I've been on this list for awhile... maybe a couple of months... but I've been hiding in lurker-dom for awhile. ;) So without further ado, here goes... (I'll add a little spoiler space for kicks...) >Fathers: >Blood fathers? I think the one that comes to mind is from a short >story >about Tarma and Kethry...(Trying to remember the name of the >guy) -- a >follower of the wheel who had to care for his children. He >seemed like a >sympathetic character. Oh yeah... wasn't that the one where Tarma and Keth saved the chambermaid? And the father tried to proposition Keth, right? That's a good example of a father - although I didn't really like how Misty put in a little bit about how the father and the chambermaid were getting along in the romance way. But he was very caring torwards his children - and tried to (like in real life) balance his work (farming) with caring for his children. Also, like Amy said, Jadrek. He was a good father in the story "Oathblood", and although he didn't show up much, his general kindness and understanding (from Oathbreakers) would most certainly have spread to his children. :) Altogether, I rather like the pairing of Kethry and Jadrek, BTW. Ahh, I'm off to finish my work now! :) Zhai'helleva, ~*~ Vicky _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. However, the answer to this question of magic is that the books are inconsistent. In Winds_of_Fate, Elspeth is able to sense and draw upon ley-lines and nodes with no training whatsoever. This is also true of Vanyel. As Amy noted, the same is not true of Kethry. This is simply another facet of a previously seen and stated phenomenon: the facts about magic don't add up. Welcome back, Lightsong! I also had a hiatus from the list; it's nice to see familiar faces (so to speak). And on another note, Happy Birthday to me. I'm 18 today. tiramisu sheep to all, Ambermoon Singer of Fire Royal Defender of the Brat __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! This is also true of Vanyel. <> mmmmmm...I'm think Elspeth only managed it through Need's expertise to begin with though. I haven't read the Winds books in a while, but my understanding was that initially Elspeth released control to Need, and therefore was able to draw from the nodes completely untrained. Vanyel however was blasted open at full power. If I understand the gifts right, they usually come to full power at a slower pace. Various references are made in the Arrows tril, regarding some of Elspeths gifts coming on early, and getting stronger over time. She stares at the beauty that symbolizes the friendship of everyone who either has or will touch it and blinks rapidly. Moving her eyes from the ring to the Lady who gave it to her, she gives Betha'lis a quick hug. "Betha'lis, thank you. I'm deeply touched." She smiles brightly and moves her eyes back to the intricately braided ring on her finger. **/fluff** Obmisty: For the fathers conversation, what about Lord Withen? He wasn't the best father in the world at the beginning of the series, but towards the end Van and he had learned to at least get along well enough for holidays. Actually, I believe Van himself would have made a rather good father if he'd had a chance, ie not having to be in the field constantly. He doted on Jisa whenever he was at Haven and she adored him. Even Yfandes thought he'd make a good father, I believe. She said he'd make a good papa, but he argued on grounds I can't remember. I don't have my books with me or I'd look it up.. Anyway, I babble.. (: You all take care! Betha'lis, thank you again!
