The void is a power sink. Elspeth observed that the Valdemar Heartstone felt like a miniature sun and because of that mages' hair bleaches. Magic( and so Gates) gives off energy and so bleaching occurs while the void absorbs energy almost killing Falconsbane but not bleaching him. I really hope that makes sense. Wishes of warm sunny days with no work and transportation to the nearest body of water to all my listsibs. Jaec __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I have real difficulty trying to analyse this logically, 'cos it is just a made-up world. Normal rules of physics don't apply, although Misty's done well to try and link things in. I like the books, but from a physics and science point of view, the theory blows :) What I found interesting was the Storm Breaking trilogy collaboration between the Blues (Artificers) and the Mages. In a way, that's a little how I feel trying to think about the use of magic. The Artificers were practical people, dealing in real tangible quantities and actions, where the mages must have seemed almost like dreamers. Although their powers could be used to channel the energies into something that affected the real world, for the most part, the Mage's energy must have been completely invisible and disparate from anything encountered by the average Joe Public. The thought processes outlined by Misty in the books must have been similar to those followed by the great pioneering scientists of our world: Newton, Marie Curie, Niels Bohr, Einstein, Feymann et al. And, by the way, what's with the sheep fetish? ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 10 Aug 2000 16:38:22 -0600 From: Nicole Fletcher To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: A Poem Of Valdemar Message-ID: <39932EDD.EFB1B125-+AT+-telusplanet.net> Please! Don't hang me listsibs! I wrote this poem for a book report on Misty's novels quite a while ago and I HAD to post it. Don't turn me in! I did it in innocence (please believe me!) and I thought you might enjoy it... Well, here goes everything... A Herald brave fights and dies, Flowers bloom where his blood has fell, And in the Grove, Companions all, Gather 'round to toll the Bell. So ends the life of a Herald bold, And that of his Companion true. Now learn the secret of Valdemar: They shall live anew. Now in the darkness of the night, Or the false dawn of the morn, A sword of Light pierces the Dark, A Companion-foal is born. Again I beg of you. Please, please, please don't report me to the All-Mighty Mercedes Lackey's people! Chocolate-icecream sheep to all! I'd say that it was because Skan's feathers could be died or bleached, separate from his skin. IIRC, his eyes nor beak changed color any, but just that which ~could~ change color. If anything, I would imagine that Falconbane's skin would become less colored from the energies that were being drained out of him. WE TELL EVERYONE ABOUT THIS IN THE NEWBIEFEST AND WE'VE MENTIONED IT MANY TIMES ON THE LIST AND IT'S CLEAR THAT YOU KNOW YOU ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO BE DOING IT! This applies to everyone. Absolutely no fan-fic (including songs, poems, or stories) can be posted to this list. If it happens again, I for one, will strongly urge Mel to remove the person from the list permanently. I like this list, and don't want see it be shut down and the list-owner get in trouble because someone thinks that laws don't apply to them.
