Might as well put in my own two cents. On the issue of orientation in relationships: as I only vaguely recall the coversation mentioned, Jaec has probably quoted me more or less accurately, seeing as I don't violently disagree with what I'm reported to have said. However, I recall also making the observation that there are no bi characters in Misty's work. Sherril is the only one I can think of. That absense disturbed me, and I hope it does not mean Misty is of the seemingly-prevailing attitude of "There's no such thing as bi, you're just afraid to admit you're gay." I would be exceedingly disappointed if she were. I love Harry Potter! Cennydd is right, the books are truly magical, far from the mundanities of this world. I am just unhappy that my little sister has the new one, and I have to wait until she comes home in a week before I can read it ; (. I had an interesting discussion with a friend the other day, about how our society doesn't believe in altruism. If someone supports a cause not their own, they are viewed with suspicion, and it is explained as simply a manifestation of their feelings of guilt. No-one seems to believe in the 'S' part of GSA, either - it is said of straight allies that they are closeted gays. (Then again, a good many of these have exchanged their "straight but not narrow" stickers for rainbow ones, but that simply shows how repressed our society is.) This conversation made me think of Heralds, who in many ways define altruism - do you suppose they face the same disbelief and suspicions? I just finished The_Lions_of_Al-Rassan, by Guy Gavriel Kay. I have no words for it, other than it is one of the best things I have ever read. I have read The Fionavar Tapestry and Tigana, previous to this. Part of the blame for this obsession must fall on Cennydd, for speaking so often and in such high praise of these books. I cheerfully blame you for my state this evening of putting a book down at three in the morning with wits severely addled by having my emotions played upon as with a minstrel on a lute. Following that, I can only say: everyone read these books! pecan sheep to all, Ambermoon Singer of Fire Royal Defender of the Brat __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? However, it answers this one as well: "A: Hmm. "loads" of gay characters and not many lesbian...well, there's Van, Stef, and Lendel, and there's Firesong, Moonsong and Starwind. That's six. Lesbian---there's the two Guards that have Van's kid, and Keren, Sherrill and Keren's first partner Ylsa. That's five. (for the record, Amberdrake and Silverfox are bi, as are most kestra'chern). Just offhand, that doesn't seem too terribly uneven to me!" >However, I recall also making the > observation that there are no bi characters in Misty's > work. Sherril is the only one I can think of. Oh well it has been done the can of worms has been opened so to speak. I would just like to say that My mother bought the first three books for my eight year old brother this last Christmas, and I originally dismissed them as being little kid books, myself being 20, I thought they were way to young for me. However, I was helping my little brother read the 2nd book, and I got interested, so I went back and read the first book. WOW. I was sucked. I couldn't wait for the forth book to come out and had it on pre-order from amazon with a free nextday(saturday) delivery. Excellent. I couldn't put it down. I would just like to say that anyone who likes the Misty books should at least read the first potter book. They don't sound like little kid books, you know the see jane run type books. They are actually really well written and engaging. Now I know I shouldn't do this but I really want some feed back on this subject. So if you havn't read the fourth book yet or finished it don't read any further..... s p o i l e r s p a c e Okay in the end of the book when harry and cedric get sucked to voldermort, why does cedric have to die. I really felt that his death was pointless. It was the one part of the book I really didn't get. I know Dumbledore uses it as an example in the end, but it just wasn't that strong of a reason to kill poor cedric. I realize Rolling is probably just trying to show how evil Voldermort is, but it just seemed pointless to me. Anyway, I would appreciate some feed back on the subject. If this is no longer acceptable you can e-mail me privately. Okay that is all for now Oh...wait...has anyone heard anything about owlknight coming out in papper back yet WTTW Jennie ------------------------------ End of MERCEDES-LACKEY Digest 2351 **********************************
