Cats. They would be cats. Because Cats go everywhere, get into everything
and.. Well, okay maybe not. I've probably read Tanya Huff's "Summon the
Keeper" once too often..
The major problem is ; there's not a whole lot of animals that can go pretty
much anywhere in our city-society. If they were known and accepted, I think
they would probably be something along the lines of German Shepherds.. a
decent sized police dog animal but without the massive size of hunting
hounds or Newfoundlander types. (My dog breed classification vocabulary has
leaked out my ears..) Or maybe their own type of dog.
I can't really remember what breeds of Horses Misty has compared Companions
to..

Heyla all!
***FLUFF WARNING***
::Cariad steps into the Hall of Mist, holding several warm sheep shaped towels for Doreen and any other newbies:: Here you go! They're warm, I just got them from the dryer at the mystical laundromat...::
On 'The Black Swan':
I liked it, although it was one of those things that after reading once, I have no desire to re-read. There was a short story in an anthology -- I think it was called 'Flights of Fantasy' -- that had one of the 'extra princesses' as the main character that was *really* good. Better than the novel it was based on, in my opinion. :)
On Disinterests:
I never really got into 'Firebird' -- it might have been the Russian theme that turned me off, I've never really been interested in Russian anything. And I've never managed to read the 'Storms' trilogy, even though I own all three books, I've never read them. I don't really know why. :) Just 'cause I'm a dork, I suppose.
On favorite scenes (re-reading of):
I do this *all* the time! It's a comforting thing for me. Glad I'm not the only one. :)
On Companions (modern):
Hmm, this is an interesting question. Having a horse around you wherever you go wouldn't really be unobtrusive in today's world, would it? I think a small dog would be a practical modern companion.
And Happy New Year, all!
Wind to thy wings,
Cariad

Heyla List-Sibs!!!
*Li'nia walks through the Arena of Discussion and
Dissention (which seems pretty empty of late! lol) and
heads into the Hall of Mists. She spots Cariad
handing towels out to the recently splashed newbies,
and heads over towards her. Styx gets there ahead of
her, and begins to twine himself around Cariad's legs
to catch her attention for his bonded. Li'nia stops
just in front of Cariad, and holds out her hand with a
smile. In her palm is nestled a ring, gleaming in the
light filtering into the Hall; the gold, silver, and
copper created an almost warm glow around it. Li'nia
clears her throat a little, then begins to speak...*
"It's time for me to pass this on... I was given it
almost a week ago, and have been honored to wear it.
I pass it to you, Cariad, for the kindness and
friendship you've shown the others in here, both new
and old. Wear it, my friend, you've earned it..."

Renee peeks out between the columns still bearing soot behind her ears from
the burning she got for not snipping last time.....She straightens her
shoulders, steps with false bravado to the center of the hall, closes her
eyes and speaks........
I think that companions would be pugs. They are allowed everywhere because
they are soo cute. Any other dog frightens someone, but pugs are just
completely nonthreatening. Also, they are small and easy to overlook and so
can spy on conversations. They could even in a pinch be stuffed into a
duffel bag and smuggled somewhere that dogs aren't allowed.

I don't recall her ever comparing them to any, but
I've always thought Arab to Thoroughbred. They just
have that fine-bred touch about them.

While is intresting to speculate what animals would be small/cute/common enough to go places there was three reasons why companions became horse in Srising they say that is was because (a) horses were common and (b) they are good at attacking the enemy/defending their choseen and (c) fro transport. (a) is no longer applicable, and there are many ways to travel therefoe (c) is no longer applicable. However what ever fore the companions choose it would still have to defned itself.
Also remeber the firecats... they fool with ppls minds to think that they are a small house pet. so maybe they could be whatever form - but pople think that they are what they expect to see :)
that's all

Starshadow steps up on her soapbox preparing to shock and amaze all who hear

Lightsong rolling over laughing in the corner. Well, fine then she'enedra,
I will just peresent my opinion in the nice humble version I have prepared.
As far as the subject of Modern day Companions I think that they would still
be horses for a couple of reasons. First, you have to keep in mind that
whatever world the companions are in, they would be known. It isn't like
people would be like "What is a horse doing here?" People would know about
the Companions. They could still be used for transportation because there
are many places that a horse could go that would be impossible for a car to
go. For example, Into a wooded area or a place with no, or very bad roads.
Maybe this is just my small town ways, but I still see people riding horses
often enough. One ,ust also keep in mind that Companions are really
affective defenders in there current form. One has to wonder if any other
plausible form would work as well.
Just my 2¢ worth

I always thought of them something like lippizaners or the fine Spanish
andalusians. they certainly do the dressage training in the herald training
process.
The one misty novel I couldn't get into was if I pay thee not in gold. It
just kills me to try to get through it. I did, but by act of will only. I
have discussed my feelings about this novel other times in this listserve.
the warring literary styles, just don't mesh. loved all the others....

You mean if they weren't needed for riding? They
would have to be small enough to get into a vehicle
and big enough to be a help fighting & such... Or >>
I would picture a herding dog of some such. Of course I own some so I am
partial, but they ARE incredibly intelligent, loyal and protective.
Either a German Shepherd type or a collie type. Maybe one of the more
obscure mountain types.
