Tiffany" > What about converting electricity into magic? > > David H Tiffany > This is something I've been thinking about...what is magic? The theme of the day for me has been (not ideal mantle compositions as it should be) magic and the death of magic. In a book by Barbara Hambly there was a focus on a world where magic had died and then watching the tv mini "Merlin" from 2 years ago, after the whole Arthur saga Merlin said that magic had died. So was magic something alive or was it just an energy that was used up? I've always thought of magic as just the ability to use the energy in the world around you in a differnt way. I know we've talked ley-lines and nodes to death. but I had previously just thought of them as just sinks for a type of earth energy like electricity, scientific. Now I'm thinking maybe something more connected to life-energy, from minds and emotions. dunno. just some thoughts. Sorry, I realize this email is long and jumping subjects. At least I think that I got something kinda Misty related for once! I would imagine from what I know about rocks in general that the intense heat and pressure from the cataclysm would metamorphose the country bedrock (kind of like the PreCambrian sheild in north america). A 'technical' term among geologists would be that the rocks were turned into metamorphic 'FUBAR's' (a FUBAR is a rock that is F-+AT+-#$*ed Up Beyond All Recognition!) We already know that there is a definate abundance of earth metals, I would imagine that there would be excellent metallic ore deposits found in the Dhorisha Plains in the form of hydrothermal veins produced by the cataclysm. Too bad Misty never mentions anything about mining... >You know......too little mention is made of geology in >literature. Rocks are cool! I wonder if anyone else thinks that magic is considered a non-renewable energy..something like fossil fuels. Once the magical energy is gone, will it regenerate itself over a human lifespan? I know that with the mage storms the magical energy was redistributed so that there were no longer large nodes (i think i remember reading that in OF?) or large ley lines, but that the magical energy available is like trying to collect enough water to fill a swimming pool by extracting the water from humid air. If the magical energy is a non-renewably energy source, will the 'industrial revolution' perhaps bring about the transition to fossil fuels or something similar..etc.? any thoughts on that or should i just attribute my thinking to too many environmental management classes? A page of poetry by Misty's fans would be fine -- but if the content of the poems dealt with any of her creations (Velgarth, any of her characters, the Guardians, etc.) that would be fanfic and for that yes, you would need her permission. IIRC if you go through Queen's Own you can obtain it. :) Some of the other Listsibs might be a little more knowledgeable in that area. Someone Wrote: (Sorry -- I lost the post -- my deleting tendencies tend to get away from me sometimes) >(Notice how most of her good deities are feminine? :) IIRC most of her Velgarth deities are consorts, with the female deity being the predominant deity. Unlike many cultures, however, her Goddesses aren't usually submissive, or the 'fertility Goddess' archetype, and tend to take on the virgin warrior aspect instead. I've found that the Star Eyed in her warrior aspect to be very like Athena in Greek mythology -- celibate, vengeful, and powerful. Her maid/mother/crone aspects seem to be more common, either as the fertility goddess archetype with the spring/summer/winter representations, or coincide with the lunar phases, both of which are more common in ancient cultures. However, the latter aspects don't seem to be as prevalent in her works as the Star-Eyed is. Maybe she's trying to break the fantasy genre 'Goddess Mold'?? And really, aside from the Star-Eyed, she doesn't really get heavily into religion at all, or at least she didn't in her earlier works. In the Storm series she explained a lot about the the Karsite's God (brain-fart. Been a while since I've read those books) but other than that she's avoided religious issues. I couldn't say about the Owl books or Brightly Burning (which I'm HOPING is breaking her recent going-downhill pattern) Anyway, that's the only real parallels *I* can see in her deities. Perhaps to someone else there are other deities that echo RL ones as well, but I'm tired and doped up on cold meds so I'm not thinking 100%. ;P ON MAGIC vs. TECHNOLOGY I don't think that there is a real fear that the Gods and Goddesses will fully retreat from the world -- there is so much *proof* of their existence that they wont just fade in importance like our God did. *ducks arrows -- I'm Catholic!! I'm not trying to bash anyone! And I know that not everyone *is* but I can't figure out how to reword that sentence. Blame it on the meds.** Here all we rely on is blind faith, but in Velgarth the people *know* there is a life after death, and *know* that their Gods/desses are real. And I also don't think that technology will advance precisely as it has here, just because they *do* have magic, and Companions. Wouldn't it be terrible if the Companions became obsolete! As for magic into electricity and vice versa -- I think it could be done. My grasp of physics is slim, but I *do* remember that one of the laws is energy cannot be created or destroyed -- only changed. Ergo it stands to reason that magical energy can be changed into electric energy, and vice versa. We can do it with kinetic energy into electric, and vice versa, after all. (ex. Waterpower. Batteries.) Cheers!! I assume it's a kind of clan patronymic and means something like "daughter of Sens' holding." Without knowing whether Talia's father was named Sens, it's hard to tell whether it's a real patronymic or not. That light pools together in ley-lines and nodes, so under MageSight, one would see living things radiating light, with straight-lined 'streams' of ley-lines and a 'knot' as nodes. As for it being non-renewable, when Sejanes is tutoring Karal in Channeling in Storm Breaking, he says that magic is either used up or goes into the Void. I would guess that it is then recycled into a new life being created. Perhaps the used energy goes to the Void as well after it is used. Also, I was under the impression (see the death of Falconsbane in WoFury) that when a living creature dies, the life/magic energy of it is given off and dissipates into the surrounding ley-lines. That could renew the reserved of the resources as well. If magic funtions similar to water, as the Mage Storms suggest, then perhaps ley-lines and nodes are like streams, and the Void is like a groundwater system that feeds the above-ground 'streams.' Since the Void is a plane very close to the material plane of ordinary life in Velgarth, maybe the Void is made entirely of magic, and its closeness allows this magic to seep into the material plane in places of thin-ness. Maybe these thin areas where the Void can interact with the material plane are the ley-lines. Just a thought. I will be glad if any of this makes sense. =P Zhai'helleva, ¤Silve¤ Knight of the OAM • Member of the CfWD, Albertan division • Co-ruler of the Great Spork Empire • Demon of Page-flipping • (Hopeful) Lady-o of the OoUH, Champion of Skif and Eric • ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 9 May 2000 15:46:52 EDT From: PunkadeIik-+AT+-aol.com To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Last names Message-ID: Bright the day, list-sibs! I'm guessing that all girls of the Holding have that last name, while boys have 'Sensson.' It is probably Holderkin tradition.
