When Kethry and Tarma are discussing the popularity of their growing clan, Tarma says something like, "remember, down on the plains blonds are considered exotic," which would imply that blonds aren't very exotic in wherever they are.(Jkatha?) Blonds seem to be about as common in Valdemar as they are in the US: both Dirk and Selenay are blond, for instance, and it doesn't seem to cause much remark. Daren's hair is described as "somewhere between blond and brown," and when Kerowyn is looking at her two subordinate lieutenants, it's the fact that Geyr comes "from so far south he was *black*" that is unusual, not the fact that Shallan is fair and blond. I remember reading that K.I.T.T. got about three times as much fan mail as David Hasselhof did, which just proves the intelligence of the television viewing populace, imho. K.I.T.T. would "autograph" pictures by running over them. Okay... ObMisty: it's always fascinated me that both "Dirk" and "Kris" are types of daggers, a kris having an attractive, somewhat showy, wavy edge, and a "dirk" being a much more no-nonsense straight blade. (not an interesting, debate-sparking question, just a ha'penny's worth of observation) Layla _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 Jan 2001 19:17:21 -0800 From: Brooke Alexander To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Modern Companions & Stuff... In Valdemar they do need the Companions as weapons, because Heralds tend to attract (or charge into) trouble, and it's needed. They tend to die young anyway; they need the extra help. And can you imagine some secret agent charge-trouble-with-a-grin type here to be able to handle all the odds and criminals and guns without some sort of special backup? I disagree. Cool! I knew the dirk, but not the other. Hey, books and life make sense! :) Wind to thy wings and warm days on the way, Sara Crazy Freshman In the beginning the Universe was created. Just to look for killing skills is to miss an entire range of attributes that are equally important! (and prehaps Dirk still does so, though i doubt it) i seem to remember at least one reference towards this fact, though i can't think of which book i read it in...has to be one of the later ones, where the relationship between Talia and Dirk was being discussed. (at least i think this is the case, been awhile since i've gone back through the books...) of course i could also be mixing characters up... There are definate references towards other heralds that function as assassins when needed, chief being Skif. There's also a short story involving the Queen's assassin, though it's more about him spending time with his companion chasing after a legend of a snow butterfly... What do you reckon the humans in Iftel look like they sound like a real mix. On a fluff note, what phrases have people picked up on from different scifi books? I keep having to stop myself from asking people what that has to do with the "price of peas in Pseudopolis", which is out of a Tamora Pierce book.
