Afterall, the abridged account of how Tayledras usually make one involves either using a natural formation or pulling the rock up from the bedrock. Quartz actuslly doesn't seem all that likely... the k'Sheyna heartstone and the one Vanyel encountered in Lineas/Baires were both fairly large, and it was noted that the one Van *made* was rather small. I'm no expert, but I don't think that finding a suitably large and solid formation of quartz would be all that likely... Rereading the Heartstone-making sceen in LHM, I note that Van's heartstone is a sphere of crystal (he doesn't say what kind), fused to the stone table, which is fused to the floor, which is fused to the bedrock. It's not sitting on the focus-stones; it was created from them. Pretty cool, huh? Adding in my two copper pennies here, as the list's resident geologist ;) quartz isn't actually a rock as such...it's a mineral. Rocks are composed of minerals. So bedrock cannot be quartz, although it can CONTAIN quartz. Bedrock is generally igneous(granite, diorite, gabbro, peridotite)or metamorphic (schist, gneiss). "Pulling the rock up from the bedrock", as quoted above, would likely involve heat, pressure or both...hence the resultant rock would be a metamorphic of some kind, exact composition dependent on the original bedrock(which could itself be already metamorphosed by a previous geological event, perhaps far in the past). So by that definition, the Heartstone would most likely be hornfels, schist or gneiss of some kind. Of course, Misty isn't a geologist, and may well not realise the distinction between rocks and minerals herself ;) in which case she may well have visualised the Heartstone as some crystalline mineral. The most common crystals found in igneous/metamorphic bedrock would be quartz, feldspars, mica, olivine and pyroxene...less common ones would include haematite, magnetite, topaz, corundum(ruby/sapphire), and diamond. Anyone's guess as to what Misty's visualisation of it is...
