Message-ID: <20000606031530.6248.qmail-+AT+-web3403.mail.yahoo.com> hi everyone -- here are a few things on choosing monarch's owns that i'd like to respond to (snips first, then comments).Mar243-+AT+-aol.com wrote Well isn't that a bit unfair for the Herald or even the Companion as well? Even if the bond is not that strong, you know how horrible it is when a bond like that is broken. it just seems that the Companions should know if that person was going to be chosen for Monarch's Own. They are spirit beings and they do seem to know a lot more then they tell anyone even if they dont know everything. --->first, and i'm surprised that no one else brought this up, who says the bond would be broken? why not transfered? and second, the "choosing" companion may not know any more than the herald being chosen whether said herald would become monarch's own. since the grove born companions (monarch's own and gwenna) seem to have a few more cards up their sleeves than the other companions, i wouldn't be surprised if both companion & herald would be kept in the dark, and wouldn't know until the bond is transfered. in mprice, van remarked to 'fandes that "truth, i almost expected to be chosen as monarch's own" (can't find the exact page #, but text ved is pretty close). this implies that at least some heralds & companions know that the bond btw herald & monarch's own is *slightly* different than a regular one, and that the monarch's own can choose an already chosen herald. Mark Severson wrote You could look upon it as a training period for the Kings/Queens Own to Be (in the case of those who were previously chosen) It is not a job one can just walk into cold off the street. ----> exactly. not all of the bright/fresh trainees wll be able to wade through several feet of the manure called diplomacy and politics without lots of experience. how do you get experience? get a job! in the case of MO, the "less-than-suitable" heralds can be weeded out on circut. maybe you've got someone who's just wonderful solving disputes btw six back-country farmers, but put him with six outraged nobles, and he/she loses his/her mind & temper asap. nothing wrong w/ the herald, just not suited to that type of work. to use an example from corporate america (or europe), you don't take the whiz kid from off the street & make him/her president of microsoft on day 1. the whiz kid needs to learn the ropes. you might notice during the hiring/initial probationary period (6mos-1yr) that the kid sure is sharp, so you start directing the kid, mentoring, etc. maybe, with all of this help, the kid will send bill gates into retirement in 10yrs, but it will be 10yrs of learning the ropes, and very hard work. same principles apply to heralds. you wanna take a bum off the street & have him/her advise the monarch? i don't think so. even if said bum has been chosen, the bum also is utterly unfamiliar w/ the way the royal court works. training is essential. Herald Jacquelle wrote Having the false bond would mean that the Herald in question would be either fully trained or nearly so. That way, they could just step into the office of Monarch's Own without the government being totally disrupted or the Monarch without his/her most trusted Herald.exactly!!! using van as an example (yes, again!) the MO at the time (taver) #1-already had a herald; #2- wouldn't have had time to deal with a seriously injured & suicidal trainee. i'd argue that it took van a few years (say 2-3?) to actually become stable (this doesn't mean that he's worked through everything, just that he's come to a point of doing more than existing day by day) and fairly well trained. i think that he & savil were at k'treva for a few years. so, it took (estimate) 3 years to get this one trainee on his feet -- the most powerful companion (advisor to the monarch) cannot afford to spend that kind of time on unrelated problems to the kingdom. did van become important later? yes. however, the monarch & monarch's own were concerned with "what is important now and in 10-15-25 years, relating to these topics?" this is making taver & elspeth peacemaker sound awfully cold-blooded, and that isn't what i meant. as the ruler & ruler's most trusted advisor, they had to be concerned with the big picture. one damaged trainee does not a big picture make. ***hah!!! found the text ved -- in mpromise, not mprice. ok, so i was off by one book :) p.29 "When Lancir died -- truth, I almost expected Taver to Choose me King's Own." (van to 'fandes) finally, here's a point that i've been wondering about: does simply being chosen make a prince/princess the monarch's heir? what if the absolute baby would be the best monarch? would all of the companions hold off on choosing any sibs until the baby has been chosen, or would all the sibs be chosen at the appropriate age, and the determination would be made at a later date? i guess we haven't seen a scenario like this yet. the twins don't exactly count -- one will be monarch's hier, adn one will be monarch's own, so i guess whomever's chosen first will be the heir (unless talia meets an unfortunate accident, which i doubt). cheers, freddie __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Right. =) I guess the reason I didn't mention that, was that I was primarily concerned with not being able to use NODE magic for gates. =) That's not the only place the books mention being able to use the energies of lifebonded... in one of the Winds series (I believe it was WoC, but not sure, I'm in the middle of rereading them), Falconsbane even ponders on it. As to possible REASONS why one would be unable to cast the gatespell while pulling from nodes, perhaps it takes up too much attention/too much of the channel for that to work properly? Which makes me wonder if perhaps the lifebonded person might not be able to pull from a node, replacing some of the energy... but, well, that's speculation. =) Known to one and all as ShadowDreamer, formerly MorningStar Mindmate to the tawny eagle Ryia! It's a pain having to scroll through pages of stuff you've already read to read a few sentences at the bottom. A good rule of thumb is to make sure that your quoted text is less than your reply. 