I mean, consider modern-day Christianity... there are a distressing number of Christians whose sales pitch is "accept Jesus, or you'll go to hell!" You even had different factions of Christianity killing one another off at times. But arguing religion never fails to get messy, at least in my experience. People take it personally. :) Re: The Mage Wars: Without going into much plot detail... The Black Gryphon was great, but after that things sort of fell apart; I found The White Gryphon to be only so-so, and The Silver Gryphon all but unreadable in places. I could have lived with TBG as a stand-alone. TSG annoyed me in particular because the whole point of the story, in the beginning, was supposedly Blade and Tad escaping the shadows of their parents--and then their characters in the book were eclipsed by Skan and Amberdrake <> My dear--that would be telling. ;) More seriously, this is such a major plot point that I don't like the notion of answering it on the list. Though if you read the books in chronological order (Mage Wars and Last Herald-Mage before Mage Winds) it's answered fairly plainly. In fact, I think Misty comes out and tells you rather blatantly in the many parts of Winds that were written from Mornelithe Falconsbane's point of view. Somehow, Ma'ar managed to hide his spirit in his descendants. These people later were known as Mornedelth Falconsbane (sp?) and later Andesha. I think he may have even been the evil sorcerer that Vanyel killed during his time. If you read the "Winds" Trilogy and then the "Storm" Trilogy, I think it will explain the process to you. I'm not sure if they even knew that they were the descendants of Ma'ar and possessed by his evil until Andesha figured it out. Of course, if I'm completely wrong here, someone please jump in and correct me! lol ===== ---<---<---<----+AT+- Li'nia Stormdancer -+AT+---->--->--->--- Peon to the Powers That Be, Goddess of All Things Possessed, & Caretaker of the Arena of Discussion and Dissention __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I'll have to say my opinion is a little biased. You see, the first Misty book I read was Black Gryphon and that's what hooked me. I think the characters in Black Gryphon were what truly drew me in. I liked Amberdrake's depth and, of course, Skandranon was simply marvelous. Not having read the other series first, I had no knowledge that this was sort of a prequel to Mage Storms etc so I approached it as a book in and of itself. I will agree with what someone else said. Silver Gryphon left something to be desired. It was almost like that book was written for no other reason than to fill out a trilogy. White Gryphon, on the other hand, was a very nice book as well. I enjoyed reading about the Heighleigh and their culture and how the remnents of Urtho's people integrated into that society. Shoo-fly flavored sheep to all. Of course, if I'm completely wrong > here, someone please jump in and correct me! lol Actually, it wasn't Ma'ar hiding in his descendants. He was actually hidden in some sort of spirit realm protected by a weave of blood magic (ref Mage Winds "Winds of Fury")). There was some sort of trigger that Ma'ar had devised that, when one of his descendants managed to cast a fire-making spell, his spirit would possess the body of that descendant. I can't remember exactly what he was, which tells me I need to break out those books and read them again. ------------------------------ End of MERCEDES-LACKEY Digest 2532 **********************************
