Okay, just so that everyone who is dying to know the true story of the sheep 
and can't seem to get a hold a a website that can tell I will tell the basic 
idea.(I know there is tons of improper grammer in there).

The sheep has to do with someone who was on the list a while ago(to be 
honest I don't remember her name or if she is still on list) who was 
obsessed with sheep. Almost every post she made had a reference of some kind 
to them. People started making fun by making their own references to sheep 
and thus we have our numerous kinds of sheep.

I hope that is enough for you all. I sadly don't know the address to newbie 
fest either, but I thought that i could at least be of some help.

Okay, every one is talking about how  the herald companion bond is like a 
life bond, in that it is Soul to soul.  Well I recall Lavan and his 
Companion(Sorry don't rememer the name and my copy of that is out of my 
hands at the moment) being lifebonded. How does this make there bond 
diffent? other then the obvious "Lavan won't fall in love" Reason I mean.

I,too, know better--but, just for all you newbies out there, I tried the addy 
given, and the web site is NOT responding--but that's most likely temporary.  
The advice to search via Yahoo was great--it pulled up Kenneth's 
page/addy--http://www.ling.udel.edu/hyde/pers/misty/newbiefest.html --and 
also the link to the MLM mailing list:  
http://ftp.herald.co.uk/pub/lists/lackey-archives/.
So, between the two, you all should have no problem reading about the rules 
and regs.  I have no ObMisty, as I haven't any questions/observations at this 
time.

Note to those that toss buckets of liquids at newbies:  remember that the 
mops are stored in that corner closet in the Halls of Mist--please clean up 
after yourselves!

This particular software cannot, no. However, steps are afoot to change
the software on which the list runs, to something which will offer this
as one of the possibilities; I may not actually set that, but having the
possibilities would be nice.

yes, misty had a home page at highflight up for a while, and that is where you found the pictures.  it is not up at present... they are working on a new homepage, but it is not up yet.

However, the www.ling server is offline until the 30th, for hardware
upgrades to the network.  So, any newbies (Ciara!) can email me and I will
send them a copy of the page for their own personal delectation.

Please, if you have not read the Newbiefest, do so.  There are a lot of
new members on the list and I've noticed a lot of netiquette rudeness
(one-liners, large numbers of small posts in a short time period, no
snipping, etc).  I'm sure that this rudeness is not meant as such, and is
due to inexperience or ignorance, but it still is rude.

Oops.  Yes, that's the correct URL.  I forgot that I had named the
directory misty on the website (it's named lackey on my personal
computer).  Of course, it's still down.  But it will be back online at the
end of the week (Monday at the latest).

Since it has become such a topic of discussion, and since the newbiefest
is offline at the moment, here's the skinny on the sheep thing.  This is
taken directly from the Newbiefest and was written by Lady Ele (Eleonora
Scoseria):

...an all-time best-seller among newbies. The sheep thingy. You will
notice people offering each other sheep (chocolate covered, something or
other flavored, etc), and also saying things like "sheeps behind someone
or other" Well, the sheep thingy has 2 parts and both are humorous and in
some aspects a bit bawdy. I will transcribe what was explained to me by
Nightshade, who in turn got it from Mel...... Sheep Explanation: >The
sheep thing started when Lady 'Reesa started signing off as (among other
things) "Queen of Everything and Close Personal Friend of Many Sheep".
People started making sheep jokes... sheep-and-kilt jokes...
sheep-and-Aussie jokes... etc and so forth. 'Reesa made the most jokes, of
course! Then somebody (don't ask me who, if 'Reesa ever mentioned names I
don't remember them) sent 'Reesa some really nasty private e-mail in which
they said her sheep jokes were disgusting, she was warped, she was a
corrupting influence, stuff like that. (Hey, *I* thought the jokes were
funny! They weren't that bad, she was just making comments about sheep
being warm on a cold night, they don't snore, etc...) Understandably, she
was upset, and complained on-list; everybody said they didn't see anything
wrong with the jokes, and the sheep were here to stay. Then when Lady
Thessaly set up as Goddess of Nomenclature and started naming people as
Gods and Goddesses, of course everybody gave tithes when they asked to be
Named, and a lot of the tithes were sheep. (Chocolate-covered sheep,
sheep-shaped chocolates, sheep-flavoured chocolates - that one made me
look twice! - spun-sugar sheep, and just plain sheep.) Most recently,
somebody got tired of using <g,d,rlh when they said something that was
likely to draw a barrage of homing coconuts or a flame (grin, duck, run
like hell), so they said they were tired of "duck"ing and started
"sheep"ing instead. Now people sheep, hide behind sheep, disguise
themselves as sheepdogs... somebody found a sheep site on the Internet...
it goes on!

So there you have it.  The genesis of the sheep thing is not based on
Misty's work at all.  It was a list thing.

Just out of curiosity: why that event in particular?  Because (no offense to 
Kris) it actually seems like sort of a non-event.  Everything that happens 
after he dies (in Arrows, Winds, Storms, etc.) could also happen if he were 
still alive, especially if, as I understand it, he comes stumbling into camp 
after Dirk has already done his Fetching thing, worked with the Companions 
in a new and unusual way, and admitted his love to Talia.

I mean, if one really wanted to have a *different* universe, why not kill 
Talia at that point instead?  Say, for instance, that she took the poison 
just a few minutes earlier, and the Healers weren't able to save her after 
Dirk pulled her out.  Or, if you wanted someone previously dead to survive, 
why not Thalan, Selanay's first husband: say that he wasn't on the hunting 
trip when his henchpersons attacked, and that his connection with the attack 
was never actually proven.

I'm *definitely* not proposing the creation of entirely new fan fiction 
universe!  I'm just curious how and why Kris's death came to be the turning 
point for the original vs. fanfiction universe, when it seems as if 
everything can go on as in the real universe – unless that was the point, 
that Daren and Kerowyn will still arrive, Elspeth can still find the 
Taleydras, and fanfiction can be written in a history that doesn’t have to 
be radically different from the ML reality, just different enough.

I think that, indeed, Misty chose it because it's a "non-event", and also
because it's a non-event that took place toward the end of the Arrows
trilogy. As I recall, it's one of the things from the Helpful Handout on How
to Become a Herald that she established for people wishing to create
personae, and predates most of her books except the Arrows trilogy, so she
was giving fans a playground where "everything happened...except this one
little thing near the end that isn't really going to affect anything" rather
than making us constantly ponder "could this have happened in the
fanfic-verse?" And, I'd bet that it doesn't even matter to 90% of the
"legit" fanfics out there, since another rule was that Misty's characters
could only make cameo appearances.

OK. . .I'm pretty sure it's because he and Kalria (his companion) are lifeboned, and they also have the normal Healrd-Companion bond. .
Remember in Vanyel's books, how you find out that ppl and thingscan be reborn into different species or companions, I think what happened was that Kalira died before she met Lavan, and was re-born as a companion. . .thi scould also be due to the fact that she is the only one who can keep his powers under control. . .
I dunno if it's right, but it's an answer?