2) No one-liners, please. They're a pain as well -- I got a message that simply said 'congrats,' and while I send my congrats for both baby and puppies (woo hoo! Kudos and chocolate sheep to you both!! :P) please, if you're going to send them, send them directly to the new 'parents' -- it's not relevant for the rest of us. That, and it's hard on Vanyel the Listserver. 3) Finally -- please BRAID. I hate having three messages from the same person all in one day -- those replies could have been put into the same message and sent out once. Again, it's hard on Vanyel. Ma'ar Urtho and offsring. 1, The mutation that makes the "Magic" gene doesn't only have to have happened once, many mutations happen independently time and time again. British Royal family, Queen Victoria had a mutation on one of her 2 X chromosomes that meant she carried haemophilia (only boys affected), which she then passed on to some of her sons who were affected and her daughters who were carries and passed it round most of the royal families of Europe. Most people with haemophilia are totally unrelated to the British Royal family. But with a lot of genetic diseases like cystic fibrosis theres more than one mutation that can cause it all of which give a slightly different set of symptoms depending on which pair of mutations are inherited (its recessive), so does this mean that different types of mages eg healing mages vs normal mages have different mutations? 2, Trust me we're all related if you go back far enough, think about the ancestral Adam and Eve thing and come to think of it theres more variation with in a community / population than there is between them. Its only the very little things that distinguish a Ma'ar from an Urtho. Mages, can anyone remeber how many different mage schools there are? Genetics: Okay, I was wondering something else about genetics ... can a new trait ever be created, or are all traits somehow part of genetic code and present to a greater or lesser degree? I was wondering about mage gift as a trait ... does everyone have it to a lesser degree? Would an environment where magic was important to survival either create a magical trait or would it just always be there and those with greater degrees of it be more likely to carry on and those with a lesser degree not survive? I was trying to compare it to, say, skin tone. if skin tones over time were (and this is a non-biologist speaking so throw this out if it makes no sense) developed as a response to the environment people lived in, couldn't magic be developed in different ways and to different degrees dependent on the environment people live in? couldn't the magic abilities in SeeJay (sp?) be different than the magic use in valdemar? doesn't the strong presence of mind-magic in valdemar perhaps suggest that this could happen? If that's so, then couldn't someone have magic ability present in them, but perhaps not recognizable to his/her countrymen as it's not the way "they" use magic? 2. OTs: Congrats to everyone who had babies :-) ; and i'm old enough to be a mom to some of you; good bye to the tax zombie (who probably isn't going to read this at this point). 3. Names thing - it would be unrealistic (maybe that's not the best word) to not have names repeat. How many famous Johns are there? or Singhs? or Parks? or ... well, you get the idea. I don't think it's lack of effort per se on ML's part to re-use names - it would make sense in any world that names would be repeated, be popular at times and not at others, and get changed over the years. 4. I have to add my general frustration with one-liners; this is not a chat room. 5. BB SPOILER ... of sorts .... (for those of you who don't choose to read further, here's your sheep shaped toffees now...) Okay, hope that's far enough. While I liked BB, there were elements in there that I didn't like but made the story more effective. I didn't particularly think that Lavan showed much maturing in the book at all - but, in some ways that made what happens at the end all that much more ... well, tragic and poignant come to mind. I didn't quite get the lifebond between a companion and human, although thinking about "souls" bonding (ie tylendel/stefen and van) and not, per se, beings bonding, made it easier to understand. As someone mentioned, for that person it was very important to have that bond. I thought for the type of book it is (more YA than not) it was good; and for the information/insight it gives into Valdemar's past it was invaluable. Lavan reminded me of both Van, and somewhat of Harry Potter. I hope those are enough obmisty's to keep everyone satisfied. I wrote to him and asked him not to send so many one-liners and he either ignored my email or didn't recieve it, but an hour later there were two more posts. I feel that it is excessive and am all with the people reminding, asking, and reminding everyone to please braid! A huge THANK YOU to those of you who do braid! OBMisty: I just got myself a copy of Black Swan the other day and am about halfway through it. I find it an enjoyable book so far. Someone suggested, and I appologize for not noting who it was before I deleted, that it would be a good book to read to children at bedtime. While I do not at all condone censorship, I have to disagree with that idea. It's a bit, well, "adult" in places and not what I recognize as Misty's normal style; I've never read anything of hers that ventures into such sexual territory. It's only a couple places and it's not bad, but I wouldn't read it aloud to a child young enough to want a bedtime story. I can't wait for Burning Brightly to come into paperback here! Is it even in print in paperback yet? If it is, I may have to have the local bookstore order it for me. I can't stand all the spoilers that I can't read yet! *laughs* Many thanks to everyone for putting spoiler space, by the way. I know I'm not the only one who appreciates. Well, that's enough for one post. I'll go back to lurkdom now. Be well, everyone! Heyla I just recieved SIX messages from you in the past 15 minutes. Good lord! Do you not believe in braiding? If you don't