I would love to be able to meet either; however, my first choice would be to meet the elves. Those stories actually take place in a reality closer to our own... I mean, I'm a little bit of a techno-geek, and if meeting the Heralds and Companions requires going to THEIR world, I'd freak out! Jamie hasn't resurfaced yet, but Joe makes a very strong appearance in "Chrome Circle". ===== ---<---<---<----+AT+- Li'nia Stormdancer -+AT+---->--->--->--- Peon to the Powers That Be, Goddess of All Things Possessed, & Caretaker of the Arena of Discussion and Dissention __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Therefore she and >Rolan have a mindlink but cannot speak in words. Agreed: Talia's complete lack of Mindspeech seems somewhat unusual. It also seems as if her Empathy is also unusual, in that it is exceptionally strong, and that Empathy might be diametrically opposed to Mindspeech in some ways. When she was in Gifts class, IIRC, they have problems figuring her Gift out at first, because it seems as if you go about using it very differently than you do Mindspeech: when they finally realize what her Gift is, they make the comment that they had been telling her that in order to use Mindspeech, she needed to completely clear her mind of all outside stimuli, especially emotions, and that it wasn't until they stopped telling her to do that that she could receive and project emotions. So perhaps the very strength of Talia's Empathy prevents her from using Mindspeech in some way. I'm not entirely sure about this: it doesn't seem as if Mindspeech is completely devoid of emotion, given the many instances when a Companion's Mindspeech is described as "amused" or "wry" or some other emotion-laden word. On the other hand, when Ylsa dies, Kyril (who obviously has a very strong Mindspeech gift) says that he only got the words of what she sent, without any of the emotion or sense, and he needed Talia to interpret what she had said. So perhaps Mindspeech is really a combination of projecting words and emotions, and that being too strong in one side of that combination blocks the other. As for what Rolan "said" to Talia when he Chose her, I personally think that what she got from him wasn't words, exactly, but the overwhelming *feeling* of being Chosen (and loved and accepted, and everything else). Actually, iirc, didn't Teren assure all the students in Orientation class
that even if they never heard their Companions Speak to them again, it was

I agree that the strength of Talia's Empathy possibly negates her ability to MindSpeak. There do seem to be emotions sent along with any MindSpeech. However, her Gift is so strong that she can actually "see" images that are attached to extremely strong emotions. They proved this with Ylsa and with the other Herald-trainee (sorry, forgot the name!) who sent images of his childhood that were accompanied by very strong emotions. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ > As for what Rolan "said" to Talia when he Chose her, > I personally think that what she got from him wasn't >words, exactly, but the overwhelming *feeling* > of being Chosen (and loved and accepted, and > everything else). Here, I believe that he did in fact speak to her at the time of the Choosing. IIRC, Teren mentioned it during a class; even if they never MindSpeak with their Companions again, they DO MindSpeak during Choosing. However, she did receive the emotions Rolan sent her at that time as well... that is, IIRC... lol ===== ---<---<---<----+AT+- Li'nia Stormdancer -+AT+---->--->--->--- Peon to the Powers That Be, Goddess of All Things Possessed, & Caretaker of the Arena of Discussion and Dissention __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
