I loved Fire Rose, still keep rereading it. What was Firebird like? *butts in on the conversation* Out of the two bad Misty books.. I consider Firebird the worse of the two.. It was basically a re-cap of one of her Bards Tale novels .. except with a Russian theme. I found Black Swan all right.. Nothing I'd rave about though. For most other authors it'd be on the good side.. but for Misty I found it.. lacking that usual spark her novels and short stories have. It was like she sat down without inspiration and said "I'll write this because I think I should" .. Just my hack interpretation! -Lorna ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Feb 2001 08:41:27 -0600 From: Julia Gray To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Black Swan / Firebird -- Contains Spoiler'ish stuff. It was like she sat down without inspiration and said "I'll write this because I think I should" .. I didn't find it quite that bad - although I do agree that it did seem like she was trying to stretch her writing style (a good exercise); this book just wasn't the best representation of her adapting a fairy tale. For writing within the constraints of the tale I liked it, for a ML book I liked it (not loved it). If you go by re-reading .. well, I haven't re-read it yet. kinda obmisty: anyone else having TONS o problems getting Beyond World's End from Amazon? I'm at Manchester Uni, and it's nice, even though the department of Linguistics is one if the most disorganise and confusing departments there is apparently (except the English department). >I was at Owens (Manchester Uni) several years back what do >you think of it? Its set in the Victorian era in India and London, it seems to be set in the same world type as The Fire Rose. I read the blip about it that firebirdarts.com has up and it sounds really interesting. The woman, Maya Witherspoon is a doctor and a mage and the seven "dwarves" are the seven animal friends her mother had. She goes into exile in London after her parents are killed by enemies of her mothers, but of course they find her or there wouldn't be much story there lol. That's basically what the firebird site says, and it sounds good to me. I tended to like the way that it was written. A lot of the themes in the book were true to the time which it was based in, and the magical essence of it was cute :). --- Betha'lis asked: > kinda obmisty: anyone else having TONS of problems > getting Beyond World's End from Amazon? I've ordered from Amazon before, and every once in a while they take ~eons~ to get something out to me. Like Meg chimed in, try their customer service to light a small fire under their seat ;). I had thought that I heard once about some list members that would help out in this area, sending off books to people as they had need for them in other countries. This was a long time ago, however maybe it can be done again. Is there anyone interested in volunteering either the ability to send books or the books themselves? For that matter, is there anyone who can't get certain books outside of the United States that might be looking for help? I'll put my token in: should anyone be interested at all, we can either discuss it here on the discussion group (since it's dealing with Misty books ;), or I can receive private e-mails as well. Gondar, your more than invited to e-mail me privately so we can get you that precious third book :). I've just used it to order The Serpent's Shadow and the new Tanya Huff book The Second Summoning that are coming out in March. I think this is a newish service with amazon.co.uk though because i know back in september I looked into getting a book and it wasn't going to be released for at least 6 months. I don't know if the European amazon has a similar thing but it might be worth looking into. Sorry for the double post today, I go away for months then I can't seem to shut up :) Amy Ferret Friend Lady of All Things Missing, Especially Socks __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? First, welcome to all the newbies! I like the fact that we really are a world-wide fan-club! lol And that brings up my little posting here... I'd be willing to help out List-Sibs who can't seem to get the books they want... Hard-covers are a bit more difficult than paperback, but if someone is wanting me to help, just go ahead and email me off-list so we can talk about it.