understand it, I'll be happy to explain it to you, and if you DO understand it, please use it! It's not that I don't value your comments just as much as anyone else's, but six in one day is a bit excessive. PLEASE braid your posts! None of them were more than a paragraph long, it wouldn't take much to put them together. Braiding is not that difficult and it saves time on both my part and yours, and it keeps the rest of the list from getting angry with you! I thank you in advance. Cotton candy sheep to you, Rhianna Allrighty are all you people happy?????????? I braid and this maybe the last time I do it. The reson I sent out all the post is because I have not been on for afew days and the mail in my box was old and i want to replay to all of it before it disappered from my mail box in about 5 mints, thats one of the resons I did it. The other is because I have a lurning disoder that makes it every hard for me to keep one inde in my head for longer then 5 mints. If did braided them I will have to copy and past everything that iam reading into one mail and will everyone is complaining about that as will. Saying that its to long to read, and the like. So all of you get togeather and deside what you want me to do braid and have long emails that someone is going to complain about or do what I have been doing. And this is allso something to think about before desiding some imed me with this. Jodie8581: i joined it cause i like misty its easier to follow the ideas too if you have only one message And he is right it is much easier to fallow everyones ideas and but them together rather then having one email about thinging that the mailng list has on it. Anyways just let me know and if you want to kick me of for it go right ahead. Message-ID: <9.66bfc92.266f1745-+AT+-aol.com> I'd recommend you just answer one or two of the most intriguing messages. Put your time and efforts into one or two, rather than blasting out eight or nine. Concentrate on those. I personally have very limited time on line right now, and have no time to read a lot of messages by the same person. Spoiler for Brightly Burning 0 0 00 0 0 00 0 0 0 0 00 0 0 0 0 00 I found Misty's latest effort, Brightly Burning, to be less than great in some respects. I felt the refusal of the parents to believe their children about the abuse was excessive. I'm not saying that can't happen -- but if your daughter came home with her face painted green more than once, I think I'd start wondering what was going on. Overall, I don't think this was her best work. I can't help feeling like she's got caught in the "I-hate-my-parents" writing syndrome that makes most adults out to be intolerant, or just plain stupid. And before anyone says anything -- I went through all kinds of hell in school, and my parents didn't always believe me. But I still find Brightly Burning to be hard to swallow whole. Message-ID: If everyone here is complaining about me, I did receive the message from the admin about braiding, and since it didn't seem to ask for a reply, only for me to read and understand it, I did not send a reply to it. I received the message about braiding a good while after I had sent the last message, so if you received more messages, it was mail server delay, not rebellion. Go into full-headers mode in your reader and you'll see where the delay occurred. So, if you're complaining about me, stop. If you're not complaining about me, then please disregard this message. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 06 Jun 2000 22:14:21 -0500 From: Amy Trujillo To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: I am not amused! Message-ID: <393DBE0D.83FE2BB9-+AT+-southwind.net> Heyla listsibs, Shadow, I think you are missing the point that several were trying to make including Yvonne. Braiding does two things: 1. Some people on the list believe it or not DO have to pay for their email it costs them each time someone posts so short multiple posts from one person can be costly to them. Be courteous to your listsibs please. 2. Small multiple posts can be hard on the list server Vanyel, who is a cantankerous old thing at the best of times. Everyone wants the list up and running. I'm not saying that your posts alone would do it but if everyone started multiple small postings Vanyel might up and die and there would be no Misty list till Auntie Mel got it running again. If nothing else braiding and no one liners are the standing rules for the list as stated in the newbie fest and Auntie Mel's rules of thumb. You may not like the idea of braiding but believe me in the long run it works much better. Now having said all this I need to come up with an obMisty: Ok this will start off as a quickie one at least...just how old is Rolan? He wasn't the Monarch's Own Companion in The Last Herald Mage from what I can remember but he is obviously many decades if not centuries old, has Misty given any hints that I missed? He's alive in Brightly Burning and from what I've gathered this was the reign of Roald from the Oath books parents. So that makes it at least a couple of centuries I think by the time of the Owl books. Also Rhianna asked about Brightly Burning coming out in paperback. Unfortunately for those listsibs who can't afford hardback it just came out in that form so it will probably be another year before it makes it to paperback. Also everyone has been focusing on the Velgarth books lately what about the rest We've mentioned Black Swan, which I think is very weak, but I loved the Fire Rose. I also really enjoyed the Di Tregarde books and the one Jenny Talldear book. too bad between the books not selling too well and the idiots trying to harass Misty she decided to stop writing them. I personally loved the Tannim books of the Serrated Edge series. I also enjoyed the Bardic Voices books although I haven't read them in awhile. Hmm think that's all for now, Chocolate cherry cheesecake sheep to everyone, Amy Ferret Friend Lady of All Things Missing, Especially Socks Soon to be english citizen and very happily engaged chickee :) ------------------------------ End of MERCEDES-LACKEY Digest 2318 **********************************
