Aso, keep in mind the history of written Gaelic is done by a mixture of non-Celts / Picts and pissed off Celts / Picts who didn't see why they had to have a written language. (Have to admire a paperless society! ^_^ ) .. What that means is basically, a lot of the spelling practices don't make a whole lot of sense, people are forever "correcting" them to give some consistancy and so on and so forth. It's all similar to the problems of Chinese being anglosized.. every generation of linguistical scholars, there's a new way to do it. Yes, there's a fairly good standard now. Yes, most people spell things the same way, but in the 18th century? No. So, all those various versions of Si Beag, a Si Mor are quite probably accurate as many different musicians would have called it many different things. >Ouch. Not quite right. A very good Irish folk group from either the >states or Canada called the Irish Rovers perform a wonderful rendition of >it with a great set of lyrics. uhm.. ^_^;; The Irish Rovers are *Irish* .. They resettled in Vancouver, Canada and started opening their chain of bars called "The Unicorn" across the world, but they are *very* Irish. (And for those of you who would like to know -- Great bars.. Highland bands playing some nights, Irish Rovers on occassion.. Wonderful food and alcohol. Too bad the Irish Rovers split up and sold off all the bars. :( .. ) -Lorna ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 5 Jan 2001 17:37:42 EST From: Timedancer0624-+AT+-gateway.net To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Grove born Message-ID: In a message dated 1/5/01 4:26:40 AM Central Standard Time, dprono-+AT+-planet.eon.net writes: << Maybe Grove-born aren't just around for 'special' Heralds ... maybe they also spring up to prevent the genetic line from producing problems ... or to keep them from becoming so similar, they won't all be wiped out by a plague. >> Okay maybe I read something that wasn't there. I agree completely. Piers needs a good hard smack. My friends and I recently discovered his books i our school library and I was appaled by the fact that they are jst siting out on the shelf, waiting for some small child to come along, think the cover was funny, and decide to sit down and see if they liked it... Believe me, that's how I got hooked on Misty back in grade 5. His puns are funny to a point but they get old... quick. That's one thing I can't stand, a stratigicly placed pun is good but to base your books on puns and panties well... it lacks appeal. On the topic of Misty: Does anyone know if she's planning to do another anthology? I bought Flights of Fantasy after borrowing my friend's copy and Swords of Ice was realy good too. Well to get onto Misty, I have a question that I have been debating for a long time. If Vanyel's companion(Y'Faindes) could talk to Stefen when Vanyel was in trouble, why can't Rolan speak to Talia? Both Stefen and Talia have no mind-speech. But Talia has Empathy which is sort of a mind gift. All Stefen had was the Bardic Gift. Well, any input on this is cool. All Stefen had was the Bardic Gift. >> Well, later on 'Fandes tells Stefan that "Companions can Mindspeak anyone they choose." But, yes, I've also wondered about that myself. Also, Dirk's Gift is Fetching, but he and Ahrodie can Mindspeak, and Skif's Gift isn't Mindspeech, but he and Cymry can Mindspeak. Talia's Gift is closer to Mindspeech than any of theirs, but she and Rolan can't Speak to each other. Personally, I just think that maybe Misty didn't thoroughly think it through before she wrote it all. There ARE discrepancies in her works that don't seem to be able to be "explained" away, but HEY! for such a body of work as she's produced, that's to be expected, especially at the beginning, when I don't think she (or anyone) could have foreseen how tremendously popular her work would be, and thus anticipated the need to think through every possible detail for future novels. Thus > gene pools would be moot. No no, you read right. :) What I got from the books was that it was the spirit that was the reincarnated Herald and the body was very much from the earth -- otherwise, why would there be all those pregnant Companions running around? And as no Companion, being a former human, would mate with a true horse, there's only a limited number of possible mates. Thus, the small gene pool. Companions don't get pregnant from the air -- in Arrows Flight (?) Talia has to leave when Cymry and Rolan go at it, and Skif gets warned about the Monarch's Own's high fertility rate, and the genes have to come from ~somewhere~.... The Grove-Born, being spirits made flesh the way you said, would most likely have a different set of genes from the rest of the Companions, as they are 'parentless' ... basically, they have Companion genes but they're not inherited from any of the Companions already there. This might account for the high fertility rate too ... they're spreading dem genes around! ;P Raven Darkblade commented on high-strung horses and also wrote: > And Jody Lee's Companions look just like Arabians, dished face and all. > ;) Unfortunatly! :P LOL ... sorry, I love their large eyes and the way they move, but the dishy faces just do not appeal! As for high-strung horses ... yes, they can be more interesting, but I see Companions as intelligent without being neurotic. *sighs* They're the ideal ... we could dither all day about horses and *never* find the perfect breed, because there isn't one! But Talia has Empathy which is sort of a mind gift. All Stefen had was the Bardic Gift. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Okies, on this one, I'd have to say that maybe Stefen was maybe a "tad" more receptive than Talia was. Rolan did mindspeak with Dirk at one point, and I'm sure he had in the past with others. IIRC, Talia has no MindSpeech capabilities (if I'm wrong, PLEASE correct me, and let me know where it's at!), or if she does, she's never demonstrated them. The only time Rolan MindSpoke her was during the Choosing. I think that that overrode the normal restrictions due to the fact that it was such a momentous event, and maybe spoken on the soul-level. Stefen may have just been a bit receptive to receiving MindSpeech, but didn't have enough of a Gift to train. Also, on the subject of "Sidhe beg, Sidhe mor"... I don't think there may be a correct spelling anymore, do you? Once it's been translated at all, it tends to open itself up to changes to the spellings or words. The main question had been "What was the title noted in Misty's books?". The answers given were the ones that had been found in Misty's books... So we're going with the spelling that SHE gave them...
