YES! By far, this more than makes up for the Owl books. This is right up there with LHM and By the Sword. Most definitely a work of classic Misty. Here I am, an 11 foot ogre-monk and I was in tears at least a dozen times throughout the book. Probably the most excellent read I've had in a long time. Riveting and thought provoking. Even though I knew the outcome at the end (having heard the Firestorm legend in other Velgarth books) I STILL had to read the whole thing... It's been a while since I posted but the discussion on names has caught my interest. before i start letter-serious, i ought to add a little fluff (just for tradition ) *fluff* Things have been interesting lately for me, other than being on summer holidays/vacation/break/whatever, I had my eversoverydearest she'enedra (Brynn aka Jennifer Ireland) to stay with me for 2 and a half weeks! all the way from sunny California she came. just to see me in soggy wet southern england! She left 6 days ago and I haven't had a decent conversation (or one that involves fantasy - which constitutes a decent conversation) since. i am missing her a lot and since she departed from the list (she doesn't check her e-mail often enough) i have little contact. but boy were those 2 weeks fun!!!!!!! PS thanks Liz for the dinner - yummy!! **Serious Fluff** Due to the aforementioned visit I haven't been keeping up with all the newbies. (slap my wrist) but sploosh and mops to all that have joined since the last splooshing. and wet flannels to all oldies that returned. Don't forget to mop up after youselves and DON'T (on pain of torture) leave muddy footprints. the caretaker of the halls is BACK and I don't want you hiding behind me!!!! Okay done now. I am interested in names and name origins so I thought I'd look to see if any of Misty's names were in my book of names. There are some similar names such as the German Albrect (Albert : nobly bright) which might be the grounding for Alberich. And some such as Elspeth (who was an English ruler at some point) which comes from the Scots form of Elizabeth. What I thought was nice was that I found Huldah (similar to the Hulda which was Elspeth's evil nurse) which means Weasel! I also found Roland/Rowland shortened to Rolan which means famed through the land. Another I found was Stephen/Stephan which means crown but also can mean tuneful. I wonder if Misty has a big book of names!! I think she has the only claims to Vanyel, Kethryviss (sp?) and others like those!! I am not going to add my £0.02 to the fan-fic discussion. Just keep it off the list. I think we all would hate this list to be wiped off the universe because of someone carelessly posting an unwanted piece of work. Just don't do it guys. Oh and Cennydd, wonderful flame man!! I didn't know you could shout that loud!! To whoever wrote the poem (i forget who it was), i think you can safely say you are a member of the drifting ashes club now!! And thinking of groups what is the "ABML out-of-practice-musicians band" and how do I become a member?? I have a bassoon somewhere in my bedroom although it may have been covered by clothes/books/dust. Do you need a bassoonist??!!?? And a last thing... i have very nearly finished concocting my own cinnamon and marigold ointment. it smells *very* good! almost good enough so that i purposefully bruise myself just to try it out!! oh well, after next week my poor blistered feet are going to need it... i have to work (stanging up) for almost 30 hour in the next week so i had better get on and finish it!!!! Okay that's far too much for me to write in on go. so i better send it lest i go into another rant! But before i go i'd just like to say thanks to the Gof Od Ptyos (you know who you are) for making me smile. Having said that, there is something to be said for keeping the integrity of ones creation intact, especially in light of that poem. I agree completely, and really, when you consider exactly WHO wrote SWORD OF ICE.....well....... As a writer myself, I wouldn't care, in fact, I would take it as a high form of compliment. HOWEVER, as a writer, I do tend to back other writers wishes. In the end, it really is an individual kinda thing, y'know? A copyright, like a patent, is merely a license to sue those who infringe. I think Misty's .... reluctance...to allow fan-fic (which I believe is within her legal rights, but I'm still not posotive about that) is more cerebral than that. And I can understand her thinking. SHE created these characters and worlds. NOBODY can ever know any of them as well as she does (and I'm about to contradict an earlier post I made, here). If anyone is going to write in her world, or using her characters, SHE should have the final say on what is published. These are her children....I know that feeling...And she wants to protect them. I certainly can't fault her for that, it's one of the reasons I DON'T write fan-fic of any kind....I can never know the characters as well as whoever created them - I would rather learn from the writers, and create my own characters, worlds and plots. Tylendal always sounded like a popular brand of headache remedy to me, and other than that similarity, I cannot find anything else that's similar. Dirk is a scottish and old English (Celtic) term for a dagger. Misty;s pretty good with names. Well, it just so happens that I met up with a favorite artist (although I had NOTHING for him to sign). Who was it? Larry Dixon. AND I didn't even have my camera! Ugh... Anyway, we got to speak for a few minutes (luckily my friend found a topic we could talk about...I was gobsmacked about MEETING him), and he's a really sweet guy. Misty couldn't go. I got the impression that Gwena was the perfect Companion for the first Herald Mage since Vanyel's time. Gwena was immature, yes (quoting Rolan, here) but I think she suited Elspeth just fine.
