It appears as a Dutch name too, for example we have a soccer player with Ulrich as first name. Come to think of it, lots of topographical names in Karse (not any other characters' names, AFAIK - I've read ML's books chronologically until Storm Breaking, which I'm reading now) have a German sound to them - couldn't give you an example right now, though. The same topic came up recently on the alt.books.m-lackey Usenet group (ABML for those of us who hang out there). I think the same conclusion was drawn. Unless otherwise indicated, I think we should respect Misty's wishes and refrain from any fan-related creations. Now, drawings of Gryphons, bird-people, lizard-men, etc, etc, don't have to be Misty related. Those creatures I've seen all over the place in a number of fantasy art books as well as referenced in other non-Misty books. I think you can safely draw what you want as long as you don't make any allusions that it is Misty related. Well, you could always start with what got me hooked: The Mage Wars. AKA the Gryphon trilogy. I'll admit that Silver Gryphon wasn't as good as the first two, but Black Gryphon and White Gryphon are great books and give you that pre-knowledge that his helpful for a LOT of other things. However, most people recommend reading in publication order which, I believe, starts with the Queen's Own trilogy (Arrows, etc). Somewhere around here I think someone has the full list. These are four different series (SG is stand alone). All are set in modern day, but deal with fantasy/occult subjects and are great reads. For sci-fi, Wing Commander. I would suggest Sacred Ground or Children of the Night to start with. She isn't very nice to her men though, so there are mostly female heroines. I can only hope that everything turns out well for all of you - you certainly are in many of our thoughts. as to a book ... well, what is Freedom's favorite? Is she up for listening to you read out loud? It might be nice to read a book to her as you explore it for the first time .. just an idea. and related to this heartwrenching situation ... here's an obmisty: Motherhood (can't imagine why I'm thinking of that) ... I can't think of an active mom in a Misty book (kethry doesn't count because she wasn't an active mom in any book) . Selaney isn't portrayed as a mom per se but as a ruler (okay, a little mom in there) ... I guess Hydona is protrayed as well as a mom, but while she isn't a bit part, she's really a supporting role ... but motherhood just isn't portrayed that much in Misty's books that I remember .. am I misremembering? Can moms be integral central characters? betha'lis - showering healing sheep on everyone who needs them ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 29 Aug 2000 23:41:45 +0100 From: "Dan Halford" To: Subject: Re: Real Places Message-ID: <001b01c0120a$663adb00$0100a8c0-+AT+-dan> > I have also noticed that many of the places that she describes in Oklahoma > and in California in the SERRA books and the Kory books and in Sacred Ground > are identifiable. The freakiest thing ever (you know, hairs on the back of your neck standing up) was reading a book by Bill Bryson, a travel writer / comedian, who described where he lived in upstate Vermont just over the state border from NH. He described a tin-pot little place called Norwich and the bridge over the river which marks the State border thereabouts. Now, I cannot imagine that many people unless they're from round there have even heard of Norwich. I'm English, and I wondered how many people from this country would have heard of it, and would have actually swum under the bridge he was talking about. Very freaky experience. It's like going to somewhere for the first time (like NYC or LA) and then being able to relate to things when you see it in a film. ------------------------------ End of MERCEDES-LACKEY Digest 2388 **********************************
