That was my problem, I didn't even notice that box before. OB misty, On the subject on Bond Birds, I remember when you could have Bond birds, I think that mine was a barn owl. I forget his name though. That was kind of neat. One little think I noticed the other day, The Son of the Sun is named Solaris. And the North star is called Polaris(I think, I haven't really researched this) I wonder if there is a connection. Message-ID: well, sweetheart, we all know she grabbed the Tayledras language straight out of romani, so ya never know...it's highly possible and besides, it's been done before. Hell, Tolkien's languangue of Quenya (just KNOW I'm spelling this wrong) has distinctive indo-european roots hailing from the hindu-sanskrit dialects. How this even pertains to Lackey's use of languages is well, i'm getting there! *bites his mun's Companion* :Hey! He didn't do nuffin!: ::yeah...sniffsniff:: Anyways, this pertains to lackey in the sense that she's doing what thousands of other wandering tribes have done throughout history, using a more complex language, blending others with it and creating her own unique tongue from the fragments (okay, that was an awkward sentence, I know). However, I can definitely agree with the loverly Belinda in that there ARE many similarities with the Shin'a'in tongue and the Japanese language. As for why I know anything about all this, well, the boyfriend has a thing for Tayledras and Shin'a'in...I'm a Japanese culture fiend...so it suits :) Anywa, love all you ppl, and see you again soon >From: "Belinda Riess" >Reply-To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk >To: kienderan-+AT+-hotmail.com >Subject: Misty and the Japanese language... >Date: Thu, 25 Jan 2001 23:43:02 GMT > >Hy List-persons (I don't presume to call you 'List-sibs' since I'm new to >this list and you haven't allowed me to do so. She blinks at the light of the composing window in her email thingy and then says:* Yeah, the North Star is called Polaris. It's also called the Pole Star, too, though that's not really important. Hopwever, I don't think that there's any connection between the two because Polaris, the Pole Star, and Solaris, the Son of the Sun, don't seem to jive together. On the topic of bondbirds: I only joined about a couple months ago so I don't really remember that. However, I think it'd be cool. I think mine would be a gyrfalcon. Or maybe a penguin *cracks up at her own stupid joke* Okay, that's all I have to stay, but I think I'll stay out of lurker land.... O.o I could've sworn the other day that Ria Llewellyn was chasing me. My dictionary just says that "-aris" is a suffix commonly attached to scientific terms, and doesn't appear to mean anything specific. Frankly, it appears to be thrown onto words to make them appear more scientific. "Solaris" is also a word in English, sort of: it's the name of the Sun Microsystems operating system. So, linguistically, Polaris and Solaris are somewhat related, in that they are words that seem to have been formed the same way: take Pole (for Pole Star), or Sol (for Sun), add on -aris to make it sound better and there you have Polaris and Solaris. Which means there ought to be a Lunaris somewhere as well. Ooh, no ObMisty, because I have no opinion on bond birds. Other than the rather heretical thought I had in the shower this morning: it must be nice for Talia to know that she's already experienced her "greatest sorrow." I mean, not to denigrate the awfulness of getting raped and tortured, and the death of your future husband's best friend, but still, at least it's over, and nothing else is going to be that bad. At least according to the weather witch. So now she knows, for sre, then she would never be happier then she was when she finally hooked up with Dirk. Also, not to be nit-picky, or anything, but Kris was her best friend too, not just Dirks. that is why it was such a huge sorrow. Well, that is all I ave to say for now. Message-ID: <0f8101c08b32$a9ea3ca0$f240a8c0-+AT+-backtalk.org> I'm sure this has probably been talked to death in the past.. but as the head of the newbie brigade (self-appointed, so feel free to drag me off my high horse! ^_^ ) I'm gonna bring it up again. In the Owl series, Misty didn't really say at all what's going on in the Eastern Empire.. Are they licking their wounds and preparing to attack the alliance? Are they fighting amongst themselves and ignoring the outside world? I dunno, I'd kinda like to see an Eastern Empire book.. ^_^ -Lorna ------------------------------ End of MERCEDES-LACKEY Digest 2511 **********************************
