BB is the later and better of the 2 and is heading back to the old standard, guess I felt it needed to be two books or shorter, it was maybe 100 pages longer than a one book story should have been. Having said that I do reread it so.. I'm looking forward to the new series but 7 books on going through the collegium, bit of a slow student? ---------------------- Liz Hoffman E.G.Hoffman-+AT+-soton.ac.uk ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 24 Nov 2000 11:20:13 -0800 From: "Lorna Appleby" To: Subject: Misty's Books (May contain minor spoilers) Message-ID: <060201c0564b$91e14750$f240a8c0-+AT+-backtalk.org> >I know there's been some discussion about misty's newer works being... well, >not as good as the old stuff. I was wondering if Brightly Burning was worth >reading. Okay -- I'll be the first one to say that the Owl series kind of meanders and never really makes much of a point and really isn't up to Misty's usual snuff.. but I really don't see the complaint about all her other books. The only book of her's I *didn't* enjoy was Firebird, and that's because the story was an almost exact retelling of a plotline she'd already used in her Bard's Tale series. (Castle Of Illusion? Deception? Something like that) ..Add to that the fact the story wanders about and never really gets anywhere beyond a sluggish crawl with all the unnecessary description.. Well, anyway. I started reading Misty with Arrow's Flight (and discovered "There's a book before this? -+AT+-#$%!! Where am I going to find it?!") and have all her books except the Darkover and Wing Commander books. (Not so impressive -- I have *all* of Anne McCaffrey's books. ^_^ ) .. And as a long time fan I would have to say that Misty's writing style has been growing and evolving and developing steadily since Arrows. But what does that say for her newer writing? Having just spent the last several days going through the last several of her series'.. She seems to be trying to force the story in the Owl series and even in the second two books in the Grypon trilogy. Before, it was like conversation was the skeletal structure, then events and then description.. now it almost seems description, conversation and then events stuck into a low third. Which means, there seems to be a lot of pretty words, a lot of talking, but not much going on. (Sounds kind of like a few political parties. ^_^ ) .. But she's been writing for *how* long? She's been writing Valdemar for how many years? Wouldn't you get a little sick of it all eventually and what to start a new slate with a whole new set of characters? Which brings us to Brightly Burning.. I quite enjoyed it. In fact, once I'd finished it, I went right back to the beginning and re-read it. It's a *vast* improvement on the Owl series. Although, as we all know, there's no happy ending. :( I'm almost looking forward to her book about the history of Skif.. although.. I really wanna know what's up with Hardon and the Empire and.. and.. and.. ^_^ -Lorna (Mistress of saying almost nothing in as many words as possible) -------------------------------------------------------------------------- I'm selfish. Second, I don't know the paperback release date yet. I would say either wait for the paperback, or find some way to read it in hardcover (some libraries may carry it; I've used sneakier, although legal, ways of reading hardcovers that had just come out... lol). This is a one-shot story, however. It covers the legend of Lavan Firestorm, who we're first introduced to during a history class in "Arrows of the Queen". I think it is a good read, but I'm not going to buy it until it's in paperback (those sneakier methods? I used it to read the book... still, fully legal...). ===== ---<---<---<----+AT+- Li'nia Stormdancer -+AT+---->--->--->--- Peon to the Powers That Be, Goddess of All Things Possessed, & Caretaker of the Arena of Discussion and Dissention __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? "Set on the California coast, this series by Mercedes Lackey & Ellen Guon combines wandering street musicians, good elves addicted to Coca-Cola, bad elves who are corporate raiders, and humans in a fight to save the magic that lives in Hollywood. A wonderful mix of fun and adventure! The Bedlam Bards novels are set in the same universe as the SERRAted Edge series."
