Am I nuts? Or did I see this? (You can answer yes to both questions ) RE:Companions and choosing - I just finished re-reading the Owl series and Karles says about Shandi that "she's the other half of my soul" which sounds pretty serious, if you ask me. But he's also saying that he can't do everything and be everything for her in that statement. So perhaps it is a life bond level, which means "no choice" in the choosing for the Companion. Now, in Roland and Taver's cases....hmmm.... We already know from Quenten's musings that Grove born are a "higher level" spirit than regular companions. We also know that Rolan ranks Gwena (right?? again with the imagination), so that means he's at least as "high" as Gwena, if not more. So here's a theory - life bonds are really types of "soul" bonds - and Grove borns, never having been "human" first, may not have "souls" as we know it?? Meaning the bonds are different - not necessarily weaker, but different - since we're talking a bond between a human and a "all divine" avatar. In that case, it would seem to me that the "never been human before" partner has different "reactions" to the break in the bond. Its not a loss of "soul partner" but something else. Now, is it weaker? I would think not, given the evidence of Talia's bond with Rolan. Is it as crippling to loose the Herald? Apparently not, as evidenced by the fact that Rolan is still alive and kicking after all this time. So the question is - is it because of the nature of the bond or the nature of the beings involved - or both?? Another interesting question - since Gwena is grove born, does that mean she will die with Elsepth? Or is that one of the big reasons they covered up the fact that she's grove born?? susan, going back to lurking ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 Mar 2001 18:50:46 -0800 (PST) From: "Li'nia Stormdancer" To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Looked-forward to.... Which was why I was so thrilled when the "Storm" books came out. It gave us a whole new main character, with new supporting characters thrown in. But, it also brought back some of our fave main/supporting chars from the other series. We really hadn't seen anything on the lifes of the Blues before. And there really hadn't been any Heralds with non-Herald children before, either. It gave us our first real look at the Empire and snippets from the lives of some very interesting characters. The settings were familiar enough to help orientate us to the story, but also gave us new places to see our familiar faces in (i.e. Urtho's Tower, the border of Iftel). It also helped fill in some of the gaps of life in Karse, and the religion there. So, even though some List-Sibs have mentioned that Misty may be getting stale with her Velgarth novels, she still has quite a bit left to share with us. I personally enjoyed those "Storm" books much better the the books on Van. I don't know if I'd mentioned earlier that I would also like to see the lives of the trainees in the other branches of the Collegium. I'd like to see all of them represented (Healers, Heralds, Bards, and the Blues). While I may have been biased against the Blues before (from the "Arrow" books), I began to see them in a new light in the "Storm" books. We had seen something with the Bardic trainees in the "Magic" books, and of course a little about the Healers and a lot about the Heralds in the "Arrow" books... Of course, I'm just being greedy, though! I personally have no idea how long it takes to crank out a novel, and I know it only takes me a few hours to devour a new book... I know Misty has projects lined up, and here we are making up a rather large wish-list for her... lol ===== ---<---<---<----+AT+- Li'nia Stormdancer -+AT+---->--->--->--- Peon to the Powers That Be, Goddess of All Things Possessed, & Caretaker of the Arena of Discussion and Dissention __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? You may RP face-to-face in someone's living room (as you would in a D&D game) or you may LARP (Live Action Role Play), but absolutely no RPGing via e-mail, chatrooms, websites, MUSHes, MOOs, MUCKs or anything else is permitted. Misty's agent and lawyers see these activities as an infringement on the gaming rights to her stories. Such rights routinely go for several thousand dollars for a five-year development period, so unless you are willing to cough up the cash to pay for the rights, stick to writing fan fiction (and send those signed releases to Highflight for the permission to do so!). RPGing is understood to mean any form of dramatization (dialog, narrative about a character's actions, anything that is in story or dramatic format). You may do nonfiction writing about your persona (e.g., "I have a persona with brown hair and brown eyes who is a Herald-Mage in Queen's Own."). But you may not e-mail, post on websites, type in chatrooms or otherwise electronically distribute writing in which you talk as your persona, Companion or anything else. Any use of Misty's settings in an electronic medium is also forbidden. Such writing is considered to be fan fiction and may only be published in approved fanzines and newsletters that have a limited circulation in hardcopy form only." I'm still tracking the "Valdemar where Kris didn't die reference", which I think referred to fanfic. ----- Original Message ----- From: Hill, Susan To: Sent: Monday, March 26, 2001 6:22 PM Subject: the fan fic topic that won't die > Hey - > I know Misty said "no fan fic" but somewhere, somehow, I remember someone > saying she'd given permission for some sort of RPG set in the "Valdemar > where Kris didn't die" to keep the "universe" separate from hers. > > Am I nuts? I think that, as they said above, they are a bit darker than Misty's, but great all the same. The last book in the Farseer trilogy is "Assasin's quest". The next trilogy, the Liveship Traders are about boats that become "alive" once three generations of a family have died on board and added their experiences to the ship. The books are centered around a Trader family, and are also magnificently written because they interweave so any different plots thayt you can't wait till they all get resolved, or someone meets so-and-so, etc. The "bad guys" are well written in both series, making you symapthize with their motives all the while despising them.
