I am pretty damn sure that >being shaych is not in >your genes, merely your personal preferences >Moonstalker :) I really do not mean this as a FLAME, but I find the above statement very insulting to those of us who are shaych. It is like saying all heterosexuals suddenly decided that they would fancy people of the opposite sex rather than people of the same sex. Personal preferences require some kind of thinking reasoning ability. Unless we are saying that all animals have this ability then personal preferences can be ruled out for shaych behaviour. I can speak with some authority on this as I did a research paper a number of years ago on the whole nature/nurture debate and had to look and a number of accounds of shaych behaviour within the animal kingdom, shaych behaviour occurs very frequently in many species. I knew I "liked" boys from the time I was 7 years old, it wasn't something I woke up one day and thought "oh I feel like a change". All the hell I went through dealing with my sexuality and the loss of my family because of it is not something I think anyone would choose if they had an alternative. If we are using text ev from Misty here MPawn:- "In all the world, there are more creatures than just man that make lifetime matings. Among them, some of the noblest- wolves, swans, geese, the great raptors- all creatures man could do worse than emulate in many, many ways. And with all of them, all, there are those pairings from time to time within the same gender. Not often but not unheard of either. The shay'a'chern pairing occurs in nature. How then 'unnatural'? Usual, no; and not desirable for the species, else it would die out for lack of offspring. But not unnatural. The beasts of the fields are innocent as man can never be, who has the knowledge of good and evil and the choice between, and they do not cast out of their ranks the shay'a'chern. There is no shame in loving." I'm really really sorry to be on my soapbox and as I said above I DO NOT MEAN THIS AS A FLAME to the person whose mail I am replying to. This is something I feel very strongly about. It's worth noting that, whenever a Herald becomes a Wingsib, they make a point of mentioning that the duties of a Herald would not conflict with the duties of a Tayledras, so presumably if it were only his vows to the Goddess, he could probably get Chosen. I think your key phrase here is "he is certainly doing a lot to help Valdemar." What more would he accomplish by being Chosen? It would, in fact, only get in his way, because he'd have to go to at least a few classes, and unless they worked out something special for him he'd have to go on Circuit. With Daren and Kerowyn it's different; they were helping Valdemar too, but it was temporary, in response to Ancar's attack. Something else was needed to tie them to Valdemar and, in Daren's case, to give him authority when he married Selenay. As has been mentioned, being good is not a guarantee for being Chosen. Like Natoli, Darkwind is more use where and what he is than at the Collegium and on Circuit. I also have a personal theory that being both Tayledras *and* Herald would be more coolness than any one person can handle. And Darkwind, were he Chosen, would be Tayledras, Herald, and mage. Death-by-coolness. This is the primary argument I used on the Queen's Circle when one of our members was pondering a Tayledras scout-cum-Herald. One, people keep mentioning sheep. The only time I've heard sheep mentioned in Misty's books is in M's Promise and Price, where Withen complains that the sheep are in the wrong pasture. Has that blown up, or is the sheep thing something entirely different? Another thing: how do you join the Circle? I've had plenty of time to develop a persona, and I think it's pretty good, but my computer s me, so I've never been able to find out anything other than the fact that it exists. Make that 3: Does anyone know Misty's adress,e- or snail mail? I have an idea for a story, but I heard that you have to ask permission before you do anything. Wind to thy Wings, and thanks for helping a poor bewildered list user. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Kick off your party with Yahoo! I really thought that AIVAS made the Pern novels better, because if you read The Chronicles of Pern or Dragonsdawn, you see that science was involved from the beginning. This not true in Piers Anthony's Adept books, but he wrote the magic in close to the beginning of the first book that you couldn't get used to the series without it. In MZ Bradley's Darkover books, the thing about laran and that these people came from Earth is hard to swallow. Is there something in the water? However, I am against Misty putting science into her books, beyond letting the artifacers discover steam boilers in Storms. There is absolutely no evidence of any computers of spaceships in the early books. I kinda like the idea of the artifacers putting boilers on wheels for cars, but they should stay a novelty. I would it if it became too much like earth. On second thought, Heralds would never use them. Think of being reincarnated as a car! LOL! __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Kick off your party with Yahoo! Is there something in the water? If you read carefully, esp. "Darkover Landfall" & "Worldwreckers" you'll discover that the a few humans interbred with Cheri(sp) with the result that esp powers (assumed latent and limited in the humans) were strengthened by the similar powers of the Cheri. I'd also like to point out that some people are confusing science, a method of investigating phenomena, with technology, the use of (improved)tools, in this thread.
