I think we'll find out if Misty ever decides to bring either near death, no? 2) Keren/Ylsa/Sherrill: The evidence leads me to believe that Keren/Ylsa didn't even know Sherrill was part of their picture, although that can be argued since they didn't seem to dislike her following them around--but clearly when Keren went all to pieces she was not sparing a second to think of Sherrill--of course, neither did 'Lendel think of Van when he lost his companion, but I am pretty sure that was a whole different animal (no pun intended). So: Do you think that Keren/Ylsa realized they were threeway bonded? Surely they'd never heard of such a phenomenon. Do you think Sherrill also knew she depended on both women? Do you think that, without Talia's intervention, Keren would have done herself bodily harm without thinking of Sherrill? Do you think Sherrill ever felt neglected and/or jealous by/of the two? Just some thoughts... --Erin -- Sometimes life gives us lessons sent in ridiculous packaging. So I found him in the arms of a student Against The Trecherous Use of Fur And he gave no apology, he just turned to me, stoned out to the edge of oblivion He didn't pull up the sheets, and I think he even smiled as he said to me, "Well, I guess our dreams went up in smoke, hehehe..." And I said, "No, our dreams went up in dreams, you *stupid pothead*." --Dar Williams (The Pointless Yet Poignent Crisis of a Coed) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 03 May 2000 08:38:05 -0500 From: Julia Gray To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: ML: Reincarnation Message-ID: <39102BBD.D82018A5-+AT+-oakton.edu> I was thinking about heralds returning as companions returning as heralds ... and about how at least one herald returned as a bard and how at least three non-valdemar people are heralds (Kero, Daren and Alberich). All of this led me to wondering: In Velgarth (not just Valdemar), do you think every soul/life-force eventually could come back as a herald? or are there a finite number of possible heralds? If there isn't an overlapping of gods with some of the countries, how do you account for non-valdemarians becoming heralds? Would gods give up those life-forces readily - isn't there some text evd that gods can be made by the power of worship, so wouldn't the loss of the type of life forces that are ideal for heralds potentially mean a weakening of a god's strength (unless they are the same gods in different guises)? If there are more heralds chosen (and correspondingly more companions born), would that argue against a finite number, or possibly for the possibility that there is a finite number but they don't always come back as heralds or companions (only when needed)? betha'lis, offering lemon creme sheep-shape cookies to all ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 3 May 2000 14:32:28 -0700 (PDT) From: Rochelle White To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: More Lifebond questions Message-ID: <20000503213228.15816.qmail-+AT+-web902.mail.yahoo.com> > > The recent lifebond discussion has got me > contemplating some stuff that's > always puzzled me. > I am conflicted re: Elspeth and Darkwind...namely > because I hate > Elspeth, and to give her a Lifebond would be further > spoiling her SPOILED > BRAT image. ;) > OK first of all Elspeth got over 'The Brat' stage and redeemed herself in the mage winds series. second, Is Elspeth and Darkwind lifebonded???? Starts in Valdamar? Message-ID: <20000503220102.57792.qmail-+AT+-hotmail.com> A while ago tacked on the bottom of a really long message I remember seeing a little note about all the new inventions in the storm trilogy. (Sorry, I don't remember who sent it.) The person who wrote seemed at least partially against it, as on first thought, am I. To me, the Industrial Revolution just doesn't seem like is has as romantic/anything is possible atmosphere as the current setting. But then again, as I think about it, I've never actually _read_ a fantasy book set during this quote, unquote 'era' so I can't tell you if it'd be absolutely abhorrent or not. All the series I've ever read have lead you right up to the brink and then dropped you. (Is Anne McCafferey planning on going any farther in the future with her Pern series? Not to switch authors and subjects on you or anything ;) So I think it would at least be an interesting trial read or what ever you wish to call it. Wow. That's a lot for me to type!
