Falconsbane IS Ma'ar.  An'desha is a descendent of Ma'ar--one of many. 
Ma'ar could only possess those in his lineage.

Thanks.  It probably went unnoticed because that was the first time I'd

There's also Ravenwing - a Shaman from the Sundering times and an
feather mask artist in the "present", Firesong is a female Gate Guard in
Snowstar's clan, there's a servant (I think) named Medren, same as Vans
nephew.

I don't know that it *says* that they use node magic but don't you have
to use node magic to build a gate?  After all only Adepts can build
gates and only Adepts can use nodes, right?  Is that a logical
conclusion or am I going nuts?

Actually, not--because Firesong was protected by a Vail and all the mages
within it, and Elspeth was chosen before she began trying to use her Mage
powers.  So they simply were not vulnerable.

However, he took them over when they first used the *fire-calling* spell.
Now, when Van would have first used that spell (assuming he did, as he did
have a bit of Firestarting), he would have been under protections.  Not
only of his aunt Savil, but 'Fandes and the Hawkbrothers.  Elspeth as
well--when she was being trained, she would have been under all sorts of
protections.  I'm assuming that Firesong would have been the same way,
protected by his parents and Clanmates, as well as the shielding on the
Vale.  Now, I'm not saying that I believe that Van IS descended from Ma'ar,
just that it's a possibility that hasn't been proven one way or the other.
=)  But that person had to be relatively unprotected, I'm fairly certain.
The one instance we have of an actual example is An'desha, and he certainly
wasn't protected or trained at all.

Like I mentioned above...  he didn't take anyone. until they used the
fire-calling spell.  Also, I doubt that he would have taken Elspeth...  I
thought he only took over male bodies.  Now, that I could be wrong
on...but, well, who knows? =)

Actually, the magic to build a gate has to come solely from within the
person building the gate.  That's why the Hawkbrothers chide Savil for
gating herself to a wraith in MPawn, and why not even all the magic in the
node below the Palace in MPromise can help Vanyel when he's gating himself
and Tashir out, and part of the reason why he always ends up flat on his
back after gate-building.  The other part, of course, being his sensitivity
to gate-magic.  I'm certain I can find the exact textevd somewhere, if it's
needed, just let me know.

RE: K/Q Own and bonding...not only in Arrows in there the metion of Heralds
already chosen getting tapped by the Monarch's Own companion, but Van
mentioned to Fandes herself about how he was surprised Sharvi was picked -
he half expected Taver to pick him instead, and he thought the only reason
not was because Shavri was a healer.

Here's why I am thinking a Herald might get "promoted" to Monarch's Own. 

You have a Monarch (say a King) - King and Kings Own are buddies - they go
pubbing, know each other's families, the whole bit. Kings Own dies somehow,
Kings Own companion doesn't. King has other close buddy in the Heralds -
someone they also rely on, almost as much as Kings Own - maybe its a sister
maybe its an Aunt or something...Remember, Monarchs owns are inherited - you
don't get to pick a new one with each new king. The now dead MO could have
been his Mother's Queen's own.

Needless to say, you have a Herald that is close to the King, already
trained, and knows the ropes. It would seem obvious to the Companions maybe
that in absence of other needs (i.e. Heir needs the snot beat out of him/her
and no existing Herald is up to it.) go ahead and make this close buddy the
new Kings Own.

Now, lets put this in the Talia/Seleny/Talmir/Elspet/Lyra/Kris context first
- 
Talmir was really Sendar's Kings Own. He didn't jive with Seleny too much.
We all know that. When he died, there was a serious need around the Heir
that no Herald could fill (or so Rolan seemed to think.) so he went a
choosing. 

Now we have Elspeth, who gets along with Talia, and The Queen who also
needed a Queen's Own she could get along with. But look at the new Heirs -
Lyra and Kris (Misty - please tell us more about these two!!!!) They are
twins, and I bet one of them will be the Monarch and one will be the
Monarch's Own because they will have already formed the bond between them
that is so critical to the Monarch's Own's function. But until Talia dies, I
bet the MO twin of them will be choosen anyway, so that they will grow and
learn together. Didn't one of the companions say that there were going to be
"fights over those two in a few years" about which companions were going to
get to choose them? Sounds like a voluntary choosing to me - unlike what
we've seen in BB, and other tales. I bet the voluntary choosing is for
future MOs.

Everyone's debating whether Urtho and Ma'ar's
descendants' alignments (for lack of a better word)
are influenced by their ancestors; has anyone
considered that Urtho and Ma'ar, two of the most
powerful mages at that time, could have been
relatives? I mean, if magic is genetic, then it would
make sense for them to have a...uh, common ancestor,
ne? Maybe there was one person in the begining who had
the ability to control magical energy, and they passed
it to their children, who spread it around, etc. Urtho
and Ma'ar could have been two of this person's
descendants, therefore making them, and all other
mage-gifted people, relatives.

Satiran being Pol's Companion.

In that light I think it shows that it really wasn't Tylendel falt that he
did was he did in MP it was that his companion wasn't with him at the time
he
was plaining all this. And didn't push Tylendel hard enf to get at what he
was going when he blacked her out of his mind. And that Tylendel killed
himself becuase he left alone in the faced that on one was doing anything
about his twin being killed. Its just my thoughs sorry if it upsets anyone.

As for a Chosen not feeling adequate and not wanting to become a Herald, it
is possible. In Arrows of the Queen, the newly- Chosen are given the choice
to  leave if they truly feel they can't (or don't want to) be a Herald.
This is during their orientation.  Also, Selenay told Talia that if she
didn't want to be QO, they would find a place for Talia to be happy and
taken care of and send Rolan out again.

