Just so you know, it was more than a year ago becuase I remeber it from about three years ago when I was on the list then( I just re-signed up aboout a month ago) On the subject of list topics a long time ago, does anyone remember when you could get a bond bird? Anywho, OB Misty, I have been reading Brightly Burning, becuase everyone seemed to have read it but me and I felt a little out of the loop, and it is REALLY good. Why couln't a soul start the cycle as a Companion rather than a Herald? The same qualities are needed. Memories (very sorry, no snip) Why don't reborn souls retain their memories? (or something like that) Heralds don't, probably because humans are inclined to talk. Wouldn't want the mystery revealed. Companions seem to retain their memories, evidenced by Yfandes' "You humans..." It was a little slow in the beginning but it got better towards the end. Not quite up to my high Misty standards but worth the read all the same. It is a little predictable but once you get past that, it is pretty good. I have a question about this A student going through the collegium thing. Isn't that what Arrows of the Queen was. Okay, sure it was a special case student (being the monarch's own and all) but wouldn't it really be basically the same thing stretched out? Personally I think that a book from a companions point of view would be interesting. Message-ID: Heyla. I just joined the list. I fit all of the HOW DO YOU KNOW.... REQUIREMENTS. LOL. I don't know if this has already been said, but if you go to baen's website, you can read the first three chapters of Misty's new Eric Banyon book that is coming out in March. Here is the link. http://www.baen.com/chapters/W200010/0671319558.htm?blurb Also, I am dying to know when another Velgarth book might be coming out. I wrote to the Ask Misty column at Firebird but haven't heard anything. Does anyone know? I just had to tape the covers back on the rest of my books for the third time because they have been read so many times. He said his bond to his COmpanion was more of like a beloved teacher, not a bonding of equals. I think the normal cmpanion bond ties the as if they were family. A life bond goes even beyond that. A mage can feed energy for a gate from a lifebond but not his Companion bond which shows that they are at different levels entirely. That's why it was neccesary for Kalira to lifebond to Lavan, she wouldn't have been able to control his Gift otherwise. Well, my thought would be that a lifebond is a bond between souls that is permanent. For every incarnation after this one, and in the afterlife, whatever it may be, those two souls are bonded together. And if you work on the theory that each soul has one perfect mate, then the lifebond between Kalira and Lavan would (as shown in the book) prevent Lavan from ever looking for companionship elsewhere. Presumably in the next life, or maybe the last one they were together in a more normal manner. My question though is just how strong is a _regular_ Companion-Herald bond? When Tylendel lost his Companion he killed himself, though could that perhaps be chalked up to his already immensely unstable state? I believe there is a reference elsewhere, though, to the fact that Companions and Heralds rarely outlive each other, because they tend to pine away without the other. But then, I guess in cases like Rolan it must be different, because Rolan hangs around for the next MO. If I was the MO I'd be kind of bummed. I mean, Van (and presumably other Heralds, though probably in Heaven/The Waiting Place, instead of as ghosts) got to hang around with Yfandes in the afterlife, but this obviously can't happen for the MO. So are Comanions and Heralds just really good friends with some sort of bond that allows energy transferance and communication? Or is there something akin to a soulbond in there? Maybe a sort of weaker version of the lifebond? And another thought... Van presumably had to wait around 18 odd years for Tylendel's spirit to be reborn into Stefan's body and mature to an (almost ;) ) appropriate age. But in AotQ there was that event (Sorry, but I've forgotten names, and don't have my whole Misty library with me at school) where one half of a lifebond died, and then the other half was saved by a new lifebond. Are all three meant to be together? It would seem to me that if lifebonds continue on into the next life, it would be really confusing (though incredibly fortunate) for someone to have two possible perfect mates... Though I suppose thats cheering, since it means we all have more than one shot. :) Just my ramblings, though I'd love to hear others thoughts...
