I don't think that Misty meant that female Companions are in heat constantly, but rather that they engage in sex, even when they aren't likely to conceive. Just like humans, in other words. And presumably, they are intelligent enough to exercise some control over their reproductive purposes (who knows, maybe there's a secret patch of contraceptive herbs somewhere in the Companions' Field). And as far as when and why they choose: they are 12 years old and they do it because the little pixies that live in the Grove tell them to. *giggle* Seriously, I don't think that there is any hint as to the age of the average Companion at time of Choosing or the reasons why a Companion chooses. Hey, perhaps that explains why there aren't lots of little Companions. We know that they are ensouled with the reincarnated souls of various Heralds. Maybe their population is limited to the number of souls the Powers That Be choose to send down to the world. And perhaps, when the souls *are* sent, they are also tagged with a knowledge of who and when they will Choose? It's as plausible as anything else. Message-ID: <004c01c04d3a$3c0b7680$b1c6e4d8-+AT+-eonet.com> Please no splooshing, I've got a sore throat as it is. Don't know what's going on here in the states school wise, it's been about 27 years since I last darkened anyone's "hallowed halls". I don't know if it will help (or hurt) but I use to post using my regular moniker of Mark Severson, I just decided a while back to use the nick name I gave myself in my email finally, hence mark the tax zombie. Seeing as tax season is fast approaching it is becoming truer by the day. Rain wise, very little here. I'm in a "desert" region, 10 inches in a year is a wet year. During the fall/winter we hardly even get any snow to speak of, just cold. Concerning you OBMisty I think your correct in that the mares do keep track of when it's safe or not but I recall in the Queen's Own series (IIRC) where Rolan was extremely fertile and a certain former thief's Companion forgot that when she decided to have some fun. She ended up with an unexpected foal so Companions can goof in that matter. On the number of Heralds question. If I recall properly from my reading the number of Heralds depends on the needs of the country. The companions I believe have some kind of foresight so when they know Valdemar will be in danger more foals are born. Also when ever this happens it is a warning the people that trouble lies in the near future. I think this was from the Queens Own series too. I have to reread my books again. Well I think I'll stop now and go find some OJ. take care all. mttz ----- Original Message ----- From: "Sarah Ardern" To: Sent: Sunday, November 12, 2000 2:23 PM Subject: Re: Hello - is anyone here?? > Heyla all... and welcome back to Mark (the tax zombie) (should I sploosh > you? have you been away long enough to deserve the Enchanted Bucket #2TM?) the list has slowed down recently... is it finals time over in the states? i seem to remember that it was around this time... it's mock GCSE time over here in sunny ole England (ironic j/k to all the ppl living here... hope the floods haven't hit y'all too bad... i seem to have missed the most of it although my school was shut last week...) and i should have my head stuck in a book or in my room learning french verbs... je suis, tu es, il est, elle est... but i'm not. so there.# > > > Now I'm starting to wonder if I didn't walk into an abandoned hall. nah... just everyone's doing a whole lot of lurking and no-one wants to come out. or maybe everyone's asleep... that wouldn't surprise me. no friendship ring, > > that's a good point... who's got the ring at the moment? it got lost a few > weeks back. admit it... who put a stack of revision papers on top of it?? > > > I was wondering if the books after Owlflight were any better. > i quite liked Brightly Burning but i didn't think that it was up to the > standard of the older ones... which is the next one due out? didn't i hear > a rumo(u)r that it was an *adult* one about life at the collegeum? that'd > be a good read i hope. i can't say i like the young adult ones as much as i do the others... but then which ones actually class as adult? or young > adult? owls were YA weren't they? but then i'm 15... no, that's wrong i'm > 16 now (as of 11/11) so what do i know :) > > and my main OBMisty > > if the companions are continually in season (as we are told in arrows and > others), why don't we hear about more foals... foalings must occur quite > often or "foal watch" wouldn't be a duty for the greys... and why aren't > more chosen new Heralds chosen? is it just that they are only chosen if > they have a specific gift that the country needs (I think there is textevd > in a LHM book [or some other] that there were X new trainees just in and X Heralds going out on patrol) do they just hang around the companion's field until they *need* to go and find someone or what? In the first book, they spent too much time making Errold's Grove believe Darian was a lazy bum, so it seemed very out of character for him to suddenly be so useful to the Hawkbrothers. The "change" in perception seemed very hard for me to swallow, but the second book seems more natural, especially Keisha's story so far. Also, I think you really had to accept that Justyn was told to expect ingratitude so that's what he got and that colored Darian's attitude about the whole thing.
