They are a proud breed with strong delicate features and I'm sure any former herald would be proud to come back as an arabian or some similar breed. At the same time any herald would ride his or her companion with pride. The only stuff that didn't were his books for kids ("Race Against Time"). Xanth may have been what made him famous, but he had published quite a bit before Xanth was really established and certainly before it took over his writing. I was glad to see that he was starting to do some other stuff recently, such as Tatham Mound (which is a must-read for anyone who is interested in Native American themes in fantasy literature). If Tatham Mound is the book you were thinking of, I would suggest reading Popol Vuh before condemning Anthony out-of-hand for the sexual content. The rather dark and twisted sexuality in Tatham Mound is actually a somewhat tamer version of things in Popol Vuh (which was one of Anthony's sources for the novel). > and the entire panty obsession..? I always assumed that this was a way of approximating the sexual tension that infused his earlier (and excellent) writing while maintaining a suitably "innocent" tone. After all, except for the original Xanth novel, most of the books in the series were rather heavily slanted toward a younger audience. It must be difficult for an author who is used to writing about mature themes directly and well to have to eliminate those themes or bowdlerize them. My main objection to Anthony is that he is, like so many of the writers of his generation, a product of his time and quite sexist. It's not his treatment of sex "per se" that bothers me, but rather his treatment of female characters. In this, he is like Robert Heinlein, Sharon Green, and a number of other writers of that era. totally aside, does anyone know if the Sharon Green who is writing the "Blending" novels (highly recommended, btw) is the same Sharon Green who wrote the Terrillian novels? The styles are extremely similar in ways, but vastly different in others. The Terrillian novels are profoundly sexist, while the Blending novels are not even close. BTW, if sex in your novels bothers you, don't even try to read either of these series. =) > I don't know if she would be so petty to make pot shots at him in a > book he'll probably never read. Why not? She is only human, and she does have a temper, by all reports. A recounting of a battle between the unseelie and the seelie, with a really high body count. Can anyone find out for me? This has been driving me crazy for a good solid week. I believe the name is "Sheebeg, Sheemor" (sp?). I also think it was mentioned in another book (perhaps a SERRAted Edge novel?) as "Sidhe-beg, Sidhe-mor" (again, sp? I don't have the books with me right now!) Also, on the question of what kind of horse in our world most closely resembles the Companions, I would have to say Arabians. The Companions are always mentioned as being very graceful, with high flowing tails and manes, and arched necks. Very streamlined. Plus, they would have to be of a breed that would accomodate the differing sizes of the Heralds (Talia vs. Dirk). Could you imagine people like Talia having to clamber up on something a lot bigger?!? I always thought them to be a bread unto themselves with characteristics of many different types. From the racing stock their grace, basic shape, stamina and speed, from the larger draft horse breeds their sheer size (she did mention them being pretty damn tall), from the pony breeds their amazing ability to clear almost anything in a jump and their heartiness.
