Message-ID: Heyla all, Just thought I'd stick my head out here and comment on the current discussion... I really liked Black Gryphon, and White Gryphon, though Silver Gryphon didn't really do it for me. As a series, the Mage Wars were not my favorite, but they definitely weren't bad. About the Ma'ar thing...he found a way to hide his spirit in the energy patterns of another plane, then, when one of his decendants tried to use their powers to call a fire, he would take over their body. Mornelithe IS Falconsbane. His full name is Mornelithe Falconsbane, they just usually refer to him as Falconsbane. I once made a list of all the incarnations of Ma'ar that were mentioned, but that list is (alas) on the other side of the country, in a box in storage, so it's not very accessable. Anyway, now that I have said my piece, it's back to studying for midterms. I hope I don't offend any of you, but may I just say that I don't think Russia could have made it's politics after 1917 any more confusing. Seriously, they must have sat down and said...now let's see...what's the most complicated, ineffectual, confusing and round-about way we can run the country...and for added color, let's have a new overthrow every two weeks, just to keep things exciting. *sigh*...I have another 45 minutes to master "Russia Since 1917", and then it's off to the midterm...okay, enough fluff... healing sheep to Starshadow, who just had her wisdom teeth out, ~Lightsong Royal Defender of the Brat Dame of OoAM She'enedra to Starshadow ~ ~ Do not live merely in harmony, and some say, but in melody. ~ ~ _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 6 Mar 2001 15:05:52 -0500 From: "Chris Beatty" To: Subject: Re: Who is Mornelithe? A little snigger is heard from the shadows behind her, and Li'nia chooses to ignore her feline companions, Styx* Like I'd said in my last post, it was all from memory... Considering that I'd been up for 30+ hours, I'm amazed I remembered as much as I did! lol That was indeed the way Ma'ar was able to find a 'home' in his descendants... If they didn't use the spell, then he didn't come out of 'hiding'. However, IIRC, most of his descendants tended to be talented mages, so they would have definetely used the fire-starting spell... The_Black_Gryphon is quite good, except that the second chapter plunges into Amberdrake too quickly - we're not properly introduced to the character before we're in the depths of his fear and vulnerability, which unfortunately has the opposite effect of distancing us from him. The opening chapter with Skandranon is handled much better. Other than that, it's one of the better books of the series. The_White_Gryphon is middling. I like it because I really like Skan and Amberdrake. I'm not quite sure I like the portrayal of the Haighlei (sp?): it seems as if it's 'exoticising the other,' at least in part. Correct me if I'm wrong. Thank you to everyone, especially Cennydd, who spoke on the not-praying-in-war issue. It was much help in clarification. By the way, hullo everyone again. Message-ID: <20010307070904.6895.cpmta-+AT+-c005.sfo.cp.net> Me being a new member and all i hate to point this out, but Ma'ar's descendants weren't talented mages, they all had the mage gift in potential, he set the trigger so that when one of his descendants tried to call fire it would alert him and allow him to take over the body, The fire spell was used because it's generally the first spell that a mage talented person tries to cast, espcially if they are in danger, scared. eg The body that ma'ar was usin in the mage storms trilogy eg fury/change/fate or whatever he took over when the original owner of the body ran away from home was scared and tried to call fire to warm himself. It mentions somewhere that ma'ar might have set his trigger to the fire spell because it was the first spell someone might cast, hence someone who would be easy to defeat, unlike an accomplished mage who would have shields up and be able to fight back.