As for repudiating a Companion.  Well, companions repudiate the Chosen only
when the Chosen has been corrupted beyond hope.  I rather doubt a Guardian
Spirit could be corrupted.

New thread...
One thing I always wondered... upon the death of the QO, the companion
Chooses another to fill that role.  In AoQ, it was mentioned that usually he
Chooses one who is a Herald or about to be made a Herald. What about the
bond with that Herald's current Companion?  It must be broken somehow, or
does that Herald then have two?  I would assume that neither companion nor
Herald is damaged by that sundering.

In the LHM series, it is mentioned that Jisa would be monarch's own, so her
"Choosing" would not be bonded until Sharvi died and Taver Chose Jisa.  This
doesn't apply all the time.  Keren stated that she thought her grandfather
(the QO Talamir) wanted one of his grandchidlren Heralds to follow in his
place.

I believe that a repudiation between Companion and Chosen, as in the case of
Tylendel, is not a breaking of the bond (which from reading Kethry/Tarma
stories
requires the power of an archpriest) but an act. Had she (the Companion)
survived, both of them would likely be in emotional stress to the point of
breakdown; therefore, a Herald would have to be insane or suicidal to
repudiate
their Companion, or likely they would *become* insane or suicidal. But it
wouldn't be inconceivable.

When I read Black Swan, I thought I was reading a fairy tale.  I think for a
stand alone book for adults/ teens, it was weak. Howevr, think about reading
this book to a young child at bedtime.  In that sense, it was unique among
Misty's books.

 First off welcome back...de lurking a bit here been busy getting
 engaged, going to be married Oct 20 :) and trying to finish up my school
 work for my Masters degree.

 On Brightly Burning: I don't think this needs a spoiler since I'm not
 going to get into any specifics.   I thought it was much more like her
 older books.  The character developement of Lan and the rest could have
 been a bit better but dealing with a single book in a very short amount
 of time didn't allow for as much as a trilogy.  I really liked the story
 and the twists she put in it, its very LHMish in its tone just because
 of how you know its going to end and Lan is very similar to Van in more
 than one way.

 I agree that Black Swan has to be one of Misty's weakest books it just
 didn't get me at all, one of the few books of hers I've read only once.
 I did like the last two Owl books though, they were more lightweight but
 they were fun reads.

I really like the back BB it was every good reading. It didn't loss any of
its hold all the way though the book. Though I wouldn't have mind knowing
about the lifebond that was in the book. Wonder how that could have happpen.
But I was thinking about. Maybe that was the only way his Compaion could
channle his magic?? Anyone have any other thinkings on it?

Um, I beg to differ. Due to the law of independant
assortment, mutations, and all the other good stuff
that goes with genetics, Ma'ar's genes would have been
changed A LOT over the years. Remember, each of his
descendants only gives HALF of his/her genes to
his/her offspring. The other half comes from their
spouse or mate, and a mixture of those would be passed
down to THEIR offspring. So no, they are not one and
the same. They have similarities, but they will almost
definately have differences as well.

I just re-read MP, and as far as I can tell, that
info's right. Exept that Tylendal pulled energy from
Van; I think they said he could do it b/c of their
lifebond. So mages with lifebonds can pull energy not
only from themselves, but from their life-bonds as
well if they have them.

Maybe Firecats and Companions work together, but the
Companions say they know nothing about Iftel, and they
can't lie.  Being sprit creations, they would know at
least something about their god's affairs.
However, didn't Vkandis have a female consort in the
Karsite archives? Could she have created Companions
after she was "lost"? 

Off the subject, Heralds can lie, sort of.  Skif tried
to lie to Elspeth, but his voice was so shaky he
couldn't make her believe him.  This from a kid who
grew up having to lie regularly.  However,  I don't
think he would have lied except he was already being
pretty sneaky, knowing about the Companions' plans for Elspeth.

One of the Fanfiction/shortstories I read in...  Oh shoot, one of Misty's 
books of complied shortstories ~grins sheepishly~  Gave a good explination.  
People are Choosen because they have to gift/want/ability to help their 
country, but can't for one reason or another (shyness, social status, self 
hate, ect.)  And personally I think DW is doing a pretty good job helping 
everybody out w/o a Companion, don't you?  ~g~

Yes, but Karal still "had" a companion.  I got a very strong feeling that he 
would have been choosen by that particular Companion if he had not already 
been choosen by Altra.  Not only that, but the Companion had no other.  She 
died for him, sort of sad, yet there was really no other way around that 
particular conflict.   Anyways...  he _needed_ the Companion to become what 
he was destine to be.  Where as DarkWind, on the other hand, does not need, 
nor ever really needed, a Companion as he was already such a balanced 
person.

Sorry to continue to refute the God stance (As I feel that _is_ a part of it 
as well) but doesn't it imply somewhere in one of the books that practically 
all the Gods in the region are, if not one in the same, at least in 
co-hoots?  Anyways, that's more than my two cents, if anyone cares :)

I remeber this quote!  It was one of those things that just totally blew my 
mind and flipped a little bit of my life over.  I guess I'd never really 
thought about it before, and if I did it was sort of like ~shrug~  what ever 
makes them happy, it's there choice.  But when I read that I was like, "Oh 
my God!  These people must be going through hell!"  And so I now, little 
good as it does, wear the diversity rainbow on my satchel (Believe me, it 
took a lot of courage in my backward little town.  It was amazing how many 
people asked me if I was gay.) and when ever someone comes up to me and says 
something about it (Usally in the form of 'Look, it's the HomoRainbow.  
Which is your color?') I go into a little spill based on ^that^ passage.
