You're on to something here - very little in mother - daughter relationships. Only daughter-parent thing I can see is Natoli and her Herald dad. (brain fart here.) Come to think, there are very few "moms" featured as main characters anywhere in any of her books. Wonder if thats a subject for Misty and her shrink. -Susan ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 30 Aug 2000 21:44:23 EDT From: Eeyore9051-+AT+-aol.com To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: mothers Message-ID: Truthfully I've always found Talia and Tarma the most motherly figures. Tarma adopted all of the children of other mercenaries as well as all of her students. Talia at the age of 13 or so adopted Elspeth. Elsepth herself says that she always thought of Talia of more than a mom then Seleny (sp) in the Winds Triolgy. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 31 Aug 2000 13:11:47 +0000 From: "Runewind" To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: mothers Message-ID: You have Winterhart and Zhaneel as mothers in The White Gryphon and The Silver Gryphon. And there was a healthy mother-daughter relationship in Sacred Ground. It's too bad this area hasn't been developed more. I think it would provide greater depth to her stories. Message-ID: <20000831202603.22823.qmail-+AT+-web1604.mail.yahoo.com> Heyla list-sibs! Remember me? Songjewel? I have a new addy I'll be subscribing with shortly. It's been at least a month since my last post, because of moving into school and everything. Before anyone says anything, no, I'm not in college, it's a boarding school for 11th and 12th grade. I don't even remember the last conversations I read. So TECHNICALLY, I haven't been lurking, right?? I just haven't been reading the mail...^^; Anyway, I have some stuff to say and I hope I'll be able to keep up more now that I'm all established. (Long weekend this weekend! Yay!) First: All hope goes out to Lady Freedom Justice Walker and her baby; Get well! Next: >>Leon writes: Ulrich is a common German name, I think. It appears as a Dutch name too, for example we have a soccer player with Ulrich as first name. Come to think of it, lots of topographical names in Karse (not any other characters' names, AFAIK - I've read ML's books chronologically until Storm Breaking, which I'm reading now) have a German sound to them - couldn't give you an example right now, though. << He he...My new room mate's last name is Ulrich! My first thoughts were "Wow, I have a Karsite room mate!!" Of course, she's NOT from Karse, but it's still pretty cool. And... On the Moms thing: OWL AND BURNING SPOILERS!!!!!! I think that besides Lady Treesa (Van's Mom), the latest books that she's written have been slowly incorporating them. Look at the Owl books; Darien's Mom is a vivid part of his memory, and when he finds her and his dad, it's mostly her that is written about (conversations and stuff). Also, Lan's mother was active with him, she took care of him when he was sick from his burning headaches, went to see him in Healer's, etc. END SPOILERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! In the Tayledras clans, Firefrost is the only old woman that stuck out, but there weren't all that many YOUNG women, either. Dawnfire, and maybe some in the Owl books...can't think of any other names right now. It seems like the Hawkbrothers are mostly male characters in the books. There haven't really been any main female Tayledras characters. Now the kal'edain (I have NO idea how to spell that. I'll find out later.) On the other hand had many female characters. Winterhart, Zhaneel, That Healer I can't remember, Blade, Nightwind, etc. We always seem to leave out that trilogy in our discussions, so I thought I'd bring it up. Winterhart, for example was an active mother. She fussed about Blade a lot! ~Nuri-chan a.k.a.
