I think there's also a memorial stone next to the death bell on which the names of Heralds killed in action are inscribed. I seem to remember a comment in the description of Beltren's memorial service and the stone saying basically that one of the reasons the Collegium did this kind of ceremony, and put the names on the stone, was that usually Heralds died in action far away from Haven, so that there wasn't a body to mourn over. The implication being, I think, that if the body was there, the Heralds would be able to perform the usual rites, whatever they are. I don't recall any mention of a "joint" memorial service for a Herald and Companion. AotQ describes three or four different services for Heralds killed in action: presumably at least one Companion was killed at the same time, if not all of them, but I don't recall the Companion being mentioned, and I don't recall any ceremonies for a Companion alone. Perhaps the Companions have their own ceremonies which we just haven't seen yet. I mean, the Companions know each other as friends and colleagues, in a way that the Heralds don't (know the other Companions, that is). So it would make some sense for the Companions to do something on their own to grieve for the individual deceased Companion. At the begginning all of the Companions were grove born, not just the MOC right. Okay, so one assumes that not all of these guys had usuallay long life times because new Companions were born and we haven't heard about any "Great COmpanion overflow" due to companions that didn't die when there Heralds did. Is this making sense. In other words. Gwena isn't the only Grove Born Companion who wasn't MOC. She is just the first one in a really long time. One assumes that Gwena would suffer as any Companion would, except the MOC of course, when Elspeth dies. That might be a good one to do. -Suzi ------------------------------ End of MERCEDES-LACKEY Digest 2446 **********************************
