It's not as if we're talking about introducing something like the Companions into our world; they would already be an established entity here. Now, if we're talking about establishing them here, that's a problem. We'd have to take in mind all the established areas that certain animals could not go into. In our modern world, a horse really wouldn't be a practical shape to take. The Companions would have to take something like a cat or dog... Personally, I would prefer (as if this could ever happen! lol) that they took the shape of a cat. The FireCats, IIRC, encouraged people to look at them as common housecats. Unless, of course, they WANTED to be seen as a FireCat... But, that's just my two cents... ===== ---<---<---<----+AT+- Li'nia Stormdancer -+AT+---->--->--->--- Peon to the Powers That Be, Goddess of All Things Possessed, & Caretaker of the Arena of Discussion and Dissention __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? (okay this is stretching it...) ... it could be imbued in such a way that it could hear, it could animate itself to walk (via fingers?) back to you, it could add something to your hand when you wear it .. or how about the "spirit" of a companion not in a physical entity at all (like a ghost that can manifest itself as solid when need be?) then you wouldn't have any problems with it being seen, not being allowed certain places, and if it can become solid (isn't there some name for this ability) then it could transform into the shape (perhaps still transparent .. imagine riding on a transparent horse) you needed at the time. Oooh, I like it. The main problem with *any* animal in this setting, in our world, is the subterfuge factor. There are people who wouldn't want them around, more than the innocent anonymous folk of Valdemar. And there are more laws that the Heralds would, at one time or another, need to circumvent. The little ones would be easy to hurt/capture/kill, and the big ones would be easy to see. In our world you would really need something like that spirit. Preferably secret. But a glove *is* stretching it. That would make another series. As to the nature of modern Companions... the most likely animal seems to be a dog or a cat--Valdemar's Companions can hardly get around many buildings, so being accepted everywhere doesn't seem necessary. A city would cause a certain amount of difficulties in the form of animal control, though... I'd assume that, as far as dogs go, a small or medium-sized, athletic breed would be best. The ornamental types like miniature poodles, pugs, and chihuahuas would be next thing to useless. Personally, I adore labradors. A possible alternative might be birds... which would be less noticeable alone, but more noticeable in the company of their human. Also, do other >people in Misty's life show up in her literature? Just an idle question, love >ya list-sibs! As an ex Piers Anthony fan.. He started off as an excellent writer. His stories were imaginative, unique and enjoyable reads. But as he got more successful and acknowledged, his writing starting sliding downhill. Everything was about sex. *EVERYTHING*. The more twisted and bizarre the sex, the better. His obsessions with puns and Xanth.. His puns weren't even funny by the end of "Centaur Aisle," just tired and lame .. and the entire panty obsession..? His massive ego and narcism doesn't match what talent he once had by a long shot. I don't know what bet Misty lost to be stuck writing with Anthony, but I don't know if she would be so petty to make pot shots at him in a book he'll probably never read.. For an Anthony book, "If I pay thee not in Gold.." was fantastic. For a Misty book.. -Lorna ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 3 Jan 2001 03:32:25 -0800 (PST) From: Laurina Phouka-lady To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Question and Beyond the World's End spoiler? The question is, what the heck is the spelling of the name of the song. It's Shee-something, Shee-more? A recounting of a battle between the unseelie and the seelie, with a really high body count. Can anyone find out for me? This has been driving me crazy for a good solid week. And next..... S P O I L E R Space. Hopefully that is enough. First, yes, it's true, it's out. *cheer* I bought it too, and devored it in a day. On the other hand, while I liked it, I also think I was disappointed. The first chapters were really good and I really enjoyed them, but the end... I guess it just showed up too soon. And darn it, I'm still waiting for that flash Eric had of Ria in Summoned to show up. I thought that would have been a great way to re-intro the two characters again. ;) Anyway, this is the latest incarnation of Morgana, Lady of things unseen, signing off. ===== It is said that when the moon is full, a horse-phouka will tempt unwary travellers to ride upon it's back.
