Perhaps you havn't met this circumlocution before but I've always read "gone" in that line as *dead*. As in "GONE to meet his Maker" or "Not lost but GONE before." I've never read it as physically gone, vanished, etc just that the companion died at the same time. The "also" in that sentence is probably key, as in the Companion, like Jadus, was ALSO "gone." Since no one has ever implied that *Heralds* just fade away and disappear, that probably implies that the Companion died just like Jadus, corpse and all. Windrider is a symbol.  It's the winged horese on Valdemars crest.  It's like
