I now use Dearling (from the Tarma and Kethry series) to him instead. I use Heyla and Wind to thy Wings a fair bit as well. I'll often use the invented swear words from fantasy books instead of our own ones since I find they offend less people and still vent frustration perfectly well. Hence I'll use Sketi from Misty's books and also Frag from the Shadow Run universe. When I'm really irritated though I tend to swear in feline. A good hiss can really relieve frustration and stress. I go through phases in which I try to reduce my use of profanity, to greater and lesser degrees of success. Using SF/Fantasy curses works, sort of. "Puckernuts" and "Zug" (from Elfquest) have the right feel in your mouth. So does "Agnira's tits," but it's also cheating, seeing as how it's actually pretty profane in English. "Bright Lady" has been a reasonably successful replacement. I find I need something that I'm already close say naturally, because swearing tends to be only semi-conscious, so the replacement phrase has to be something that comes pretty quickly to mind. I've therefore been looking for a good Velgarth phrase with "Lord" in it. ("Dark Lord," for some reason, just doesn't feel right; "Bright Lady and Dark Lord" is too long.) Any suggestions would be welcome, especially as we get closer to Lent :) Variations on "Goddess," for some reason, don't work at all for me. It feels like I'm replacing blasphemy in my own religion with blasphemy in someone else's, which seems to be even worse. <> >And finally, one of my favorite lines is actually from the Upanishads >(iirc) and occurs in a loose translation in "Lord of Light" by Roger >Zelazny: > >"Guard us from the wolf, and from the she-wolf, and guard us from the >thief, O Night, and so be good for us to pass." > >[Some explanation here. Although I am not, myself, religious in any way, I do treasure >such expressions as a unifying desire that is born of the > human >condition.] That's fascinating, and beautiful. I'm often struck when attending different services by the degree to which the language of prayer is very much the same in many different religions, just with different names prefacing the heart of the prayer. I suppose that prayers of thanksgiving are basically the flip side of the cry for help: "Thank you for protecting me and mine today. (Please do it again tomorrow.)" Although there are times, I think, when a prayer is thanking the universe for more than just protection, I suppose one is, at least in large part, giving thanks for having been brought safely to the point where one *can* take a breath and give thanks. Heyla, I actually got from Ender's Game, by Orson Scott Card. I still say Great good Gods, and I curse in tayledras, although my pronunciation is rather liberal. :O) Just wondering, Who are your fave chars in Misty's books? I guess I should specify the velgarth series, but I won't, because one of my fave chars is Foxtrot X-Ray, that oh-so-luvable kitsune, and Tannim, from the same series. Also, I love Elspeth, and Savil... Sayvil... whatever. Love ya, list-sibs! I'm new here. I've read everything ML that I can get my hands on. One of the biggest phrases I've picked up is "Jesus Clunny Frog" from Di Tregarde. Also Talia's Loverling. It just rolls well. I can't seem to use Fantasy swear words... I tend to swear in different languages. It's funny to watch a Japanese person's face when you blurt out a good loud "SHIMATTA". Speaking of ML and words and such... I'm trying to get together a list of Shin'a'nin proverbs, but my books are eight hours away with my mother. Can anyone help me? Thanks a lot. It's nice to meet you all. :) Jessie __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! A while back I became a Champion of him, and I've even named my truck after him! (Okay, it may sound strange, but it always helps to make it more personal when you're pissed at your vehicle!) As for Velgarth books, I'd have to say... Sherri. There's a website with a bunch of Shin'a'in, Tayledras, Kaled'a'in, and Haighlei proverbs, and some of Warrl's and Skan's sayings. It also has lists of gods/goddesses/religious orders, Shin'a'in clans, Tayledras clans, merc companies, Gifts, the arrow code, countries, and a partial list of characters from some of the books.
