After all, Irish Gaelic does have a standard orthography now (although whoever pointed out that it was not standardized until quite recently was of course very correct). I'm sure that there are many Irish Gaelic speakers who mis-spell their words, just as there are many English spellers who mis-spell their words (for example, regardless of what advertisers may think, "lite" is not the standard spelling of "light" in English). But the fact that people make mistakes does not mean that the standard spelling does not exist. It often means that there is a difference between the spoken and written language, usually due to changes in pronunciation that have not been reflected in the spelling (again, an example from English: the "gh" in "light" was once pronunced, but is no longer). > Once it's been translated at all, it tends to open itself up to > changes to the spellings or words. Normally, translation has no effect on the spelling of a word in the original language. "Borrowing," where a word from one language enters another language and becomes part of the commonly used vocabulary (such as "facade" or "algebra" in English), can be and is accompanied by orthographical changes (how extreme the changes may be depends on the language doing the borrowing). So, if "sheebog sheemore" was a borrowed term into English, we might expect that there would be a standard English spelling that was not necessarily similar to the Irish spelling (although, English is notorious for borrowing spelling conventions along with words-- that's why our spelling is so complicated). However, I think that it's safe to say that this phrase has not been borrowed into English. =) Otherwise, we wouldn't be wondering about it. =) > So we're going with the spelling that SHE gave them... Wrong or not, > that's really not for us to decide... Pish and tosh. =) That's the fun thing about spelling. Orthography means "correct writing." By definition, it is concerned with the right and wrong ways to write words (i.e. spelling rules). From a linguistic point of view, it's one of the few aspects of language where we can really say that something is "wrong" with any justification (as opposed to grammar and pronunciation which can be "non-standard" but are not "wrong" from a linguistic point of view). =) May the seas be your solace and the forests a refuge for your spirit, Cennydd Councilor of Mist Kenneth Allen Hyde | No matter how subtle the wizard, a knife Univ. of Delaware | between the shoulder blades will seriously Dept. of Linguistics | cramp his style -- Old Jhereg proverb kenny-+AT+-Udel.Edu | A mind is a terrible toy to waste! -- Me //www.ling.udel.edu/hyde/prof/ ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 6 Jan 2001 13:32:23 -0600 From: "Tiffanie Gray" To: Subject: Re: Wheels of Fire and other SERRAted Ege books Message-ID: <006301c07817$666bdde0$3a851a3f-+AT+-pavilion> Hello Listsibs! tamlin queried: > Excuse me for interrupting. I want to read them all :). As a matter of fact, Joe does appear in another SE novel, Jamie does not as of yet. The order, so far is: Born to Run Wheels of Fire When the Bough Breaks Chrome Circle There is supposedly another in the works: Tempest Fugit, but its been put off now. Also, the Urban Fantasy grouping fits in here: Bedlam Boyz (By Ellen Guon) Knight of Ghosts and Shadows Summoned to Tourney Beyond the World's End They happen between Born to Run and Wheels of Fire, except Beyond the WOrld's End, which happens after Chrome Circle. And The Di Tregarde Books: Children of the Night Burning Water Jinx High Which all take place before Born to Run I wouldn't be surprised to find out that Sacred Ground fit in the same universe, since its set in modern day. And if you wish to torture yourself, Mark Shepard's books are supposed to be set in the same universe, but I beg to differ, it doesn't hold too well with pre-established rules. Was very disappointed there, he should have known better or someone should have edited better. They are: Elven Dude Spirit Ride And something else which slips me, I never read more than Elven Dude. There is also music by the Celtic Rock group, Tempest, that was written for the novels....haven't got to hear that yet. So... all that you ever wanted to know about SERRAted Edge! Nearly every Herald has a bit, though it isn't everyone's specialty, and some, like Skif, have only the tiniest bit. However, Talia has *none*, which seems rare among Heralds. Therefore she and Rolan have a mindlink but cannot speak in words. And oh, yeah... Welcome back, Erin! Therefore she and Rolan have a mindlink but cannot speak in words. I am totally new to the list, but I am enjoying it. And I wanted to add my 2 cents. What about the fact that Rolan 'spoke' to Karl? In Storm Rising (I think) Florian tells Karl that Rolan can make himself heard to anyone he wishes, it just takes a lot of energy to do so. Maybe he felt that the situation was dire enough to warrant extreme measures this time but he normally has to reserve his strength for other things. His speed, extreme reach in mindspeaking to other companions, etc. I agree that nearly every Herald has a touch of Mindspeech, but Talia does not. Maybe Rolan feels that their link makes the extra expenditure of energy to be wasted since they are so closely linked. Anyway, that is my thought on the issue. Love the list!!! ~Jackie ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 7 Jan 2001 22:37:16 +1300 (NZDT) From: =?iso-8859-1?q?Sheridan=20Hoy?= To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Wheels of Fire and other SERRAted Ege books Message-ID: <20010107093716.91835.qmail-+AT+-web11005.mail.yahoo.com> Thanks heaps Dax!. I think a trip to the book store may be in order. I have Knight of Ghosts and Shadows already, and my best friend has lent me When the Bough Breaks and Wheels of Fire - Chrome Circle is the one I want now - I suppose that has Joe in it?. Question again (sorry). I believe there is a new book about Eric Bayon - is that Beyond World's End?. What did everyone think - without spoilers please since I (and I am sure a number of others) have yet to read it :). Also, just to raise discussion - if you could meet either the SERRA elves or the Heralds, who would you pick?. tamlin :) _____________________________________________________________________________ http://au.classifieds.yahoo.com/au/car/ - Yahoo!
