Message-ID: <32515326.963983712308.JavaMail.imail-+AT+-digger.excite.com> Since I see a lot of "non-Misty" books cropping up lately, I'd like to take a quick poll on Andre Norton's Witch World series. I just picked one up at a used bookstore (Warding of Witch World); I haven't gotten very far yet, but what I've read looks extremely similar in some aspects to Misty's writing. Not the style, persay, but some of the elements, the way magic works, even some of the names are similar. Does anyone have an opinion on this series - worth reading or should I go demand my $3.25 back :)? Quickly on Harry Potter - so many people (no few of which are on this list) have recommended the series to me that I finally broke down and bought Harry Potter and the Sorceror's Stone. Finished it in the same day. I see now what the appeal is - they're certainly not complex or deep (unless I'm missing something, which is highly likely), but they're certainly a fun, fast-paced, enjoyable read. The author has a wry, tongue-in-cheek outlook on life that I really enjoy reading. I apologize for the lack of Misty-related stuff in this post; I'll behave next time, I promise :) I haven't offered out sheep for awhile...let's see...how about pink meringue sheep (just because they're pretty). Does anyone have an opinion on >this series - worth reading or should I go demand my $3.25 back :)? Well, my opinion on the matter is that I have read MANY witch world books and liked them, but I liked the later ones better than the earlier ones. I believe Warding of the Witch World is one of the newer ones, but I'd have to check my collection to be sure. My favorite of the series is "Key of the Keplian", for what it's worth... And my own question... I just finished re-reading Owlknight, as I have been ill lately and can't do much BESIDES read. It started me thinking (one of the other activities I can usually handle =) ) about something my husband and I ponder off and on. Which of the abilities/characters/aspects would you bring from the Lackey books into RL? For my part, it would be healing, and for my husband and myself to have mindspeech. I've been looking at becoming a physician for several years now, so naturally the kind of healing done in Misty's work fascinates me. As for other aspects...I think I might bring lifebonding in (although that may be the part of me that's sick of being single talking). Honestly, I think RL could really use an entire system similar to the Heralds just now. I mean, you get the people with noble and honorable qualities in power by default of their Choosing, and I think I'm fairly safe in saying we have a severe shortage of honorable politicians at the moment (no offense meant to any possible politicians on this list). Or Mindspeech! Imagine if you could tell *for certain* if someone was lying and what type of person they were simply by looking at them! I've, in fact, written a story about a world where you can tell what type of person another person is by looking at them. Imagine what it would do for equal oppurtunities! Think about it: Personality Discrimination! Morality Discrimination! Police who would round up all the people contemplating suicide, homicide! Obviously this doesn't happen in Misty's world because there's a code not to go snooping at anyone, but there are surefire ways of getting the unadorned truth and I think that would be extremely useful in today's "lying" society. ~Reanna __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Please help! *L* As a person who's name starts with a 'Y', I have to vote for 'E-Fandes' ... it's the French pronounciation. And believe me, I get it all! 'YUH-vonne,' 'YA-vonne', 'A-von' (which is just WRONG) but IIRC only my Mum calls me 'WHY-vonne,' and that's just to tease me. I was nicknamed 'Why-vone-EE' for a while, but that, too, passed. (Thank God!!) As for Gifts, I'd have to disagree with Reanna about using Mindspeach or Empathy to 'read' and judge everyone that you came across. Not only does that leave yourself as open to judgement, and discrimination, as everyone else around you, but it takes the fun out of getting to know someone intimatly; learning all about their little quirks and flaws that make them unique and interesting. Everyone has flaws to some degree or another, and the problem with a society that judged it's members on some sort of hidden scale by reading their thoughts and emotions is that there would be nothing private; all your innermost thoughts, dreams, emotions, and whatnot would be dragged forward and picked apart and judged by your peers. And not everyone likes you -- lets face it, everyone has met people they can't stand! Those that don't like you could cry 'Personality Problem!' and shut you out of valuable oppertunities before you even had a chance to prove yourself, and prove that you can work beyond differences. I dunno. Maybe I'm just against the idea of 'utopia' ... a place where everything is perfect would have very little to stimulate and challenge the mind. I've often day-dreamed about a Companion coming up as I left my house/school/work and Choosing me and carrying me off to Haven. Healing and Mindspeech would be the two that I'd take, if I could. I believe that everyone's got a bit of Empathy, just we don't know how to control it like the Heralds do. Some people are better at it than others, but hey, isn't that the way everything is? I never thought of that until you mentioned it, but you're right. Misty keeps track of things very well, I think, especially given the number of series that she writes. > 'Nother weird question: Do Valdemarans brush their > teeth? I've always read it to myself as E-fandes, because in RL the names Yvonne and Yvette are always pronounced E-vonne and E-vette. Also, on the Shadow Stalker album, Heather Alexander pronounces it E-fandes. That one's probably correct, since I'm sure Misty screens the albums before they're distributed.
