The first couple Companions were Grove-Born. Isn't it generally agreed that Grove-Born Companions are different from ones that are birthed in a more normal fashion? I don't think they're all reincarnated Heralds. A good number, mayhaps, but not all. For example, Van never was reincarnated. He's a special case, but I imagine the other Heralds got the choice of whether to come back as Companions or not, too. I also agree with you that one example isn't enough to go on, but what about three? Vanyel occasionally saw double images of Yfandes as a white horse and as a woman. My books are lent out or I'd get you all a text evd. I believe Van once got the distinct impression of Gala being a woman inside a horse's body. Florian was seen on the moonpaths as human. I'll grant that having a human image doesn't necessarily mean a human soul, but maybe that's the body that the soul last occupied. I'm not sure I can go along with a human mental image being easier for their Heralds to deal with. After all, the Heralds understand that the Companions are something special, even if they are horse shaped. Anyway, that's enough from me. (: Strawberry sheep! GB Message-ID: <3980AED1.30F81220-+AT+-telusplanet.net> Yes, Vanyel DID see Yfandes as a human woman from time-to-time and he just shook it off as being tired or something. But in 'Winds of Furry' Vanyel said something about Gwena not having human experience because she was Grove-born. But what I don't get about that is how come Grove-born Companions (At least in the cases of Monarch's Own) could give help to thier Chosen in the form of unconscious advice on how to handle problems if they at some time were not something else? And how come having a Grove-born Companion for Elspeth would be an advantage if the Companion had the disadvantage of being young and unknowing? Oh well, that may not make sense to you but I was on a roll. Well, potentially because, although she had no *human* experience, she might have had other powers or insights that only Grove-Born Companions of a specific sort might have. Personally, I think that the Monarch's Own companion differs even from regular Grove-borns in more ways than just longevity, but there must be some similarities. MOC, as we all know, lives forever unless he is violently killed. He Chooses more than one Herald, therefore, and perhaps gains wisdom with each. When he is killed, I wonder what wisdom the new MOC is "born" with...? Perhaps he reincarnates, but I would hope they give him a chance to do something different as well. It can't be easy, living so long and outliving so many dear friends. Grove-borns in general do not live so long, but I think it likely that Gwena has more abilities than your average--if any Companion is average--Companion. Some thoughts are more insight into the repercussions of actions, farther range, more channeling capability, more power in general, (remember how she "shines" to the mage-sight of Quenten, compared to Cymry?) and perhaps even more personality and bossiness than most.
