It seems that the only side to them is the public side. The Herald books seem to expand on their innermost thoughts and feelings, usually between the Companions and themselves. The wordplay between the bondbirds and the Hawkbrothers just does not seem to have the same passion. Maybe it's because the Companions have had past lives to draw on, unlike the bondbirds. I think that is the main problem, not the lack of sex going on.
