Actually, the proposal that is being responded to here was not that the MOC did not have as deep a bond as other Companions. Rather, I proposed that the MOC has a qualitatively different kind of bond. If our speculations about the nature of Grove-born Companions is correct, it is very likely that Rolan has no human soul. He may be a completely metaphysical being whose reaction to the loss of a loved one is entirely different from our human reactions. For one thing, if Rolan is truly an ageless other-world spirit, he may not feel the same sense of "attachment" as the human spirits of other Companions. While he might love and support his Chosen (perhaps even more deeply than the mortal-souled Companions), he might equally be immune to the grief that pulls a Companion into death after their Chosen. Of course, it is entirely in Misty's hands to resolve. =) We'll probably never know for sure, unless she actually does write a story where Talia dies...or one set long after Talia's death but still featuring Rolan. And, just to keep this from being a one-liner, I have to ask this (and pray no sheep are thrown at me): Does anyone else ever get the impression we put a lot more thought into "how things work" than Misty does? I mean, I still love the books, but sometimes it seems like we know her world better than she does! Or, is it just me? On the Rolan and Talia front I feel that Rolan may live after Talia, but one thing that i don't understand is that in AoQ when they are asking Talia if she wants the job, they mention that the job of the Monarch's Own Herald was the most dangerous of all the heraldic positions. If this is the case doesn't it seem likely that the Companion would be less likely to survive. I mean if more dangerous stuff happens to the MO then it would make sense that the MOC would face a lot of danger as well. Just a thought. >From: "Patti Paonessa" I have what may be considered a very lame question. >What does "MOC" stand >for? > MOC stands for Monarchs Own Companion. On the favorite short story front, I really liked the Skitty stories. I thought that they were cute and well written, and I couldn't help but fall for Skitty. Of course, i am a cat person, so that may have had something to do with it ;-) WTTW Starshadow* She'enedra to Lightsong Royal Defender of the Brat _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 Mar 2001 23:14:55 -0800 (PST) From: "Li'nia Stormdancer" To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Eclipses and short stories Message-ID: <20010324071455.5255.qmail-+AT+-web1202.mail.yahoo.com> Heyla List-Sibs! > Layla Voll wrote: > > But – an eclipse?? Such is the way of authors. They do the initial creativity (the hard part) and let time and others complete the details and find questions and answers never intended. While I am no great writer, I had a poem published anonymously a few years back in a local press. Much later, to my surprise, a teacher of mine read it in class and the class discussed interpretations. I was shocked at the deep and meaningful images and messages they found. I thought it was just about a ride on a bus. Still, ultimately all the answers run back to Misty. I suppose that is one reason why she disapproves of fan stories. Cheers! Are you perhaps confusing two different characters? The queen during Talia's time was named Selenay. Sherrill was Talia's friend and fellow herald. She was the les/bi one who ended up with Keren after Ylsa died. Sherrill did, indeed, have black hair. I can't remember what color Selenay was supposed to have had, although I always pictured her with very pale wheat-colored hair. Just like the Sun and Shadow ideas all us listsibs throw around, or write about, say, Trevon and Jisa's rule. . ./etc. . . .i'm sure we could all go on and on, but the point is, i don't get why she's so "stuck up" about her fans writing about ehr fanfic. . .didn't she let some of her fans do so and she published them?
