It's so nice to come in from the cold and wet, and be made to feel so welcome, so immediately. Okay. Must not fumble friendship ring responsibility. >******** >Layla wrote: > > > ... something I'd like to see: a happy couple early in their > > relationship, discovering that they're going to have a child... > >******* >I agree; the fears, concerns, impact, strains on the relationship, etc., >while not a major plot, could add dimensions to any characters involved in >the main plot. Exactly. Perfectly normal people get very protective of pregnant women (for good reasons, of course). It strikes me that Talia's pregnancy had the potential to be quite worrisome for a great many people: she's small, and there might be any number of potential health risks (especially after having been tortured and all), but, at the same time, she's certainly not someone who would cut back on her responsibilities "just" because she was pregnant. I'm not really sure of the timing, but are Jemmie and the twins approximately the same age? Were Talia and Selanay pregnant at the same time? Do you think they breast fed at Council meetings? >And those first three months afterwards - forget about sleep!!! A short >story about a herald dealing with someone who has psychosis (sp?) from >sleep deprivation from a baby could be both humorous and realistic... Yes, indeed. The mind boggles. And the addition of a child into any relationship, added to the stress and sleep deprivation of those first few months, adds a lot of extra dimensions to any character. Even if it's not the focus of the main plot. And parenthood has a way of really changing people, especially people who are fundamentally decent but a bit self-centered and self-absorbed. Like Kris, for instance, although, obviously (sadly) that won't happen. Or, now that I think about it, like Daren. I like both of them quite a bit, but they're both a bit self-centered. Which, to get back to the original post (now lost in the mists of time and my foggy memory), means that I think it's too bad that we don't see much of Daren, since he's been duly paired off now. (My apologies if he shows up in Storms or something else I haven't read.) Because it seems as if we see a lot of him as a teenager with Kerowyn, and a bit more as a young man and his brother's Lord Martial, and he's a nice, decent guy then, but I bet Daren, the guy who is Selanay's lifebonded partner, king of Valdemar, and the father of two kids, is probably a more mature, interesting person now. Anyway, that's my rambling for the day! Off now to watch my new favorite show, "Sheep in the Big City"! It happens (usually) at the END of the trilogy!!!! and as the main of each tril is NOT the main of another you don't see much about them. (BTW.. with Eric/Kory/Beht you DID see their realtionship in the second book (summoned to tourney)... and reading rosemary edgehill's page, there might be a 4th eric book called white lightings or something similar coming out.......) *drags self back on track* however - I've noticed that authors are mixed in portrying realtinships - Tanya Huff (at least in her "Quarter" series) doesn't usally show realtionships, but Marion Zimmer Bradley did (at least in some) and Piers Anothy does - but not for the 1st year after charaters marry *s* btw - another thing i find intresting is how some Australia authors (which I have been reading for years) are being relased in the USA and American as 'new' authors - i find this extremely funny *s* go to go now and do some *shudder* work *slips back into the misty halls of property contracts* Lisa T _____________________________________________________________________________________ Get more from the Web. I was very surprised to see that Rolan was alive back then, too. It brings to mind a few "musings" of my own. One, since he's been alive for so long, how is it that he seemed so naive when it came to Elspeth and the Great Plan that he and the other Companions cooked up for her. IIRC, Vanyel comments with disgust on the Companions' "plan" when he first meets Elspeth and Gwena in Sorrows. He chalks up Gwena's participation to her youth, but one would think that after three hundred years, Rolan would be a little wiser. (well, it's been a LONG while since I've read those books...I may be misinterpreting that scene/comment) And, two, I kinda feel sorry for Talia (and every other MO who's had Rolan). I remember how Kris said he wasn't afraid to die, b/c he knew that Tantris was waiting for him. Unless Rolan gets killed in battle or something, Talia won't have him waiting for her---and she has SUCH a strong bond with him! Also, could someone refresh my memory? At what point did Heralds start "forgetting" about magic? Was it right after Vanyel's death? WTTW!! No, it's after Stef died and went to join him.

IT was Stefs lifes work and part of the results of this was to make people forget about magic so that they wouldn't think that it was necessary for solving all their problems.
